Think about it if your 18 yr old child was in the military drunk in the middle of a gunfight
this is alittle extreme I don't think soliders are drunk on the battlefield now- nor would they be if the drinking age is 18

Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...
I agree with others who said the europeans got it right.
They teach their children to drink responsibly and not just sweep it under the rug and pretend that their children aren't drinking.
In high school, my friends and I were friends with foreign exchange students from both Italy and France and they all said the same thing, they didn't really drink at home b/c it wasn't as much fun as it is here in the states.
Here there was an element of doing something forbidden, that was exciting. Drinking at home was just "having a drink", there was no excitement to it.
I think there's a lot to be said for parents TEACHING their children the RIGHT way to drink so that it's not abused.

uh, no...they are not!
raising or lowering a drinking age is not going to curb people from drinking when they are not supposed to.
do you know ANYONE who waited until 21 to have their first drink?
making anything taboo heightens the allure. take that away...you may not need to worry about kids sneaking into the woods.
at the same time...the scene with Amy Poeller from Mean Girls scared me a bit...
we need to teach kids to be responsible for their actions...not just give them more freedoms.
and I think like ave10 said...stricter DWI laws, a probationary period. and HARSHER penalties are needed.

I wasnt really into drinking until I was in my early 20's...I never thought it was a big deal but none of my friends really drank either. All we did was play sports every day. The drinking age should be 21 or 25 I cant see it channging to 18.

Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...
when I was 18-20- Half the fun of drinking was TRYING to into the bars
once I could legally get in
it wasn't as much fun anymore- and I was kind of over it
I really didn't go out to bars again until I moved in to NYC- and no one had a car and it didn't matter how drunk we got
now- I just drink wine at home on the weekends
I drank plenty in high school - and even Junior High- I don't the drinking age had any effect on that
and I played 2 sports a year
as did most of my friends

Im pretty sure the reason why the age of enlistment is 18 and not 21 is based primarily on the fact that the younger one gets into the military the more time the govt has to train them into being a great soldier and you should be in pretty good shape at 18.

18 is the year of emancipation. it has many social meanings in this country.
the fact is, the military mandated it to be 18 b/c KIDS where trying to enlist and serve during the wars prior to Vietnam. it's a MINIMUM age requirement. to stop YOUNGER people from trying to do it.

I say do away with the drinking age altogether and focus like some others said on education about alcohol and stricter DWI/DUI enforcement.

It's been proven that the younger someone starts drinking the higher the likelihood is that they will become addicted to alcohol.
Is this really true Kevin? I mean, when I was 13, my dad let me have a little glass of beer with him at dinner. Once I got to High School age, I had absolutely no desire to go drink in the woods with my friends. I was like, "What's the big deal about drinking?"
Well, I was allowed a glass of wine now and then in my young teens for special occasions, so it was hardly taboo in my home. But guess who was chugging in the woods a few years later? And travelling to NYC at 17--the age here was 19 at the time whild NJ was 21--it was easier to get served.
So I don't think exposure is always the answer, though it would be good to at least talk about it. I don't recall my parents having talks with us about responsible drinking.

I can't help but think that maybe this would work for more people.
Also, what about in Europe where kids drink wine? Do France and Italy have higher numbers of alcoholics? I haven't done the research so I don't know. But my first impression would be that there would be much less abuse of alcohol if we didn't make it so taboo to kids for so long that it leads to them drinking irresponsibly.
Yes it is true and yes there is a higher rate of alcoholism in Europe. Maybe do a little research and you wouldn't feel the need to challenge everything I say. You really have a hard on for me don't you, David?
Alcoholism rates per capita by country has little to do with the legal drinking age in those countries. Alcoholism is a disease - it is not based on laws dictating when one can drink. Laws can possible have some effect on when the disease begins to manifest itself, but it doesn't change who is and is not prone to alochol addiction. I think it's also safe to say that most people drink for the first time before they turn the legal age -- and that generally has little to do with whether or not that person is an alcoholic.
My questions relating to the legal drinking age has nothing to do with alocholism rates, but more to do with alcohol-related accidents and deaths and their relationship (if any) to raising / lowering / maintaining the legal drinking age.

I'd like to see the age of legal drinking stay at 21, but, if they do bring it to 18, make is a national law for people to get their driver's license at 18. In some states, having kids driving cars at 15 or 16 years old, wouldn't help if the age for drinking went down to 18.

I don't see the connection with getting a license at 16 when the drinking age is 18. Whether the drinking age is 18 or 21, 16 is still underage.

True, still underage, but the way I'm thinking, kids will think they are just that much closer to the legal age of drinking-so it 'could' have the effect of more kids doing it. Or not, I don't know. I just think that kids will be younger and younger trying to drink, and possibly causing more fatal crashes.
Just throwing it out there.

Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...
Not sure what I think the legal age is. I feel like 18 is too young, since I've heard from people who were around when it was 18 that they were drinking pretty hard early in high school.
Don't agree with raising the enlistment age, my dad was kicked out of college at 19 for partying too much and went into the Air Force. It really straightened him out. He is the first to admit he probably wouldn't have been alive at 21 if it wasn't for the military giving him a swift kick in the arse.

I pretty much did. I had one drink in high school. Went out one night in college before I was 21 and had 1 drink. Then on my 21st birthday I had a drink with dinner. I still rarely drink, didn't drink at all at my wedding, the toast was with sparkling cider.
But I come from a very long line of alcoholics and am pretty messed up in the head about alcohol. My grandfather died of cirrhosis when I was about 8 and that totally freaked me out about what alcohol can do to you.

Okay, these statements are just plain ignorant. Nobody in the military drinks while in the field. It's like any other job -- they dont operate guns while drinking. They drink in their recreational time (weekends and after work) and when they're deployed they're not allowed to drink at all.
And why does the drinking age have anything to do with serving? Because these men and women are out there at the age of 18 (which is ADULTHOOD) risking their lives protecting and serving the same country that is prohibiting them from sitting back and having a beer. I'm sorry...for those of you who seem to think that at 18 people arent mature or responsible enough to make the decision to enlist, you should probably take a second and realize that many of our grandparents were mature enough to make the decision to marry and have children at 18. Not to mention, many of those same 18 year olds who enlist are more responsible than a lot of 25 year olds. For God's sake, if you can put your life on the line for the rest of America (preserving their rights) you should d a m n well be able to have a few drinks.
At 18 you are considered an adult in every other aspect -- voting, marriage, buying a house, and serving your country, paying taxes. But the government is going to say "hey...you're an adult, except when it comes to having a glass of wine. You're not mature enough for that yet" That's completely unfair.

I vote for 18. IMO, if you're old enough to serve your country, you're old enough to have a beer.
But are most 18 year olds just going to "have a beer"? I voted for 21. most 18 yr olds have a beer regardless of the law. I had my 1st drinking exprience when I was 15 or 16 at a party.
my point is, if you're old enough to carry a gun and fight for your country, why can't you have a drink?
and the answer of raising the enlisting age is a nice thought, but isn't going to happen. so as long as 18 yr olds can join the military, they deserve to be able to drink.

think about Europe
I think 18 is a good age- if you can die for this country in war, vote for a president, get married with out your parents consent, go off to college- live on your own- and be expected to pay for it
While I do not support drinking at any age, I do not understand the logic about considerering 18 legally an adult yet not allowing some things until 21.
In regards to the reference to Europe. The theory is simple. If you are 18, you are responsible legally to do whatever you want. You are legally an adult. So it's up to each individual to act responsibly. It's hard to tell someone you are responsible yet we don't trust you with alcohol.
In France you actually cannot drive above 55 mph on the 1st year of your issued driving license. Regardless of your age. You MUST have a sticker in the back of your car that says "90" (90 kilometer per hour since they don't talk in miles).
There are accidents with drunk drivers but this is not as predominent as here in the US. Drinking is a big deal. I have never met someone tell me...wow you are 21, you can drink now. The emphasis on the "importance" of drinking is very important here in the US. I never grew up with people drinking in college dorms, etc...

Do you actually have info on that? Because I can tell you than kids DO NOT drink wine.
Wine is the "cool, sophisticated" drink people drink here.
NOBODY drinks wine outside a meal. You don't have cheese and wine. That's a US thing.
I think my grandma had some wine mixed with water when she was a kid. I was completely shocked.
AGAIN, kids DO NOT drink wine. Maybe in the country site but not when they are young.
Wine is also an acquired taste that most kid would not like.
The ONLY wine I would see mid to late teenagers drink is Champagne as a celebration. Champagne is really not considered "alcohol" in France.
Beer is muchh more popular as a drink that wine. Beer is a summer drink and most men drink it. Late teenagers also.

Most 18 yr olds do dumb enough things without the help of alcohol.
