Babysitter hourly rate

I was just wondering what the going rate is for babysitters.

I was given the name of 3 girls and the two that I spoke to, one charges $15 an hour and they other said between $12 and 15. I can't believe how much they charge or am I just out of the loop.

We have no family around and need to finally get out!

Re: Babysitter hourly rate

Ours is $10 per hour. But she is in the neighborhood, so no travel.

Very true!

waterspout does and she pays 10/hour so I do not think that price is THAT unreasonable

I think 15/hour is ridiculous, especially for a night time sitter, where my children would be sleeping the whole time

Technically, I am still home when she is here. She is 71 years old and lets me sleep every once in a while after my overnight shifts. And another time she was here so I could do some construction work.

We really need to find someone so we can have a date.

I think it really depends on where you are.

My sister has babysat in the Hamptons and also Manhattan and she ahs made as much as $25/hr for two kids.

ETA: I never said it was unreasonable, just that sometimes it varies from place to place

I pay $10 and hour, and actually she then said $8 an hour was plenty. She is a special ed nursery school teacher, and perfect. The other girl I use occassionally, I also pay $10 an hour to. I try to stick to grandma who is FREEChat Icon

Re: Babysitter hourly rate

If you look at the rates on Sitter City, average is $10-$15 and hour.

You should be able to find someone for $10 and hour, especially when DC is sleeping.

Re: Babysitter hourly rate

I live out east- the hamptons and the going rate out here is $15 an hour and up!! I pay $13 an hour for my babysitter - one child and I work from home so no major responsibilities except for the entertain DD. Most of the girls who replied to my ad wanted $15-$20.

Exactly. The kids are sleeping and the sitter is being paid $15 an hour. That's one expensive night out. These girls wouldn't even make nearly close to that amount working a job at the mall, etc.

Exactly...and even the jobs at the mall where they make less they ahve to pay taxes, etc. Baby-sitting is cash.

I guess if I were a millionaire and lived in the Hamptons I would pay my baby-sitter $20/hr. Unfortunately I live in merrick and my husband is a cop so I'm definetely not paying someone more than $10/hr to watch TV while DS sleeps if we go to the movies.

It depends where you live and who you are looking for, meaning are you looking to hire:
-a teenager
-do you need a babysitter or a nanny(full time or part time)
-someone with no experience or very little experience or someone who has years of experience and long term employment history with at least one family .
I still babysit sometimes and I charge $15-20 in Manhattan( I have years of experience) I guess if I babysat in Queens I would say $10-15 depending on how many hours and on few other things.

actually they pay more for nighttime babysitting in Manhattan, especially on the weekends. Not sure about other places.
And the babysitter doesn't care if the kids are sleeping or not, she(he) is still working. Time is moneyChat Icon

Re: Babysitter hourly rate

Do you mean for a once-in-awhile sitter? Or for a full time daycare provider? That seems high to me. I pay my neighbors daughter (who is 14) $5 an hour for 3 kids for an occasional night.
