Baby vs older child expenses
I hear so often that things are more expensive when a child gets older.
That being said, what is so expensive? Is it different for those who sah vs those who had full time child care expenses?
I just can't imagine spending 1000-1500 a month on an elementary/middle/high school kid

I have an almost 3 year old, so I can't speak from experience but from what I've heard it is mostly in terms of housing (bigger kids need a bigger house), food (bigger kids eat more food), instead of daycare expenses there are still babysitting expenses, when they are in school the schools ask for a lot of supplies and money towards supplies, trips etc, plus school birthday parties if they get invited by the whole class, full price admissions at events and attractions, they get their clothes dirtier so you probably need a bit bigger wardrobe and at the age kids know about brands might want more expensive clothes, instead of baby gadgets and equipment you still buy the same amount in toys and activities. I mean I can't imagine spending more for her as she gets older but people say that, so I'm guessing things will pop up and I'll understand better when it happens to me.

I'm with you, I'm confused when people say that too. I only have one DS who is 3 and he's been in daycare since he was 12 weeks old, full time. The daycare expense alone makes me think things will be far less expensive once he's in kindergarten. Even if you add up more food for a growing young boy, after school care, after school activities I still don't think it will add up to the cost I pay for daycare right now. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think its all the activities like baseball or soccer and summer camps that adds up and especially if you have more than 1.

summer camps. This year for my 7 year old it is $3800 for baseball, science and the Y camp.
We also pay for after school care at $180 a month.
Sports and all the equipment that goes along with it.
Now my 2nd is doing camp this summer for half days. That's $1800 for the summer. Add in swim lessons for him on top of that.
Adds up quick!

I'm not there yet but, between before and after care and summer camp for 2 kids - I would be spending the same as I'm spending on daycare for 2 kids for the year (it just would be spread differently).
I'm also spending more money on food, activities, clothes (once they get out of toddler sizes, the price of clothes goes up), etc. Also - many kids start to get into name brands in elementary schools (Nike, Under Armor, etc).

It's gets more expensive as they get older. My dd is almost 5. She does swimming and dance. Between lessons, costumes, gear, recital tickets it's a lot. Than there is all the fundraisers at school, school pictures, field trips, birthday party gifts for friends. Clothing /food is more expensive. Tuition for school. I'm spending way more per month than I ever did on diapers/formula/wipes.

I was just about to say! 
ETA -- because, think about it, there's no way I could spend more than $1,000 a month on my son's activities and extra-curricular stuff. Unless he is going 24/7 with private lessons or I buy him a horse or something 
For me, the formula was pricey. Then when that ended, it helped, but diapers alone are still costly. And then the daycare is more expensive the younger they are... So as he grew, it got a little cheaper. I just keep thinking, wow, when he goes to school and all of a sudden that $1,000 a month is in my bank account each month - that'll be a good day!

I have a 12 month old and I would definitely think they are way more expensive when they are older! Right now, my only real expenses with my DS are daycare and diapers. He does not "want" anything. DS is still BF at this point and has yet to really affect our food budget.
I teach HS and can see how sports, clothes, gadgets all start adding up quickly. Plus, I know we will need before and after care once DS is in elementary school so we'll save a little, but not much.

My kids were not in daycare but it is WAY more expensive now. WAY. The sports cost a lot of $ - both just to play and the uniforms, equipment etc. Then the music lessons, dance, gymnastics, programs (coding alone can costs thousands) etc. The food - WAY more expensive. Then there are all the clothes, jackets, gear, back packs etc. The clothes just cost more and more as they get older. Same with the shoes and all the gear. Then all the activities on the weekends and summer. The birthday parties, communions, Then it's school related stuff and programs - if you pay for school - and then even if you don't all the fundraising for school related stuff, the luncheons, the cocktail/dinner fundraisers and sports related fundraising and dinner//dances etc. . I could go on and on. I found it super cheap to have infants and toddlers. Now I hemorrhage money.

Yup!
All i know is that in Sept when DD goes to K we are going to be $1k a month richer.
I am planning on leasing out a NICE car and still having money to put in savings.
We are going to be RICH!

Yes I think you're right!
Recently I was talking with someone about private school and I heard a school was 8k a year and at first I was like no way could I afford that. Then I was like well I pay 15k a years for daycare so really I would be saving 7k lol.

If you don't have them in activities then it's cheaper as they get older. However, it can be more expensive or just as expensive if you have the following:
-private school expense
-soccer, baseball, basketball, track, karate, dance, swim
-after care or babysitting
-camp will run you minimum like 2500 for the two months and that's cheap way
I have had to kick out for costumes, pictures for dance and baseball, sparring equipment was a couple of hundred dollars, karate testung fees.
I'm not even factoring school expenses and all the "I wants" and clothes. Shoes alone are so much more money as they get older.
I can't imagine if my son is on a baseball or soccer league, traveling is 
My son was also in daycare but I spend more on him now. Before it was just daycare expense, no fundraiser, no sports activities.

I have a 7 year old and a 5 year old. They grow fast so they need clothes, they wear out their shoes faster then anything. School lunches, school fund raisers, camp and gumnastics. I paid $340 a month for nursery school. 5 days a week, 2.5 hours a day. Plus pictures for both. And now we have nursery school graduation photos. Another 30 bucks.
I def spend more now then I did when they were babies

I don't know from experience but I think longer term it's more $$. That's what scares me. Sweet 16s, religious sacraments, learning to drive, first car, gas/repairs for their first car, laptop/computers for school, car insurance, cell phone, college, weddings(really long term)....swim, music(if you have to buy/repair an instrument), karate, ballet, proms, "Please get me Uggs and video games for my birthday!!".....food bills will double/triple. Electric/water goes up with more use. "Mom can I have $ for a movie?", friends come over and eat your food.....
Teens seem extremely $$$.
Yes I was just going by my 6yr old my 17yr old stepson is a whole other thing.
Every week it's a phone call about SAT classes, driving lessons, concerts, needs shirts. A weekend with him is an extra food expense because he's always hungry. His mom says he eats her out of house and home. Lol

As they get into their teens the expenses get crazy..
Cell phone bills ( and cost of phone)
clothes/shoes get much more expensive.. no more carters lol
$$ for going out with friends - movies, eating.
tutoring
sports/activities
braces
drivers ed
prom - dress/tux, limo, tickets
car/car insurance
And if you think formula is pricey, try feeding a teenage boy. Constantly food shopping. I live at the supermarket.
ETA - Yes shoes!!! My son is in men's sizes now... he needed a new pair last weekend as his foot grew a size and a half since Christmas   Every sneaker he picked up was well over $100. Wound up with a $250 pair on sale for $175

I paid $8k for 7 weeks of camp for my 6 and 4 year olds .......
There are birthday parties, for them, and gifts for their friends, there are sports, and sports equipment -
Soccer is cheap .......Ice Hockey, is NOT
They will start becoming more concerned with what they're wearing. No buying 2 seasons ahead on sale anymore (I am still doing this, but I'm sure it will stop eventually)
There are bikes, and scooters, and video games, and iPads .......
Swimming lessons, music lessons, all of that stuff adds up.
Not to mention the 500 fliers you'll get from school requesting donations, or selling something, or a Tshirt they have to have for Field Day etc.
The diapers and formula cost a small fortune - but I don't think there's ever a break when you have kids!
Daycare costs wen't down when my older son went to K, but I still pay $500 a month for before/after care .......and when they're too old for that, but not old enough to be alone, there will be the expense of a babysitter.
ETA - OMG YES !! The SHOES ! My 6 year old is tearing throuhg sneakers like it's his job !!

ITA that it's the activities.
Dance classes, piano lessons, Hebrew school, camp, sports... it adds up quickly.
Plus their clothes / shoes / "toys" all cost more.
eta: totally forgot about before and after care from school. It never ends lol.

Extracurriculars. I have three year old triplets. Gymboree x 3 was $250/month. Pro soccer kids for an 8 week season was almost $500. These only meet once a week. And they are only 3! I shudder to think how much money it will be if all three want to do martial arts or an expensive sport with lots of equipment like hockey or lacrosse.
Also before/after care. One hour of before care for my kids is $5 per kid which sounds great till you realize it's $150/week, 6 grand per year.
