Re: BAKED french toast recipe

I made this the other day and I don't know what I did wrong, but it baked for like 45 minutes and was still all mush.

It's not you. I think that the recipe as shown has too much milk/egg mixture. I didn't use all the egg/milk that they called for. Next time (if you make it again) - try to pour the egg mixture over it until there is maybe about an 8th of an inch excess on top of the bread. Give it a minute and make sure the egg settles into the bread before you pop it into the oven.

I'm sorry to hear that, I wonder if it has anything to do with the bread? I always make with challah(sp) bread and it comes out perfect!

Re: BAKED french toast recipe

I used 6 eggs and 2 cups of milk.

I also had 2 layers of bread in the Pyrex dish. I used Wonder Bread.........(Whole Grain--White) cuz I wasn't sure how it would be with Wheat.

And wherever there were spaces I'd break pieces off a whole and fill it in.
Then pour the egg mixture evenly over the very top layer and let it all soak and put in the oven at 350 for 35 min.

I did notice.....it puffed a little at the very end.....so I had to pierce it to let the air out. LOL

Exactly what I did, but I used Arnold Bread which is a little bigger than Wonder.

I used 6 eggs and 2 cups Evap Milk / Condensed milk to make the mix .. BUT I didn't pour it all on. I used 3 layers of bread and wound up using about 4/5 of the mix.. maybe a little less. I poured it until the mix came about an 8th of the way over the bread.. then I stopped, let it settle in and popped it back in.

I doubt this would have made a difference...but I'm just curious......did you use Whole Milk? I used whole.....I had 2% but decided, nah, let me not just in case. Otherwise, I can't figure it out why yours was so liquidy....

Re: BAKED french toast recipe

wonder bread and other white breads are very soft and airy...they absorb a lot of liquid.

I use either brioche or challah when making french toast b/c of the denser nature of the bread, but i think Peppridge Farm sandwich bread would work better than wonder bread b/c it's probably the densist white sandwhich bread I've ever tried.

you could also try using a loaf of baguette or italian bread

*disclaimer, I have not tried THIS particular french toast recipe, but with regard to the mush issue, I don't think it would vary all that much recipe wise. I HATE mushy french toast. hate hate hate.

That's what I forgot to mention.. I don't use Wonder or typical white bread ever. I made mine with a thick whole grain bread. I desperately dislike balloon breads - but would probably use half the egg mixture if I used that kind of bread.

Now I'm making this too!

I have 2 loaves of Challah @ home and plan on bringing this as a Christmas dessert. My DH wants me to add Chocolate chips as well.

So if I have a nice Challah bread, chips do you think mine will be too wet?

Do I need a sauce? I know bread pudding traditionally has sauce.

Re: BAKED french toast recipe

I made this yesterday and everyone loved it! I also put some sliced bananas in one half like someone suggested and it was really good. Next time I make it I might try adding some pecans.

I made this on Christmas eve morning with chocolate chop challah bread. I put sliced bananas in between the layers. So good! I wish that I had more right now!

Re: BAKED french toast recipe

I made it from Challah for Christmas dinner with choc. chips and I used the Paula Deen recipe. The next time I would make more of the liquid b/c the top was too dry.

Also, I made a fab quick brown sugar sauce which people poured on it.

Re: BAKED french toast recipe

just want to share that this recipe was AWESOME!!!

I used 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of eggnog and added a little nutmeg to it of course.

I used Challah and Whole Grain Cranberry Raisin Flax bread, placing them intermittently in the pan

so, so, so goodChat Icon

Re: BAKED french toast recipe

So I made this baked french toast Christmas morning and it was a HIT!

I made a few small changes though.

Instead of sliced bread, I used Italian Pandoro Cake (usually next to the Panettone at the bakery) and instead of milk, I used gingerbread eggnog.

It was FANTABULOUS!
