Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
I can't even imagine as a parent going through what this family is going through right now.
Poor boy. I'm heartbroken for the family. How sad.

Re: Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
This makes me so nauseous, this family goes on vacation and now their baby is most likely gone and they had to watch it happen. How do you ever, ever get past something like that? I personally did not know alligators are in every body of water in Florida. If I saw a no swimming sign I probably would think it is because there are no lifeguards or maybe water was not clean or something. This is so horrifying and my heart is breaking for this family.

I agree. This breaks my heart. I'm hoping they find him alive ... alligators don't usually eat humans, so maybe he spit him out and he's alive on the banks somewhere. I don't know, I have to hope for a miracle because reading this story just kills me. I can't even imagine how the parents feel. To not be able to hold on as an alligator grabs your child. It's absolutely horrifying.

Not that I believe a blame game should even be occurring But we all know how life and LIF goes
But..after reading these posts it's clearly obvious a no Swimming signs does not mean the same to everyone
Doesn't make anyone smarter or a better parent
So why don't we all just pray for this family.
Such a tragedy

This makes me so sick and sad! That poor 2 year old!!!
YES there are signs that say "no swimming", BUT they were not swimming, they were in ankle deep water. That is not swimming. The signs should say don't enter the water! The signs also don't say ANYTHING about alligators. I never let my kids near that water and not because of gators, but because I thought the warning is because of the bacteria that is in many bodies of water in FL. I was under the impression that WDW removes the alligators, but I guess that is naive huh! I can't tell you how many times I see people in ankle deep, even at the movie nights, and I guarantee gators weren't on their mind. So sad, so horrific, I can't even imagine
Really? I mean, you're splitting hairs here. No swimming means..............don't go in the water. No wading in the water. No walking through the water. No splashing in the water. No doing the breast stroke. No swimming implies STAY OUT OF THE WATER. Period. To think otherwise is completely lacking in common sense IMO. When I see a No Swimming sign anywhere I assume that means you are not allowed to be in the water in any capacity.
I disagree. How many times do people stand in the waves at dusk at beaches around here when there's a no swimming sign? I've done it plenty of times and I'm sure others have, too. In that case it means, there's no lifeguard and no one to rescue you if you are drowning. If there was a shark on the sign, I'd probably be much more inclined to stay away from the shore altogether.
Especially to someone that lives in a landlocked state and is visiting a theme park, unless there's a picture of an alligator on the sign, they may have interpreted it that way.

The who's-at-fault conversation starts because people can't wrap their head around something like this and people look for an answer to the HOW and WHY. It's the same thing we do when 49 people are senslessly murdered...we want to blame immigration or guns or mental illness because if we don't have the answer...we are lost. It's just human nature. I think for the most part, nobody has come out and said "OMG those parents suck and should have put their kid on a leash, how could they? They must have been on their phone!" I think we've agreed for the most part that this was a lapse in Disneys judgement to not post more...specific signage since there are varying degrees of gator knowledge.

Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
I read this story this morning and my heart is breaking for this family. What I read said that the father and mother actually got in the water and attempted to wrestle this child from the alligator. I honestly can't even imagine what they are going through and especially having to watch the horror of your child being taken like that during a family vacation.
I would never equate "no swimming" signs on Disney property like that to mean no swimming because of alligators. I would think that's because it's deep, it's not considered a body of water for swimming, not proper life guards, etc. I would never even think gators are the reason for no swimming and honestly if I was right there, I would probably have allowed my toddler to put her feet in the water and splash around. I really hope Disney has learned their lesson and puts up signs every where saying "beware alligators."

Ugh, this makes me mad. Where is people's common sense? It's a body of water in Florida. I thought it was common knowledge to assume gators can be anywhere? We've all heard the stories that people wake up and find them in their backyard swimming pools. Why wouldn't you think they'd be in a giant lake? I'm not sure if Disney does try to remove them when they find out about them, but that must be hard to keep up with as it's really quite a large body of water connecting many of the hotels.
I also thought it was common knowledge that the water is toxic in there and that you don't want to be touching it let alone wading in it. One foot of water is pretty deep on a 2 yo...
Not to mention the "no swimming" signs everywhere. If it's not ok to swim why would you think it's ok to wade?
I guess they'll have to make the signs a lot more specific for people since apparently people need every single safety detail spelled out for them these days. I mean, we do have "caution: hot" on coffee cups so....
ETA: I do feel terrible for the family. It's a horrible tragedy, but I'm just so sick of people not using common sense!!!!
I agree with all of this.
Yes it is upsetting and a tragedy. And while it may appear we are putting blame on the parents, it is more like Disney and the Disney signs (or lack thereof) were certainly not to blame. But no one has to be of fault. It was a tragic accident. Maybe it could have been prevented from the parents letting the 2 year old wade in the water. Maybe it could have been from a sign. But still... I sort of blame the parents. I don't believe they should have been in the water at all. And it is common knowledge that all water in florida has gators. Once in florida a gator walked across the street while i was on it and went from one pond to another pond, just walking on by....

Re: Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
This is horrific! I'm from NY, lived her my entire life. I have travelled to many different places. I would never think that Disney would be having movie night, on a beach, in the dark, with deadly predators only a few feet away.
I have been there with my own children, on that very beach. If I had known that there was a possibility of alligators nearby, I would choose not to go there. Two year olds can't sit still. Walking on a beach and at the water's edge would be expected.
God Bless that baby, his parents, siblings and every other person that had to witness this tragedy.

I thought alligators clamp down and basically pull their victim under until they drown and stop moving. Sadly, I don't think they will find him alive.

Really, some of you have nerve to blame the parents. This was a tradgedy. Shame on you! At this point, let's just make a blanket LIF statement that of your child dies it's YOUR fault. Cancer, you should've fed him organic or shouldn't.have passed on that malignant gene. Runs into the street and gets hit by a car, you should've been watching him. Jeez, what's the difference! This poor family was on a Disney vacation and lost their two year old, judging and blaming doesn't matter, it's not bringing him back. Bad, inexplainable s### happens in world, just have some compassion and be glad it hasn't happened to you and pray it never does. That's what I'll be doing for myself and all of you.

I read one article that said they were yelling for help to a nearby lifeguard. Was swimming allowed nearby in the same body of water? Disney should have had signs warning of alligators. I think the resort should be held accountable. You're at a family resort... why wouldn't there be a warning?

Yes, this is what I have read, ......and...disclaimer that this is disturbing to read........
and that after drowning the victim, they stash them somewhere on the bottom, whether it be under rocks, etc. until they tenderize so to speak, and then eat them.
