Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
An Alligator dragged a toddler into the lagoon in front of the Grand Floridian Resort.
I just couldn't imagine, so terrible and horrifying! All the times I have taken the monorail I never once thought there was alligators in the lagoon!
I have never stayed at any of the monorail resorts, I wonder if signs are posted about alligators? I know alligators are everywhere down there but honestly the thought of alligators on Dsiney property never entered my mind! It's suppose to be the happiest place on earth!!

So sad. That poor family.
There are reports that there are no swimming signs up and that the family was wading in ankle deep water when the attack occurred.

So horrible. I can't even imagine what that little boy went through and his family.
In Florida almost all bodies of water (lakes, ponds, rivers, lagoons) have gators. I went to school in Gainesville and they were everywhere. BUT being a Disney lagoon, they should have experts come in and trap them and relocate them knowing that little kids would be on the beach. Gators don't just stay in the water.
Yes there were no swimming signs everywhere, but there weren't gator warnings. I'm sure if there were the parent wouldn't let their little boy stand in the water. He wasn't swimming, he was standing in a foot or two of water.
Also, the timing was not in their favor. It was after 9pm and after dark gators go on the hunt.
Tragic all around and against all odds I hope it's a rescue and big a recovery.

This makes me so sick and sad! That poor 2 year old!!!
YES there are signs that say "no swimming", BUT they were not swimming, they were in ankle deep water. That is not swimming. The signs should say don't enter the water! The signs also don't say ANYTHING about alligators. I never let my kids near that water and not because of gators, but because I thought the warning is because of the bacteria that is in many bodies of water in FL. I was under the impression that WDW removes the alligators, but I guess that is naive huh! I can't tell you how many times I see people in ankle deep, even at the movie nights, and I guarantee gators weren't on their mind. So sad, so horrific, I can't even imagine

Ugh, this makes me mad. Where is people's common sense? It's a body of water in Florida. I thought it was common knowledge to assume gators can be anywhere? We've all heard the stories that people wake up and find them in their backyard swimming pools. Why wouldn't you think they'd be in a giant lake? I'm not sure if Disney does try to remove them when they find out about them, but that must be hard to keep up with as it's really quite a large body of water connecting many of the hotels.
I also thought it was common knowledge that the water is toxic in there and that you don't want to be touching it let alone wading in it. One foot of water is pretty deep on a 2 yo...
Not to mention the "no swimming" signs everywhere. If it's not ok to swim why would you think it's ok to wade?
I guess they'll have to make the signs a lot more specific for people since apparently people need every single safety detail spelled out for them these days. I mean, we do have "caution: hot" on coffee cups so....
ETA: I do feel terrible for the family. It's a horrible tragedy, but I'm just so sick of people not using common sense!!!!

It might be common sense for you, but for many not local to FL it's really not common sense that alligators are in all bodies of water there. I would say 75% of the non residents in a Disney group I'm in had no idea this is a risk at Disney World.
and yes, there is a difference in actually swimming and putting your feet in, in the eyes of MANY. We've stayed at other hotels on bodies of water in FL, and the signs say keep out, alligators.... at the edge of the water. I'm sure Disney will be putting those signs up today!

I agree. They're from Nebraska and alligators aren't exactly the norm there. Like I said before, having gone to school in Gainesville I assume there are gators in any fresh body of water down there. Most people don't. I'm sure there are things other people would also be naive about not being from a certain area.
And yes, I think there is a diff between swimming and standing in water. There are no lifeguards on duty so maybe that's why I says no swimming. If the signs said warning alligators, I'm willing to bet anything that these parents would not have let their kids stand in the water let alone go near it.

From what I've read, Disney traps and releases any gators over four feet.

These poor parents! I was just there and the signs say not to swim, but no mention of gators. There are people visiting from all over the world, so I am sure many of them do not realize how prevalent gators are in fl. I saw a little boy swimming in the water when I was there (my little guy wanted to go in after seeing the other little one in there, but I told him no). I wasn't even thinking of gators though, I just figured the water was polluted
On a side note, there are parasailers there who land in the water. Right?
This is just horrifying.

We have watched the movies on the beach at the Yacht/Beach club and I can't tell you how many kids put their ankles in the water!
As for parasailing, they land on the boat, not in the water

This story is so, so sad.
I am curious if the same people who condemned gorilla mom will do the same in this case...since you know...these parents let their 2 year old wade in the water in the dark where they were not immediatly able to grab them.

Really?  I mean, you're splitting hairs here. No swimming means..............don't go in the water. No wading in the water. No walking through the water. No splashing in the water. No doing the breast stroke. No swimming implies STAY OUT OF THE WATER. Period. To think otherwise is completely lacking in common sense IMO. When I see a No Swimming sign anywhere I assume that means you are not allowed to be in the water in any capacity.
It's a horrible, tragic, very sad, freak accident but it could've been avoided had they stayed out of the water that night. It's important to head warnings, it's for your own safety. I know not everyone realizes but there are gators EVERYWHERE in FL.............Disney included. You have to be hyper aware of that when you're around water in FL.
I hope they are able to recover the child's body so those parents get some closure. Very sad no matter what.

If Disney have to catch gators and relocate them on a regular basis, wouldn't u think they already have to know there's a possibility that one or a couple of gators can infiltrate undetected?!? Why would u risk that, and allow families to be near and in this case in the water!

Alligators can show up anywhere and everywhere in FL...............even in backyard pools. It's just a fact of living there. So I don't think Disney is at fault for anything here. An alligator could've just as easily shown up in one of their pools as it did in their lagoon. I saw gators everywhere when I lived down there, it's really not something they could eliminate all together. Being In FL, you just have to be aware that where there is water there is always the possibility of a gator.
