This story is so, so sad.
I am curious if the same people who condemned gorilla mom will do the same in this case...since you know...these parents let their 2 year old wade in the water in the dark where they were not immediatly able to grab them.
I read that the father was right there and tried to grab the boy.
Just awful. I can't imagine! The signs should have said something about alligators. I'm surprised Disney doesn't remove them from the waters on their properties. As of the news this AM, they said it's still a search and rescue.

This makes me so sick and sad! That poor 2 year old!!!
YES there are signs that say "no swimming", BUT they were not swimming, they were in ankle deep water. That is not swimming. The signs should say don't enter the water! The signs also don't say ANYTHING about alligators. I never let my kids near that water and not because of gators, but because I thought the warning is because of the bacteria that is in many bodies of water in FL. I was under the impression that WDW removes the alligators, but I guess that is naive huh! I can't tell you how many times I see people in ankle deep, even at the movie nights, and I guarantee gators weren't on their mind. So sad, so horrific, I can't even imagine
Really? I mean, you're splitting hairs here. No swimming means..............don't go in the water. No wading in the water. No walking through the water. No splashing in the water. No doing the breast stroke. No swimming implies STAY OUT OF THE WATER. Period. To think otherwise is completely lacking in common sense IMO. When I see a No Swimming sign anywhere I assume that means you are not allowed to be in the water in any capacity.
Eh, even Jeff Corwin (the gator expert) said putting your ankles in the water isn't swimming and these parents are not at fault. I'm not an idiot....but I would never equate putting your feet into the water to swimming. The beaches here say NO SWIMMING all the time and people are always standing in the water.

If Disney have to catch gators and relocate them on a regular basis, wouldn't u think they already have to know there's a possibility that one or a couple of gators can infiltrate undetected?!? Why would u risk that, and allow families to be near and in this case in the water!
That is impossible to do, but they definitely need to put an alligator sign up!

I just interpret No Swimming to mean, don't go in the water. I'm surprised that people think differently, knowing that people do maybe signs should read "Stay Out of Water" so there is no confusion.

Good point! Well there's already a comment posted that made me think of gorilla mom
Edit: actually 2
Make me three then.
The lagoon they were in was NOT for recreational use. PLUS, there were multiple "no swimming" signs. How is that not idiotic? I don't care if they are from Nebraska. Does that negate the need for common sense?
The lagoon feeds into bigger bodies of water, making it impossible for Disney to keep track of how many alligators enter. Hence, the "no swimming" signs.
Call me callous, I don't care. A 2 year old is, most likely, dead and his parents are at fault. Can't wait until they try to sue Disney.

The signs should say 'don't go in water' and preferably reference alligators, versus saying 'do not swim'. The kid was in a few inches of water. The dad was right there and grabbed a hold of him, but the alligator had a better hold. This was a ticking timebomb. Who is to say that alligator wouldn't have grabbed him if he was at the edge of the water but not in it?

Yeah I feel like if there were signs saying- caution, alligators, I'd be FAR FAR away from that body of water. If the signs just said- no swimming, I might not be as cautious as I would be if the signs mentioned alligators.
ETA- and while I know gators are common in Florida as general knowledge, I was surprised to read this. For some reason I thought that Disney would remove them or that the bodies of water in Disney were all man made and self contained with no wildlife in them. I don't picture Disney as like the Everglades, kwim? So I can see how others may not have even thought about gators there.

Not everyone have the same common sense. Common sense is based on experiences and adquired knowledge. If this ppl are from an area where there's absolutely no gators, how do u expect them to assume gators can be anywhere, especially in a place that's geared towards kids, families in general?!?
Also they weren't the only ones there, there were many other ppl who as u suggested must have been idiots for not being able to have ur common sense and discern that the no swimming signs meant also don't get in the water, on the water, near the water, even look at the water for that matter

Actually, the news outlets have reported they were the ONLY ones IN the water despite others being on the beach.

I would not have assumed gators, I would have assumed bacteria. I feel badly for the family. I do think that there is some fault for both the parents and Disney to be honest. I think if the signs said alligators I think people would have looked at it differently. I feel badly for the most likely loss of a child.

Alligator drags toddler into lagoon at Disney hotel
I don't equate swimming with walking in ankle deep water - two very different activities. But, and I could be completely wrong here, but don't alligators come out of the water and walk on land? If so, you wouldn't have to be in any water to be attacked by an alligator. And if I was at a Disney resort, (or any resort) I would absolutely expect that they would keep gators off the property and if that's not possible, have signs posted warning of the danger. I heard on the news this morning that Disney claims that they did not know there were gators in that body of water - yet they pulled 4 of them out of that body of water this morning while searching for the boy. So either they are lying or not paying close enough attention.

Ugh, this makes me mad. Where is people's common sense? It's a body of water in Florida. I thought it was common knowledge to assume gators can be anywhere? We've all heard the stories that people wake up and find them in their backyard swimming pools. Why wouldn't you think they'd be in a giant lake? I'm not sure if Disney does try to remove them when they find out about them, but that must be hard to keep up with as it's really quite a large body of water connecting many of the hotels.
I also thought it was common knowledge that the water is toxic in there and that you don't want to be touching it let alone wading in it. One foot of water is pretty deep on a 2 yo...
Not to mention the "no swimming" signs everywhere. If it's not ok to swim why would you think it's ok to wade?
I guess they'll have to make the signs a lot more specific for people since apparently people need every single safety detail spelled out for them these days. I mean, we do have "caution: hot" on coffee cups so....
ETA: I do feel terrible for the family. It's a horrible tragedy, but I'm just so sick of people not using common sense!!!!
We have stayed at Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge and Disney Dolphin. We always ride the boats. Our kids play in the sand every time and never would I have thought there were alligators there. Kids have definitely put their feet in the water and scooped water up in buckets. The Polynesian gave my kids sand buckets and shovels when we checked in the last time we were there.
I don't think it is as obvious to people not familiar with Florida and gators. People like me!
I feel so bad for the family.

I agree. They should have posted a sign watch for alligators something like that. There is a tourist attraction that I go to each year in SC (also a man- made lake) and there are signs warning of alligators.

This. We have stayed at the Poly 10 times. I planned on bringing my kids. And they would have played in the sand. And out their ankles in the water
And like a pp said,if they were on the sand that gator wouldn't have gotten him
I gotta stay away from this one. My first gut reaction is empathy and sadness. Others are blame and judgement and this poor child is likely dead

They really are. Don't they say bad things come in 3's? Hopefully there is no more tragedy and sadness in Orlando. I'd say these 3 events in under a week are MORE than enough.

That poor poor baby and his family - such sadness this week in Orlando. The unhappiest place on earth this week
No Swimming to me means No Swimming. If we were at the beach and the kids wanted to kick some water around while I stood there I would have let them. If the signs read " Danger: Alligators" then absolutely not.
With this being a mecca for millions of tourists each year they should be VERY specific with signs and pictures stating that alligators are in the water. Unacceptable and Disney should be ashamed of themselves.
Never ever "assume" anything when it comes to peoples safety.

What a tragedy!
This thing happens at least 2-3 times a year in Australia. There are so many signs that say do not swim or go in the water (I wouldn't even go near the coast, personally) and with crocodile warning signs. I did a river cruise of a crocodile river and the guide got nervous when a crocodile was following him.
You don't f*ck around with crocodiles or alligators. Are the people who lost their child from Florida? It sounds like something they might not have been aware of (i.e. not from Florida).
