I was just reading an article about a NYC fertility clinic that’s inundated with women wanting to get their eggs harvested and frozen because of coronavirus. Insanity IMO.

What???? Why though?

It’s amazing to me how so many people on here are epidemiologists and psychologists diagnosing the situation and people from their posts alone!

Where is the empathy? People are scared. The mockery and judgement on here are astounding.

So, I am buying some extra household supplies and shelf stable food in case it is difficult to get to the store. And no, I do not suffer from paranoia.

Agreed! The high risk groups are elderly and people with underlying health conditions. It always feels like they are expendable in this type of situation. “Oh well they were 67 and had other health conditions.” As if it makes it ok. Where is the empathy?! I have both types in my family as I’m sure most people do and I’m scared for them. So for them I’m ok with the media causing hysteria. Do you realize how many people DON’T wash their hands?? If anything more people are washing their hands and paying attention to their hygiene which in my opinion we are all better off for that!

I don't believe anyone said anything that lacked empathy toward those that are most vulnerable. And that's exactly my point. People that act selfishly leave others to have to go to other stores to hunt down basic necessities, like the elderly or people with health issues or pregnant women, etc. , thus increasing those people's chances of being exposed to risk.

People are talking about the lack of compassion and respect toward others when some people walk away with a cart full of toilet paper or other basic necessities leaving bare shelf behind. Not the people that buy 2 boxes of cookies or whatever else instead of their usual 1. The people that stick out their arm and drop every last box into their cart. And yes those people do exist. I don't think Nell was referring to people that bought +1 as being in need of help.

I'm glad to hear some stores are restocking quickly.

We are not doing anything different. But my company has suspended travel to certain countries and is encouraging people to cancel non essential travel within the country. Also, if someone you live with has traveled to effected countries, you have to stay home for a certain time period.
That has made me a little weary that they implemented this.

The news needs to exaggerate and cause panic. It's good for ratings. It gets people to watch and stay glued to their TV's.
If it's not this, it's something else.
Terror threats.
Hurricanes.
Diseases
The economy
The elections

It's their job and how they make money.
They LOVE the big headlines.
Then it fades to oblivion when the next big news maker comes along.

I guarantee you that if something, God forbid, really bad happened, like a terror attack, we wouldn't hear another word about this virus.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

I am not doing much differently and am not really worried about dying from this virus. Personally I think tons more people have it in the US, and have had it, but the symptoms were so mild that they didn't even know and thought it was just a cold or cough. Not every person is running to be tested. So, it's out there already and really there is not much we can do except try to maintain good hygiene.

What does however worry me is if the freaking out and media scares continue and it starts to affect being able to go out and buy regular necessities. I still have no idea why the water would suddenly stop flowing or the electricity would suddenly be turned off. And do people really only stock a few days worth of toilet paper in their houses? I just don't get it.

I know right? DH is always at BJ's and or Costco and I swear to you we have enough toilet paper in the garage on any given day to support a small country of ass wiping.

It kind of reminds me of something else- whenever a big snow storm is predicted the stores are sold out of shovels.
I mean we have the same shovels for 20 years. Do people throw their snow shovels out every spring?
Who is buying all these snow shovels constantly??

We are the opposite on that as far as everything is concerned. I don't like to have a lot of stuff in the house. I never do well with Costco/BJs memberships because I end up with a ton of crap we won't eat. So yes, I stocked my pantry a week ago just in case I don't want to have to run to the supermarket every other day the way I do now.

Yes, we are definitely a nervous family. I posted a few weeks back about being concerned. We have asthma in our family my parents are elderly with multiple health issues Im scared for them and my family with all of our issues. I understand what everyone is saying but this is new territory in today’s world and it’s not just going to go away. A family member in the scientific field has already told me it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better and it may take very drastic measures to get things under control. It’s also a little misleading to say the flu kills more. First, the flu has a vaccine So many have some level of protection. This is all new - and May continue to mutate. As I was told it’s comparing apples and oranges - it’s not the same. Time will tell though but we are definitely altering some of the things we are doing, where we are going and now have wipes Lysol masks and bleach very handy and in all cars etc. I won’t touch a dirty debit machine again/ door handles etc. May sound crazy to some but with “underlying medical conditions” we are not taking chances and trying desperately to reduce our risk of catching it - May still though.

It's definitely going to spread and get worse, but the reality is we're just not equipped and prepared to handle it as a nation.

There is a man from Fort Lee NJ being treated for it but they still have to send his test to the CDC for confirmation. The news reported it as a presumptive case. Why not report it as a case when it is 100% confirmed.

The report said he was 32 and is doing ok.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

Honestly more people may have it then we even know.

I read this article today and this is interesting...

"The vast majority of people [with coronavirus] only have very mild symptoms, and thus might not be aware they have this strain of coronavirus versus the common cold," Dr. Mordel said.

That said, though the headlines about deaths from coronavirus can be scary, the risk is actually very small. "The overall mortality rate for coronavirus is 2 percent, and while this is much higher than this year's flu at 0.1 percent, the data is still quite limited out of China and Iran — the two countries with the highest number of cases,"
He continued: "We don't know what the true denominator is, because if most people only experienced very mild symptoms, how many people have actually had coronavirus? We may have tested only the more apparent (and severe) cases, which could lead to inflated mortality rates."

For all you know you or someone you know could have had it and thought it was a bad cold.

I think a lot more people have it than is being reported because they're not testing. As of a few days ago they've only administered something like 500 tests vs the thousands that other countries have administered. Do we even have the tests? I read we don't. The CDC stopped reporting the number of tests being given. And like you said there are a lot of milder cases that are unaccounted for which skews the numbers. Then the fatality rate being reported keeps changing and we don't know the true rate yet.

why the fatality rate keeps changing and may be different for each country

my take away is that if the symptoms are so mild in most that they don't even know they have it or think to get tested- how bad can it really be?
How many people have had awful viruses they thought were flu and just chalked it up to that or something else?
One time, about 5 years ago I was so sick I thought i was dying. The doctor swore I had flu. Tested negative. Fever of 104, sicker than I had ever been. I thought it might be the end for me that is how bad I felt.
For all i know that was some form of corona virus - who the eff knows what kind of nasty virus it was.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?

My sister’s friend had a cold and went to get tested for coronavirus just in case. Turns out you can only get tested at certain places; your local urgent care, doctor, etc don’t even have the test.

Yes that’s true. You’re supposed to call a certain CDC phone number and they’ll tell you where to go. Urgent Care centers are not equipped with the tests and they probably don’t even want you there anyway.
