Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...

i dont know.

if they changed it to 18 i wouldnt mind.

there are 18 year olds that are more mature than some 25 year olds.

it definatly depends on the individual, but since that is out of the question i say either keep it at 21 or move make it 18.

i think that having a lower drinking age definatly makes it less of a "big deal". european teens/20somethings are so used to drinking at a younger age it isnt so taboo and they handle drinking better.

just some ideas.

I agree, the drinking age here is 18 (and its 16 to go into a pub) and we have a HUGE problem with binge drinking. If your judgement isn't good enough to drink, your judgement to join the military should be at the same level...

Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...

If they're going to change the age for the entire country then I guess 18 would be okay, even though I chose 21 in the poll. Clearly I haven't been paying close attention to the news.

If they're only going to do it by state then it shouldn't be lowered at all. One of the reasons they raised it here in the first place was because kids from Jersey where the drinking age was 21 kept getting themselves killed because they'd come here to drink at 18 and then get killed on the way home because they were drunk. This happened all over the country where the age was lower in one state and higher in a neighboring state.

This may not affect kids on LI as much as it would those in Brooklyn and Staten Island, where going out in Jersey is a short drive.

I saw this poll on cnn.com and wanted to know what the LIF community thought.

I vote for 18. IMO, if you're old enough to serve your country, you're old enough to have a beer.

There is a huge maturity difference between 18 and 21. There is a huge maturity difference between many 18 year olds as well. I am sure there are many 18 year olds that can handle the responsibility, but then there are many that cannot. Just think yourselves of the most immature 17 year old you know. Would you feel safe that this kid would be able to estimate if he or she was too drunk to drive or even buzzed?

For the sake of the 18 year olds that mature at the bottom of the bell-curve, the drinking age cannot be lowered.

I 100% agree with this!!!

While I understand the statement "if your old enough to die for your country you should be old enough to drink" I feel there are way to many 18 year old that would make the wrong decision whether to drive or not. I know there are many irresponsible adults that do the same but I think that drunk driving would increase tremendously.

I voted for 21.

I agree with a few points made...

I agree with raising the enlistment age...

I also agree that there are too many 18 year olds still in HS.

Did I drink at 18? Absolutely!

In hindsite, was I very responsible? Well, I wasn't as responsible as I'd want my daughter to be one day.

I don't think that raising the age will prevent younger adults from drinking and engaging in dangerous behavior. I think it goes WAY deeper then that.

I completely agree. With all of the drunk drivers on the roads these days- why would you want to add more irresponsible drinkers to the list?

I voted 18... you can vote, serve your country, drive, move out (meaning college or on your own), etc... A lot of those things are adult privilages, so I think you should be able to drink.

Ditto this. If you're considered old enough to be in the military, then you should be old enough to drink one with your brigade.

It's been proven that the younger someone starts drinking the higher the likelihood is that they will become addicted to alcohol.

Is this really true Kevin? I mean, when I was 13, my dad let me have a little glass of beer with him at dinner. Once I got to High School age, I had absolutely no desire to go drink in the woods with my friends. I was like, "What's the big deal about drinking?"

I can't help but think that maybe this would work for more people.

Also, what about in Europe where kids drink wine? Do France and Italy have higher numbers of alcoholics? I haven't done the research so I don't know. But my first impression would be that there would be much less abuse of alcohol if we didn't make it so taboo to kids for so long that it leads to them drinking irresponsibly.

I voted to keep the drinking age at 21.
Aside from myself, I maybe knew 1 person in HS that was responsible enough not to get smashed at house parties. No way would I want to be on the road when any of those kids drove themselves home.

I'm not really sure that we can compare kids in the US to those in Europe because IMHO, I believe European kids are slightly more mature as a whole.

I like the Austrian style - their drinking age is 14 - and they state we teach them to drink then to drive

their driving age is 16 - it gives them two years to learn to drink properly

Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...

I voted for 25 because I know that when I was 21 I did some real stupid things, nothing that caused anyone harm but stupid none the less.

The fact that you can serve our country at 18 should have zero to do with how old you should be when you can drink.

Could you imagine a soldier at 18 drunk while he or she is in the field of battle???

Thats insane people......sorry if not 21 than 25 def not 18 under any circumstances.

Think about it if your 18 yr old child was in the military drunk in the middle of a gunfight

I don't have a problem with lowering the drinking age to 18.

But I would also seriously stiffen the DWI laws. They should have a "probationary" period, lowering the legal BAC limit to .04 for anybody under 25.

This way the kids won't even think about drinking and driving with the intent of "well i'll stop drinking to sober up".

At .04 one drink should put you over the limit.

this is what I would agree with.

Re: The legal drinking age in the US should be...

I have thought for a long time that it is so wrong to think 18 year olds are mature enough to make decisions about serving their country, getting married, etc., but they cannot have a drink legally. In my mind, no one should be allowed to enlist in the miliary until they are 21, but that won't happen.

But I'm not sold on the idea that 18 year olds are really old enough to handle alcohol responsibly. I remember when New York had the 18 year old limit, and while I was too young to take part in it myself, it didn't seem as if 18 year olds drank any less than they do now. Drinking also wasn't a big thing back then, I think pot and cocaine were much more popular and pot was cheaper.

So what to do? I really don't know. I do think the age of adulthood should be more uniform, either 18 across the board or 21.

I'm pretty sure those studies relate to kids who start drinking before the age of 15...
