I'm not paranoid but I have stocked up on extra food uhh case we are forced to stay home. I don't want to panic if they put the state on lockdown. Not that I think they will di that but IF they do, I dnt want to deal with supermarket crap.
This is crazy. Locking down a state. They don't do that for the flu, which is way more rampant. Crazy.
I highly doubt they will ever lock down a state for this. It's not the fuking black plague. How would they even do that from a logistical stand point? Like in the movie Outbreak from the 90s with Dustin Hoffman and Renee Russo? Tanks riding down our streets? White sheets tied front doors? People need to get a grip.

I also think this is nuts. There is ONE confirmed case in New York City.

I was going to say, sorry but this IS paranoid behavior. Im reading stories that people are stocking up on bottled water. Costco can't keep them in stock. People want it because they fear being quarantined. I don't get you. You have running water! Makes no sense at all.

I think a good therapist might serve some people better in life than stocking up on bottled water. Just saying.. there is help for this kind of behavior and paranoia. Maybe they need to seek that out over a case of water and toilet paper.
And yes- your taps will still run. Enough with the bottled water.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
I’m ready to be flamed here
Why is it a problem if someone buys extra water and canned goods if it makes them feel better? If they are building a bubble and clearing shelves to have their own massive food pantry - I can see saying they could have a problem.
Why nitpick because of concern? You (the general you) don’t feel the need to change your routine. Others do.
That should be ok without mentioning someone needs therapy for stocking up on supplies that ease their fears.
Come on people. Forget corona virus. It seems There’s a lack of compassion virus floating around long island

I agree. And from a public health perspective this is going to be a mess. The virus will spread. It’s up to us, the healthy people, to be diligent about handwashing and staying home when we’re sick. You know, so we don’t kill someone’s grandma or immunocompromised child.
Coronavirus is expected to spread more than SARS and MERS. It has a higher mortality rate than flu. While I’m not over here stocking up on bread and milk, I am concerned about the widespread illness this will cause. I don’t love the idea of another virus to infect people or how this will overburden hospitals and healthcare workers.
Sometimes, people can show concern for others. Novel concept, I know.

Because none of those things are going to help you. As someone mentioned you will still have running water. The masks are useless. The state isn't going to "shut down" so no need to hoard food. What this paranoia does do is prevent people who really need the stuff from getting it It's a form of hoarding. I saw something today that they are worried that doctor's offices and other medical professionals are having issues getting the masks that they actually NEED because paranoid people are hoarding them and now their is a shortage. And FYI those masks are useless against this virus because the sides aren't sealed. But I guess they are the latest fashion accessory now. Crazy paranoia is also what is causing some of the stock market crashing too. So now it's affecting the economy as well. Maybe some people need a reality check. Facts rather than fear. And saying someone needs therapy isn't a knock. True paranoia and overly worrying about every virus, bug, storm, terrorist attack, etc to the point that doing something useless to the situation like hoarding bottled water gives you a false sense of calm or control is a condition that would actually benefit from therapy. I can't imagine having to live like that and yes, I'd probably seek help. No shame in that.

You state none of things are going to help you. Maybe YOU. but for someone else, it may help them feel a bit more prepared for the unknown. So it does HELP them.
We aren’t talking about terrorists, storms or anything else other than this latest virus. Just another virus to add to the list of things that can sicken us.
I have the facts. I am not afraid to leave my house. Am I getting on a plane to anywhere tomorrow? Nope. Unless absolutely necessary because it’s a risk. I also don’t like to travel during peak flu season either. I don’t need to lose a week of my life to a fever and feeling. Like total dog shit. I also have fibromyalgia so when I get sick, even a regular cold, I go into a flare that lasts weeks. It’s not fun. I understand people and their concerns and don’t hold it against them. Just as I don’t hold it against those who would lick a shopping cart to prove the point it’s not a big deal. you do you and I’ll do me

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
It goes both ways. It's called having some consideration for your neighbors and not buying every roll of toilet paper you see. There's buying an extra bottle of purell to have on hand and then there's clearing out every shelf for miles. There's NO hand sanitizer left in the country. None. THAT'S bananas. Check Amazon. Have you ever seen AMAZON run out of a product across the board? No sanitizing wipes, gels, sprays.
People are clearing out all the toilet paper they can get their hands on. Why? Are they expecting to have explosive diarrhea while the state is on "lock down"?? Costco has no toilet paper. What are other people supposed to do, shit in the woods?? Gather foliage??

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
Oh and let's not even mention the masks. There's a very real problem and discussion to be had when HEALTH CARE WORKERS who need the masks can't find the masks because every Susan in the country bought them all up and is hiding them in their underground bunker in preparation for the lock down.
How about some consideration for the people working on the front lines. Can they get some purell at least??

Yes, That's the point I was trying to make. It's inconsiderate and rude that to make yourself feel better you should leave everyone else without basic necessities. Buying bottled water for this situation is the equivalent of wearing a tin foil hat. It will do nothing for you other than a false sense of control. Maybe find another outlet to ease your fears. That's why I brought up therapy.

Of course not because this sociey is all about ME! Me, me, me! I don't want to have to have a sniffle or a fever. Let me walk around with a mask that doesn't even work but makes me FEEL like I'm protecting myself. I want to make sure I can wipe my ass for the next 40 years when we go on this imaginary lock down! Eff the health care workers.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
Here's our government's own website about preparing for a pandemic. The first thing on it says get a two week supply of food and water.
I'm not buying water bc we drink our tap water but as someone who doesn't hoard food I have considered stocking up on a few basics (I would probably still have less than the average family of four in my pantry though). Just sharing the perspective that this is not all media hype and tin foil hats. I do think it's going to get bad bc of the mild symptoms and long incubation period. I'm not worried about my healthy immediate family but I do worry about other close relatives with heart disease, respiratory issues, or my grandparents who are in their 80s.
Forgot the link lol https://www.ready.gov/pandemic

My husband went to the supermarket and aside from the hand sanitizer station to wipe your hands and carts down, everything was fine. We were also able to get water too.

It feels like people think everything will shut down like we've been hit with a month long hurricane. Power will still be on so we can cook, and water will still be fine so we don't need pallets of water. With the threat of the schools being closed, I'm surprised there isn't a shortage of wine and tequila.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
Another angle - supplies are also selling out because many are buying things in the US and trying to ship things over seas ie: face masks/ respirators, etc. No-one knows the outcome of what will happen with the virus, the “experts” recommended a 2 week supply. It was reported that a nursing home today had an outbreak imagine if that same outbreak happened in a distribution warehouse or trucking company - you cannot receive goods if you don’t have people to process and deliver things( of course this would have to be in high numbers but you just don’t know). Definitely not saying to wipe shelves clean per 1 family but when multiple people do the same thing of course supplies will run low which is why, IF, this becomes something worse than it already is there is no reason not to have the essentials that your family rationalizes as adequate on hand - whether that be water, toilet paper, medicines, bleach, etc. With the exception of certain medications, those types of items will last and when this passes you save yourself an extra trip to the store for that week. Que sera, sera.

Hand sanitizer won’t even kill the virus completely. It’s being bought up for nothing.

It’s amazing to me how so many people on here are epidemiologists and psychologists diagnosing the situation and people from their posts alone!
Where is the empathy? People are scared. The mockery and judgement on here are astounding.
So, I am buying some extra household supplies and shelf stable food in case it is difficult to get to the store. And no, I do not suffer from paranoia.

I buy bottled water because tap in NJ is gross. So I am sort of upset I can’t get what I regularly buy. The Costco near me is EMPTY. No chicken, no wipes, no sanitizer, no toilet paper, no paper towels, and no tissues. Oh, and no water. I need my water darn it.

Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
Holy crap, I mention that I bought a few extra things at the store and I need therapy? Wow!
Judge much?
And While I HIGHLY doubt they'd lock down the state, we see how crazy people get before a snowstorm. So I'm sorry for buying that extra loaf of bread for my freezer. Or the 8 pack of toilet paper instead of my usual 4. Or an extra box of my kids favorite cookies.
Eta: I have not bought any purell and not one mask.
I just bought extras of things we normally eat. I didn't clear any shelves and I'm not depriving my neighbors of anything so that I can stockpile my bunker.
I still trek into flushing everyday.
I'll go call my therapist now.

Re: Are you changing your plans and routines because of coronavirus?
Where I work is seriously having to ration face masks. I can’t access them as easily as I usually can if I have to run to see a patient in an emergency. It’s pretty bad. It’s made me think that if people really DGAF about how their mask hoarding is affecting healthcare workers than WTF am I doing risking personal exposure on the front lines to help treat the ill. If I get infected now I’m inadvertently bringing the virus home to my family and your town, and by infected I am not only referring to COVID. There are other respiratory contagions to be worried about that are going around.
