2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
How independent is DC with feeding and what ustensil does he/she uses?
Are they all using ustensils by now?

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
My girls (22 almost 23 months old and 3 years old) have always been great at self feeding. We skpped baby foods and went straight to table foods so anything they have ever eaten off a spoon/fork they have done themselves starting at 8 months. By a year they could eat things like yogurt with no messes. If its thin(like some soups) they will still make a little bit of a mess. Brooke(22 months) has been using a fork also since around 10 months. Randomly she will still sometimes use her hands but then my 3 year old with tell her "not your hands, your your fork" So I think thats helped train her to use them almost all the time. My girls are such neat eaters, they ask for wipes when they are done and they also put there dishes in the sink and clean up after themselves

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
Mine is a nightmare with self-feeding, but I'm not surprised. She hates to eat, never will admit she's hungry, etc. So if I don't feed her (or load the fork for her to pick up) she won't eat.
Mealtimes are generally still a constant battle in this house
ETA: She also HATES to get messy while eating. So if food gets on her face while eating, we have to wipe it off (JUST like me, BTW...guess she watched me )...and doesn't like to get her fingers dirty so she was never one to eat anything besides cheerios/etc with her fingers.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
Alyssa is 3...she can use a fork and spoon very well...but I find she opts for her fingers for certain foods.
ETA she will even ask me to help her or feed her sometimes...I think its laziness though. I talked to the dr about it and she doesnt seem concerned.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
Noah has self fed for a long time now as well..He can use a fork and Spoon well...and prefers an adult fork and spoon too, not a kid one, but he tends to prefer to use his fingers to eat a LOT, but Since I know he is capable of using a fork and spoon, I let him, I dont really care...

same for Jack - except I've noticed that he used the spoon better than the fork. I have to give him the fork more - it's my fault

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
My ds is almost 17 months old and can use a fork well and feed himself. He's ok with a spoon but tends to get messy while using one. My 3 y/o can use a fork, spoon, and cup well but she is a year older then your son. She was using a fork and a spoon well by 2 though.
ETA: DS still uses his fingers for foods but is 99% self feeding.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS just turned 2 and he is very good with using the fork and the spoon. He feeds himself everything... even insists on eating yogurt by himself. He actually does a really good job with it!
Sometimes he gets frustrated with the fork and uses his fingers, though.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS self feeds with both and will sometimes still use his hands when frustrated.
He's great with the fork.
As far as the spoon goes though it can only be used with thick items (oatmeal, yogurt, etc) ... he wouldn't be able to eat soup or anything that doesn't "stick" to the spoon.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
Ryan is a bit younger but has gone from using the spoon sporadically around 12-13 months to really using a fork and spoon welll by 15-16 months. At this point, I feel better about giving him a whole container of yogurt. He's slower with the spoon, but he does it well. The fork he has mastered - he requests it with every meal (every grilled cheese )

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS likes to use the spoon and fork, but will typically give up and use his hands on pasta halfway through the meal.
He does great with thicker things like yogurt and baby food (Yep, he stopped eating his adult table veggies and now eats them with a spoon out of baby food containers.) He is an absolute mess with soup, but he is getting better with keeping the spoon a bit more steady.
He enjoys 'stabbing' his food with a fork. He will typically eat his chicken nuggets and pasta with the fork. But as I said before, he typically gives upp halfway through and uses his hands.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS can use a fork and spoon but many times decides not to With things like yogurt and pudding he uses the spoon consistently but with hot dogs, meatballs...he uses his hands instead of the fork most times.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS uses a fork and spoon but will also use his fingers. I have to cut things up into really small pieces otherwise he will spit them out and say to big mommy. He does not know how to use the fork to cut the food. He also likes me to feed him or for him to feed me. He eats but sometimes it is a struggle. He cannot open packages. When should he be able to do that?

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS is 21 months, and uses his spoon pretty well, not perfect, but good for his age. The fork frustrates him though--he'll take a few stabs and then use his fingers. I haven't been insisting on it either, but it's such a struggle to get him to eat anything other than fruit, I'm in no mood to battle over the fork most days.
Over the last week he wants me to feed him again, which is odd--he was enjoying feeding himself. Maybe he is regressing a little temporarily or we need to make a big fuss over his spoon weilding abilities again? So we've been doing you feed one, I feed one and go back and forth. That he accepts.

Re: 2+ yo moms - let's talk self feeding
DS just turned 2 and can use a spoon and fork IF he wants to eat of course. Usually he doesnt want to eat so I end up feeding him 90% of the time or else he would starve!
