Re: Anyone know what is going on in Fort Salonga?
Heather, Wendy, Danielle and I all live in the same area and i could not agree more with their comments s in re: to the reckless driving of the construction and sanitation trucks. not only do they drive too fast they often drive in the middle of road forcing oncoming traffic to move to the shoulder.
my prayers are with the victim's family. what a horrible tragedy.

DH just emailed me that the intersection is still shut down.
thanks for letting me know, I have to go another way home now. I figured I would be able to get through by now. Wow!
B&C and Pulaski intersection was still closed as of a half hr ago. if coming from the west, take old bridge and cut through gun club. if coming from the east, take orchard.

I grew up on Bread and Cheese and it's been YEARS like this. Aside from barreling down Pulaski, the trucks fly down Townline and B&C which have few stop signs and MANY cuves. In many parts, there is no place to move over.
I keep thinking about anyone who witnessed this happen, too. So horrible.

Re: Anyone know what is going on in Fort Salonga?
I live very near there.
My DH is at that same intersection everyday at that time. Today, he had to get gas so he went a different way
Normally, I'm at that intersection at 6 am everyday. Today, I should have been there at that time... I was planning on that exact time, on the way to visit my dad, but DS was taking a long time eating breakfast...
That poor woman and her family I just pray that the woman felt no pain

I had to go pick up my daughter from my parent's house at a little after 4 and I saw that it was closed....but there's always something going on there...so I thought nothing of it. What a terrible thing to happen.

Re: Anyone know what is going on in Fort Salonga?
Here is what I don't understand... If she was at the stop sign and he was making a left to go the opposite direction she was (because the nose of the truck was facing the opposite direction than her car), then his truck would have tipped to the right/outside, wouldn't they?
In order for it to tip the other way, he had to have been pulling the wheel severely to the right. The only way I could see that happening is if he cut the corner too sharply and then tried to correct in the middle.
Just horrible. What a horrific way to die.

I live near there too, as do my parents and my husband's parents (off of Townline actually). I couldn't agree more about the comments being made about the trucks!
My DH saw the car being loaded onto the flat bed after it was all over. My heart goes out to the family... what a horrible accident.

she was at the traffic light stopped. and supposedly he was making the turn, but his brakes failed, so it seems he couldn't slow down coming into the turn and tipped over. I can understand how it happened, but IMO he had to be going way to fast, and it just seems odd that a large truck like that would wait till he was in the intersection to hit his brakes, where they then supposedly failed

I completely agree...that is what I said to my DH last night...the truck had to be going very fast around that turn to tip over like that. I don't think drivers realize how much speed they gain coming down the hill.

Also, the whole brake failure thing in general makes me wonder. I mean, these companies are notorious for not keeping up on the maintenance of their vehicles. I just hope it wasn't negligence on the companies' part which is why the brakes failed.

I personally think his story about his brakes failing is BS and that will come out in the investigation. They can find out if the brakes failed or not...

I agree. Why would he have initiated the turn if he had no brakes? He would have known prior to starting to turn.

I couldn't agree with you more!! Brakes need maintence and person who steps on them. Without these they fail. But somehow, I still don't believe they failed.
Her poor husband was on the news last night. He lives just down the road, he was so sad. They were showing pictures of her with her 2 kids. Its soooooo sad!

your so right! and I have actually been at that intersection when the garbage trucks refuse to stop at the red light as they are coming down the hill so they hold down the horn as they go through the red light... No witnesses said he even warned anyone with his horn, and he should have kept going straight if he knew he had no brakes, because again, he should have used them as he was coming down the hill so he would have realized prior to the turn they weren't working. And don't they have emergency brakes? My car sure does, and that would have been the 1st thing I pulled up on when I realized I wasn't stopping!

Re: Anyone know what is going on in Fort Salonga?
After my last post I was actually going to write - if they failed at all. I stopped myself because I didn't want to sound cynical but DH was the one who said, if they failed - why didn't he just go straight?? Why would you attempt a turn, in a truck, with failing brakes?? Oy.

Dani, I was going to say the same thing at the begining to, but I hate to accuse someone of something until its proven. But it just doesn't make any sense. And if he went straight he would have automatically slowed down because he would have been going up the next hill.

I know I shouldn't be surprised at people's negligence and stupidity, but I am. Even if this wasn't caused by the driver of the truck, that's just crazy that they act that way.

This is what I keep saying!!! I have been at that intersection several times the past few days running errands with my grandfather. I noticed so many drivers slowing down as they turn looking at the road. And I still can't figure out why he didn't lay on that horn, go through the intersection and lose speed going up and careen off the side by the orchard.
I know hindsight is 20/20 and I'm SURE he is filled with guilt but as a truck driver, I'm also sure he had more training regarding situations like this. Anyone would know that speed and mass plus a sharp turn don't mix.

Stuff that that scares the cr@p out of me because no matter how careful a driver you are- you could be just sitting at a light and BOOM you're dead.
Really goes to show you how short and fragile life is! I was thinking the same thing. It could have been me in the car with my son

It sounds like he lost control of the vehicle because of the momentum of the turn, and didn't count on someone being there.

Does anyone know if she was laid out at Clayton last night? We drove past at 8:00 and the line to GET IN THE DOOR was still all the way down to the corner of Indian Head, 1 hr after services started. If it wasn't her, it was certainly someone influential...

We were in the area as well and I though, wow, that was someone very special. I'm not sure where she was.
And did anyone see on the news 12 yesterday?? they were interviewing people because tons of people are complaining about the trucks too!!!! I'm glad to know its not just me. they are constantly using b&c hollow rd as a cut through. Supposedly the cops are going to beef up their patrols and crack down on. I feel like they do that every few months, and it doesn't matter. the truck drivers just give the tickets to their company and continue to use the road when they shouldn't.
Someone else suggested stop signs. It would prevent A LOT of the accidents, but i don't think it will deter trucks, and the accident that happened monday could still happen

I saw News12 last night and was because even as they were interviewing the residents of B&C Hollow, trucks were flying by! I use that as a cut through from 25A to Pulaski and vice versa quite a few times! I definitley think Stop Signs (and cops sitting there when they go up) will help or heck even a traffic light or 2! I told DH I still can't get the story out of my head! That poor family and all those who witnessed it! I think I read in the Newsday article that the car behind her, the woman was going to go to the hospital on her own (Im guessing to get checked out). Something needs to be done and NOW! Shouldve been done a long time ago!
