Re: Balanced billing from LIPA
We do it. It works well for us. We switched over after receiving a $400 bill one month! We pay about $125 a month now.

Re: Balanced billing from LIPA
I don't do it. I actually read my meter. I like to pay for what I use. This way, I know I'm not paying more than I should be. Also, by seeing the changes in the bill, I can try to monitor our usage better and try to cut back on our bill.
I do the same for our gas bill. I read the meter every month and call in the reading.

We do. And when we didn't use as much as they anticipated we would, we got money off AND they lowered the monthly payment. I LOVE knowing exactly how much I'm going to pay every month.

I still don't get this. You still end up paying for what you used. You don't get free electricity. If you're over/under whatever amount you'll either get a bill or a check at the end of your year. And then the next year they will raise/lower your monthly payment appropriately.

I don't do it yet but want to sign up for it before baby #2. It will be nice to have a real budget every month - not just guess our useage.

We have done it for about 14 yrs. I just got my bill yesterday and I have been paying $120/month. Next month I pay $165 and then it gets lowered to $110. It's not alot but it is something :)

Re: Balanced billing from LIPA
I know about what my bill is going to be based on the time of the year and budget appropriately. (My bill doubles in the summer months.)
In the summer months the money we dont put into oil goes to electric - and in the winter the money we dont put to electric goes to oil. Done.
Personally, I would rather pay for what I use, when I use it instead of them keeping my money and keeping track. I dont have enough time to track monthly usage to make sure they're reconciling properly. Plus, I dont want to be stuck with a possible large bill at the end of the year for overages.
ETA: I just dont understand how it works and maybe thats my problem with it. The previous poster's example. She pays 120 a month. Yet next month the bill is 165. Then after the 165 bill is going down to 110. But how can the monthly bill go DOWN if obviously 120 a month wasn't high enough since there is a higher payment next month of 165? Shouldn't the payments be increased monthly to cover the increase and not lowered?

They estimate from my usage from the last year how many kilowatts I will use next year and the price. They take that and divide it by 12 months and come up with my new bill. My estimated usage is something like $1,300 + change for the coming Sept-Sept. Not sure why they couldn't just put the $3.75 in the bill each month but that is how they do it.

Right - how it considered balanced if they just give you the same bill 11 months out of the year and then charge you the difference for month 12? And in reality, since you used more than they estimated last year, how can they estimate that you'll use less next year? You'd think they would choose more or at least stay the same as this year.
11 months your bill was 120 bucks Month 12 is 165. So this year you used $1485 dollars worth.
So next year they are charging you 110 bucks a month for 11 months - totals 1210. So if you were to use the same amount of electricity next year as you did this year, your 12 month bill would be 275 dollars.
*shrug* Maybe it's some crazy formula, but it just doesnt make logical sense to me. Eh, logic who needs it.

I don't have the bill in front of me so I would have to look at the exact amounts. My bill has always either gone down or stayed the same so I am happy-lol!! An extra $20-$40 one month is not a big deal to me. My estimate for the entire year is $1,300 and change so I don't think that is so bad.

Yeah. I wasn't talking about the prices specifically, whether they're fair or not - just using your numbers as an example. ;)
I'm more talking about how they can call it balanced but it's really not. For some 20-40 extra on that 12th month could be a big deal thats why I dont know how they can tout it as balanced billing when they potentially set it up for a huge bill on month 12 by lowering your monthly when the year previous you already went over your allocation.

We are purchasing soon and I am trying to get some idea of what we may pay

I guess it is hard to estimate to the exact dollar depending on the weather, how much you use, etc. They have done a pretty good job for use all these years estimating but I am sure, it might not work for others. I also like that I pay the same amount for at least 11 months out of the year. I do the same for my oil bill.

Re: Balanced billing from LIPA
I don't like balanced billing for anything.
I like to know what I used, when I used it.
Same goes for my oil deliveries. No balanced billing for that either.
