The legal drinking age in the US should be...
I saw this poll on cnn.com and wanted to know what the LIF community thought.
I vote for 18. IMO, if you're old enough to serve your country, you're old enough to have a beer.

not sure that will ever happen. that's pretty standard for most countries, some even younger than that.

drinking is not really the problem - it is everything else that comes along with it which is so scary and deadly.
i don't think it should be lowered.

I don't have a problem with lowering the drinking age to 18.
But I would also seriously stiffen the DWI laws. They should have a "probationary" period, lowering the legal BAC limit to .04 for anybody under 25.
This way the kids won't even think about drinking and driving with the intent of "well i'll stop drinking to sober up".
At .04 one drink should put you over the limit.

I voted 21 I used to feel this way, however there are sooooo many irresponsible 18 year olds (and 21 and older) but being legally able to drink just adds more opportunity to f** up

the drinking age is lower- and it's so not a big deal there
we make everything such a big deal here- sex, drugs, drinking
it just makes kids want to experiment
I think 18 is a good age- if you can die for this country in war, vote for a president, get married with out your parents consent, go off to college- live on your own- and be expected to pay for it
you should be able to have beer legally

I had to do a paper in college on this topic. The pros and cons.
If you are old enough to be drafted you should be old enough to drink.
Some 25 or so years ago the drinking ages varied by state. Hawaii was 18, Arizona was 19.

I voted for 21.
I agree with a few points made...
I agree with raising the enlistment age...
I also agree that there are too many 18 year olds still in HS.
Did I drink at 18? Absolutely!
In hindsite, was I very responsible? Well, I wasn't as responsible as I'd want my daughter to be one day.
I don't think that raising the age will prevent younger adults from drinking and engaging in dangerous behavior. I think it goes WAY deeper then that.

I completely agree!
They should do what they do here:
1. Lower the drinking age to 18.
2. Getting and keeping your driving license isn't as easy:
There is probabtion, you can't go over a certain speed in the first 2-3 years of having your license, you have to wear special plates on your car that says what stage you are in regarding your license (we call them P platers).
3. They double points and fines on holiday weekends.
4. Random breath testing. They have them on all major roads. Quite often my husband gets stopped on the weekends (he doesn't drink).
5. It is .05 here, not .08.
This stuff works and drunk driving isn't a huge problem here. Raising the age is just going to make the problem worse in my opinion. It makes it more forbidden.
