Re: abortion poll

I am pro-choice without a doubt.

And yes, I have had an abortion.

It was the hardest thing I have ever done and it was also the best decision IMO.

When I found out I was pregnant, it was during such a dark, dark time in my life. I had been doing every drug under the sun and I wasn't even 100% sure who the father was. (I was pretty positive, but there was a slight chance it could have been another guy.) Train wreck is a kind word for my situation.

Was young, addicted to drugs, and was already past the point by several weeks of when the baby would have been sharing a blood stream with me, so it would have had marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine, acid, mushrooms, crystal meth, ketamine, and various prescription drugs already in it's system before the first trimester.

Should I have said "Hey I need to be pro-life here and just have the baby and give it up for adoption?" No way could I give birth to that child who was likely damaged already, and who might not have had a great life with adoptive parents, if it had special needs. Who the hell was gonna adopt a drug addict's baby?

I likely would have had to have the baby enter the system, which can be flawed. There are TONS of people who take in foster kids and such just for the monthly paycheck; yet never really care for the child and they can bounce around.

Hate me, judge me, flame me whatever....for ME the case of abortion was the best option at the time. Something like that is a case-by-case scenario and that is why I believe in being pro-choice because ONLY I AM THE ONE who has to live with my decision. Not the person down the street....not the anti-abortion activists who spit at and threw pictures of bloody fetuses at me when I entered the clinic....ME.

Re: abortion poll

Saving a life? I am all for it. Be it an unborn baby or a mom whose life is in danger.

I definitely believe that sex education needs to be stepped up in schools to prevent as many "I'm 16 and pregnant" from happening. I think that parents and adults in teenagers lives need to be good role models as well.

I applaud anyone who can make the courageous decision to give a baby up to a loving family if she cannot take care of the child, I really think they are anonymous heroes... but that said, I have tremendous compassion for anyone who has made the decision to abort as well - regardless of the reason(s) there is a unique and private grief for the one who makes that choice, so it's not an "easy out", at least not in my mind.

In a country where the minimum federally mandated maternity leave is 6 WEEKS (an absolute INSULT, imho), I feel like our political machine pays nothing but lip service to "family values". Let's take care of the moms and babies who are HERE, then worry about legislating someone else's conscience.

ITA Colette, you read my mind once again!

I do not believe that I nor the goverment should have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body. I also do not agree with abortion as a form of bc. In HS I knew a girl in my all-girls Catholic school who didn't want to "admit" she was sexually active so refused to use bc -- needless to say, she used abortion as her bc. I was so disgusted....

I just think that's really so sad Chat Icon No doubt I'd be disgusted to if it were someone I knew, I get that, but isn't it just sad that this girl has to LIVE the rest of her life with the consequences of that due to some sense of Catholic guilt? Had she been able to "synch" her sexually active life with her desire to still be a "good girl", she could have taken precautions and all of that could've been avoided, kwim? I venture a guess this kind of thinking is more common than we'd suspect...

I get a little hot under the collar on this issue Chat Icon because so often that kind of ignorance and intolerance puts women (obv. men too, at times) into SUCH a moral tailspin- and they are so young and vulnerable, it's such a shame.

Hate the idea of someone using abortion as birth control, and would like to see improved sex ed and access to contraception (and emergency contraception) to greatly minimize the "need" for abortion. Don't think it's my place to tell other people what they can and can't do with their own bodies.

ITA agree with this. I cant stand this, I wish there was a law that turned someone away for having X amount of abortions. Chat Icon

Re: abortion poll

I am a reg poster, posting under a fake name for obvious reasons!

I am pro-choice and I have had an abortion!

I was 17 years old when I got pregnant and it was because of my stupidity that I got pregnant! My mother had to take fertility drugs to conceive myself and my siblings and because of this I just assumed that I couldn't get pregnant! I know- stupid!!Chat Icon

When I found out I was pregnant, my BF and I went back and forth on what we would do. Abort? Keep the baby? In the end the decision was made for us due to medication that I was taking, medicine that causes severe birth defects in babies IF they even survive and are born. We even got a second opinion and were told by that doctor that abortion was really the only way to go.

In one month it'll be 12 years since the day that I went to the hospital, was put to sleep and aborted my baby!

I woke up from the anestesha (sp?) in the recovery room screaming and crying hysterically that I didn't want to kill my baby!

I fell into the deepest depression, and months later tried to kill myself! I ended up spending a night in the Pyshciatric ER and then was released to my parents.

For years following the abortion, I was on Prozac and in counseling!

12 years later and I still think about my baby!Chat Icon i still think about my BF from that time!

I am now married with a beautiful child, and I still yearn for the baby I never had!

By far the hardest time in my life!

I ouldn't wish the flood of emotions and the dark place that I ended up in on my worst enemy!

With all that said, I couldn't imagine being told that I couldn't abort that pregnancy! I couldn't imagine being 17 and having a child with severe disabilities or going through the entire pregnancy and then having the baby die at birth! I am thankful abortion in legal and that I had a CHOICE!!

only in the case of Rape(where you didnt consent) and in the case of the mothers health at jeopardy, i'll even go so far as to say if the baby isnt healthy in the first trimester(questionable but i couldnt blame the mother)...

when i got married I was pro-choice. Since then i went through two miscarriages(no explanation why) and losing them made me wonder who would willingly give up a baby when there were so many people like me who wanted one and might never be able to have one. Then when i got pregnant with kyle he felt so real when i started to feel the thumps that i wondered how people could abort so late in pregnancy instead of deliverying and putting up for adoption. Then he was born and i became a mushball. The joy from seeing him..... If you have sex you know there is a chance you get pregnant- abstinence is the only 100% safe route. So, you get pregnant- carry it through, give them up for adoption and let someone have joy...... people are going oversea's for babies cause so many people abort in the u.s................. just my opinion

ITA agree with you !!

Don't like abortion, don't want one for myself, and am grateful I've never been in a situation where I had to consider it. HOWEVER, I am pro choice and think they should be legal and RARE. This is exactly how I feel. Now that I am a mother, I do think we should have parental consent for minors. I would never want my daughter to be able to get an abortion (go under anesthesa) without my knowledge.

Pro choice all the way! I really believe if you don't want an abortion, then don't have one, but don't make that choice for others.

I also believe that women will find ways to obtain them if they are legal or not and to return to back alley abortions is far worse than legalized ones!

same here and ITA

Totally pro choice.
I like to know that the option is out there- and it SHOULD be out there for all women.
Forcing a woman to have a baby she doesn't want or can't afford/care for is not right IMO.

Re: abortion poll

I hate this topic bc it is such a personal thing for so many.

You read replies from people who were adopted themselves, and obvioulsy the yare against abortion for good reason.

You have other women( like myself) who believe that the option should be available to those that wish to have it, and firmly believe if it is made illegal people will still get abortions--just in a dangerous, black market Chat Icon

IMO there is no right or wrong answer,

I am glad it is legal bc I fear what would happen to women if it wasn't--but I do understand why people are against it .

ITA.

Again thank you for sharing, you did what you felt was right at the moment. You are 100% right with only YOU has to live with your decision so I just think it was very brave for you to post it.

One thing that really bothers me is the people protesting outside the clinics. I mean really if you care so much then give those women going in money to help raise the child! I am on the belief that no ONE knows exactly what is going on in the other person's life and if they act within reason we should respect their actions. Do we have to agree, no? Respect it -- yes.

I am pro choice. However I feel that like any medical procedure doctors should throughly explain what the procedure actually is and this is not always done. I know people who didnt get counselled properly about the emotional after effects and at times physical that can occur. One of my friends had an abortion at a later term and finally when she did get pregnant a few years later suffered a late term loss at 21 weeks due to placenta previa cause by uterine damage by her previous abortion. No one exlained that 2nd semester abortions come with greater risks than first trimester.

*trimester?

I think the issue here is that most doctors should not be preforming abortions after 12 weeks...
