I had a private room because my DS was in the NICU. My room was right acoss from the nursery though so I kept hearing the other babies coming in and out. I kept my door closed and I don't think I ever saw another Mom on the maternity floor...just down in NICU.

my roommate was annoying - she spent all day on the phone complaining about how her DH kept wanting to hold baby and how he was going to spoil her by holding her too much (a day old infant - imagine?).

I only had one for one day with my second child. She didn't speak English, so we didn't talk much. She did giggle with her friends when DH called his mom and talked to her in Spanish - which I thought was a bit rude) She wouldn't turn on the a/c (it was a heatwave) and that was very tough. I broke down to a nurse and they moved me into a private room.

OMG you have NO idea! i had a c-esction and was there for 4 nights of hell! and poor ds stayed in the room for the entire thing.
my 1st roomie was there the night i delivered and she kept to herself but omg she had some serious gas issues! she kept letting it rip all night and it smelled so foul. at oone point i actually told dh to change ds's diaper b/c it smelled like crap. he was like umm no, that's not him. opps. thank G-d she left the next moring b/c i was going to pay $500 a night to stay in my own room after that!!
my 2nd roomate also kept to herself and we both had our dh's sleeping in the room. holy cow could her and her dh snore! i've never actually heard anyone snore as loud as her dh! ever! it wasn't even a normal snore with a pattern/rythm, it was all over the place and sounded like a mac truck and an airplane were parked in our room.
thank G-d she left a day later!
my 3rd roomate was really nice (FINALLY!) but her ppd kicked in right away and the poor girl was soooo paniced. she cried and cried. she was like"omg they just left me with the baby and i don't know what to do with IT!" she said she couldn't even change a diaper what was she going to do with the baby. yikes, i spent the entire night babying her.
hopefully #2 will show me better roomates!

I had on roommate for the entire time, we both delivered the same day and were discharged the same day. She and her DH (I assume) were very quite. They were (again, I assume) Russian or Polish (I couldn't distinguish the language) and young. My only issue was she had the bed by the window and A/C, and she'd turn the A/C off (w/o seeing how I felt). DH brought me a fan from home after my first night.
On discharge day she left first as I was woozie from a dose of perkicet (sp?). I had about 1 hr of the room to myself when they wheeled in a new person. But since there was no room to wheel in the gurney w/o moving my bed, they had me sit in the hall while they moved my bed and set her up. She and her family were VERY loud. It was her, DH, her mom and their son, who I guess to be about 3 or 4. NONE of them were quiet. NONE of them cared that they pulled the curtain as they walked by. NONE of them cared about the fact that there was not only another person in the room (me), but that my DS was sleeping at one point. I would quietly say "Shhhhh" hoping they would hear it and shut the F' up!
Needless to say, I was BEGGING the nurse to check me out ASAP!
This was nothing....a good friend of mine had a HORROR story of a roommate! Her roomie had diarrhea in the middle of the night and crapped her bed! And then on the floor! There's SO much more to that one!!
ETA: The person who shared the bathroom, my next door neighbor was awesome..... it was none other than Erin (Eireann) from LIF!!!

The first 24 hours I was by myself as that person left in the morning. Then by the end of Day 2, they got some meanie in there who wouldn't talk or look at me. She left and I got another woman whose baby was in the NICU, I felt bad. I think she might have hated me for having my DD in with me round the clock. She was good and didn't cry much but I don't blame her for not wanting to talk.

HATED MINE!!!!! i didnt get to have my boys... they were in the nicu.. she would keep her baby in the room and keep making comments about it.... then talk about me to her friends and family that came in.... I honestly didnt think i had to share a room with someone who had there baby... they should have put me in another room with someone with the same situation as me... i cried everynite....

 c/s - requested a private room, there wasn't one available.... The room I got, the woman was leaving as I was brought in. I thought I had it! Then later that night, they brought a woman in after delivery and she had, I am not kidding, about 50 family members with her  Since I had the door bed, they kept peeking in at me when they walked by. The first night wasn't bad, but this was my first child, I was trying to BF, and the roomie was on her 3rd, and told the nursery to keep her child all night so she could get some sleep. (that never happened for her)
The next morning, I told DH to go and see if a private room opened up and Lucky me - one had. I moved into the private room for the next 3 nights and it was the best decision ever!!
 VBAC, 2 night. Didn't request a private room, but lucked out big time by never having a roomie

I requested a private room, since my dds were in the NICU, I felt extremely sad to have a new mom with her baby in the same room. Plus, the woman was getting calls on her cell phone all times of the night, it was annoying. So, the nurses moved me.

This is why I paid $250 a night to have a private room with my own bathroom and shower. Soooo worth the extra $$.

My hospital in OH is like a hotel...no roomies, wooden floors, private showers, jazuizzi tubs. And the best part is you have labor, delivery and recovery in the same room. Its great!

I paid for a private room. ETA: That was the best money we ever spent - esp. after having a csection - and just all the things that go on in the bathroom - no way I will ever share one.

I was in a four person room, and I liked the woman next to me the first night, but not so much the second night... But I guess I'm lucky - no horror stories.
