Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
I was in a quad for 3 nights.
I arrived in the wee hours of Friday morning, DD was born via c-section at 1:40 am and I got to my room some time around 5am, I had no idea who was there.
I was in the worst spot - by the door, next to a shared sink. The girl next to me was a complainer and extremely defensive, almost aggressive about her decesion not to BF - I didn't even ask her. SHe complained and had an opinion about everything.
The girl across from me was very quiet but her baby wasn't, but it wasn't that bad, we were actually in the same lamaze class and she was very sweet.
The other was a very very nice and relatively quiet woman with lots of visitors. I felt bad for her, she was Orthodox Jewish and had no visitors on Saturday and had to wait all day for her DH to pick her up.
Saturday they were all discharged and Saturday night I was all alone with DD, it was bliss except fot the fact that I got a fever.
Sunday night HOLY COW!!!! I got a roommate that snored louder than I have every heard, sounds like that just shouldn't come out of a human. I am however very glad she was there, she was having trouble nursing and asking lots of questions and it helped to see that I was having some trouble too so I was able to address it before I was discharged.
None the less I was very happy to go home on Monday.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
Both times I requested a private room, neither time was one available. With my first delivery at LIJ, the woman next to me was young, but very nice and had an unbelievable number of visitors.
My second delivery was at Winthrop. The first night I had the room to myself, but didn't get there until 11pm and was to wound up to sleep. The second and last night, I was so looking forward to sleeping, and it was looking good until 6 pm when the wheeled a girl in who had had a c section and was unwilling to take any pain medication because with her prior delivery she had an adverse reaction to it. The poor woman was in a lot of pain, and all through the night they sent various people in to try to talk her into trying something. She wouldn't budge and moaned loudly all night long. I remember thinking to myself that if I had a bat, I would have put her out of her misery (and we both would have slept). Looking back on it now, I see what a horrible thought that was for a newly hatched, second time mother

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
I was in a quad. Everyone pretty much kept to themselves with their curtains closed and was pretty respectful of their noise levels. Even the babies were pretty quiet. I was the only brand new mom, they all had done this before.
I remember being in awe of the woman across from me. She had her 3rd kid and as soon as she got into the room, she took a shower, did her hair and makeup and sat around in her cute sweatsuit. And here's me that was too afraid of showering because I had past out twice when I got out of bed. And I was too skeeved about sharing the bathroom with 3 other bleeding women.
Next time, I will have a private room.

I had a huge, private room. It was WONDERFUL!!!!
Honestly, besides the pain from the c section, I fooled myself into believing I was in a hotel. It was a great experience, especially for someone who was nervous as all hell being in the hospital for the first time ever!

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
Thankfully I begged the nurse at Winthrop to try and get me the last private room they had and she got it for me. I was in a double room my second time around but didn't have a roommate.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
With my first pregnancy I had a really nice roommate. One morning we were both crying for different reasons at the same time (hormones!) and our nurse gave us both a hug at the same time.
With my second pregnancy, I was in longer with a c/s and didn't have a roommate almost the entire time, until the night before I was released. And she was nice.
With my third, she was also nice and then when she left, I didn't have another roommate either.
I guess I was pretty lucky compared to how it could go given that you are tossed in with a complete stranger.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
I got one the last day. They originally blocked off my room to give me privacy because I was in such bad shape but I got a roommate the morning I was supposed to leave only to be told they were keeping me an extra day She had trouble BFing and her husband was there 24/7, the ENTIRE time trying to BF this child. The baby cried nonstop. I felt bad for them but I felt worse for me with my horrible epi headache for having to deal with them

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
Mine was sooo young and I felt so bad for her because her baby daddy would never come to the hospital and she thought he was out somewhere cheating on her. She apparently had a history of drug abuse. (I over heard all of this) I just hope she and that baby are ok.
She did piss me off though, because the second night she jacked up the heat and my room was literally like a sauna.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
I had a c-section and my first 3 days I had no room mate and I had the window side which was great. I didn't know this till I left, but I was also the last room downt he end of the hall, so I had light traffic around my area. My 4th day I got a roommate. She had a heavy accent and spoke in another language the whole time her family was there. She always had way more people than you were allowed in the room (At North Shore they only allow like 4 at a time and you need to sign in, but she had like 10). I found out at like 3 am when she had a bunch of visitors that she knew a doc in the hospital so they were bending the rules for her. I was very surprised to find out that this was her 3rd child, because when she spoke to the nurses, she sounded like she had no idea what she was doing. This was my first and I thought I felt like a pro compared to her. THen she snored like a jackhammer. I asked in the middle of the night if they could start my paperwork for early discharge the next day and I was outta there by 10am.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
I had the roomate from hell.
I was brought in really late from recovery and this woman, who clearly had a regular birth, kept walking back and forth from her bed, past mine to the bathroom. She leaves the light on in the bathrom and then goes back to her bed where she gets on the phone and starts yelling.
If I wasn't in so much painor had those stupid things on my legs, I would have reached for the call button.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
The first night I shared a room but didnt really get to know the girl. I dont know if she spoke any English. She was quiet though and so was I. She had a c-section so it seems she was in some pain. Then DH was my roomy for the next night b/c he got us a private room. I got a big discount b/c i work for NYU and delivered at NYU Medical Center in Manhattan. It was nice to have a private room so DH could come and stay with me.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
I had one good and one bad.
first time, had a TERRIBLE roomy. thank God she left the next evening. she was LOUD and crunching on potato chips all hours of the nite, calling everyone, telling them how weird that she's not tired at all (crunch crunch). I bit my tongue all nite, and Im a VERY lite sleeper, so I could not sleep AT ALL. I asked her nicely, but nothing. crunch crunch. oh, and her TV was blaring too!
So the next day my family came (niece's nephews, siblings, balloons, flowers and all) at this point she was finally ready to sleep. well I hope our little (LOUD ITALIANS) baby-bash in the room didnt keep her from catching up on sleep
My 2nd one, I dont remember, I was mostly alone, had one roomate that left a few hours after I got there. however my room was RIGHT outside the triage, and as I said, im a VERY Lite sleeper, and although I ADORED the nurses, and could pretty much chat with them from my bed it was too close for comfort. but it wasnt terrible at all.
My third. we still keep in touch. Sweet, loving, caring girl. we bonded right away. I reassured her of all her firsttimemommy concerrns, I cried with her in the middle of the nite when her baby wouldnt latch and she was overexhausted and felt terrible. we spoke through the curtains all nite we have pics together in the hospital and all. she's also a teacher.

Re: Another Delivery Day spinoff: your hospital roomate
Mine was awesome. She was a BTDT mom who also had a c-section the day before. She was very helpful and patient, and was all about giving me great advice. When her DS & DH came to visit they were quiet and respectful, and we all were chatting one day & it turned out we had friends in common.
The last day I was in was a whole other story.
