I was a ballerina. I had 4 bunion surgeries and four other surgeries to remove broken, dead bones in my feet. I must say, the bunion surgeries were the WORST. My bunions came back, that is why i had to do it again. i need it again, but I give up, it is so not worth it in my opinion unless you really, really need it. I went to the best doctor in NYC and I know he did a great job, but the post op is awful. Unfortunately, I made the situation worse. I was afraid to put my weight on my foot and ended up ripping tendons and causing a hair line fracture in my foot b/c I was walking funny. This brought on monhts of physical thearpy learning to walk properly 'again"
Oh, and the pins set off metal detectors at airports
See..this was the only thing that seemed bad to me - the fact that the bunions might come BACK! All that pain and suffering so nothing....isn't there a way they can now prevent the bones from shifting again?
Did u try orthotics? Custom made in shoe devices...... ( Sorry I have been working many many years for a DPM,) maybe this will help....
I went through 3 pairs of orthodics even before we tried surgery. My doctor tried all non-invasive types of treatment first, surgery was my last resort b/c I was in so much pain.
LANA- Don't do it yet, you are still dancing. I was told I would never dance again after the surgeries. I still have alot of pain, I still dance, but it is not the same!
Maybe he should have given them to you after all the bandages came off, and you were healed, this way it would have "trained " the bones in the foot not to go back to where they were. Also, keep in mind you can have residual swellling for a year.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I have 2 friends who had it. One of them thinks her Dr. was horrible. She has less pain than she did before but she still has pain and she tihnks her scars are worse than they had to be.
The other person is a patient of Dr. Bodamer, just like some of you. She is really happy with her results.
I may need a minor procedure on my pinky toe for a bone spur. It is a little tiny spot that feels like I am being stuck with a sharp needle sometimes! I may try this Dr. Bodamer if he is on my new insurance.
