can we talk about diet? what we should/should not be eating? I wonder if I'm giving her a gas problem...

There are a lot of different theories out there on what will give a bay gas.

I never found anything that really upset Alexa....

If you think somethign you are eating is affecting her then I suggest you journal everythign you eat for a bout a week and see if you can find a pattern to anything.

SOme things I've heard of causing gas issues is dark green veggies, beans onions and garlic.

Did you ever get her on a pro-biotic. She may be really gassy and uncomfortable from all the antibiotics she was on. Basically the antibiotics kill all the good gut bacterial that help to break down food and gas and when baby doesn't have that they get very gassy and its not because of something YOU ate.

Without probiotics it can take MONTHS for her GI system to re-establish a healthy gut again.

The pro biotics worked WONDERS for ALexa

HELP! Chat Icon Chat Icon i just feel like the BFing thing is not working for me!

a little background. DD is 17 days old today. she was 9 lb. 2oz. at birth and 8 lbs. 11 oz. at discharge (Which was a Wednesday). She had her first ped. appt. on that Friday and she was down to 8 lbs. 4 oz. the doc recommended supplementing because of the continued weight loss. i would nurse 10-15 minutes each side and then FF. she gained 12 ounces in 3 days and was an even 9 lbs. by Monday.

Doc recommended to continue nursing and only supplement if i felt she wasn't getting enough. He said to let her behavior dictate. well, we did that for a week and at the next appointment she was down again to about 8 lbs. 11 oz.

essentially, she will latch on (sometimes she's fussy, but not always) and nurse for about 10-15 minutes each side. my left side seems to be easier for her. we do this every 2-3 hours, but then the minute i put her down, she is crying for more. i will put her back on, but when that's done, she is still crying and then she'll suck down a 2 oz. bottle of formula. very rarely does she not finish the bottle, but sometimes when she does i'm like, maybe she IS getting something? so basically every feeding, it's me "nursing" and then me or DH giving her 2 oz. of formula.

also, i have never felt engorged. i don't feel a let down of any sort and my boobs are never hard or painful. i don't even know if i am producing anything. sometimes i will pump instead of putting her on to see what I get and i only get about a 1/4 to 1/2 an ounce from both breasts. Chat Icon if that's all she's getting no wonder she's hungry.

i went to a BF support group run by a lacation consultant and she recommended massaging the boobies before a feeing (no luck) and warm compresses which i will try today.

any suggestions? i am getting so discouraged. i am starting to dread feedings... i feel like that's all i do all day and we're not getting anywhere anyway. Chat Icon

Are you drinking enough water and eating enough calories? Make sure you drink a big glass of water before and after nursing to keep your supply up.

Also, you can't really tell how much milk you get by pumping. After my first baby I would get at least 6 oz every time I pumped, and any child after that I was LUCKY to get 3 oz. WIth my DS Ryan I also never got the engorged feeling, and I nursed him until he was 15 months.

Try the warm compresses. Also, I massaged my breasts during a feeding (mostly to unclog any areas that felt hard)

Good luck, trust me, it does get easier Chat Icon

when do you feel it? When you start to nurse? If so that is your let-down reflex... You won't notice it as much after a few weeks

Maria, I stupidly never mentioned the pro-biotic at her appt since the ped decided to take her off the antibiotics right then. Is this something I need a prescription for? Thanks honChat Icon

Nope, no prescription. you can get it at any health food store. You are looking for an INFANT probiotic with at least 3 different types of bacteria. The best kinds are the ones that are refridgerated.

Thanks pharmcat, blissful and greeneyes for replying to my post.

I feel i am eating a lot. I am losing weight (which is a nice plus for me!) but i do feel i eat a lot. I am also drinking a lot of water, but i will try being sure to do it right before a feeding and see if that helps.

i will post again in a few days to see if there has been any changes.

Hi. Glad to hear that you went to the support group. Sorry I missed it, I was a bit under the weather.

I saw some girls mentioned drinking water before feeding, but I also find drinking water during feedings helps too.

Don't get discouraged. For awhile, I was pumping, breastfeeding, and supplementing every feeding. It was exhausting, but I kept at it and it all worked out. You can do it. Chat Icon Breastfeeding is definitely a commitment, but really worth it. How often are you pumping?

How do you know after a feeding that its enough?

15/20 mins on each breast? DD is only 6 days old so we're still learning how to work with each other with latching...

Sometimes I'll do 15/20mins on each breast and she's okay after, falls asleep etc

Sometimes after she'll cry so I'll give her 1oz of breastmilk(pumped) to supplement...

I"m trying to avoid formula but if she's hungry still after that I'll give her formula or a bit more BM (depends on how much I have in fridge)

So do you kind of have to guesstimate?

Everytime she cries I first offer her more to eat, is that okay to do?

DOes she unlatch herself when nursing??? Its not uncommon for a newborn,, especially 6 days old to have to nurse for 30+ min on each side.

WHen she slows down eating try doing a few chest compressions to get a little extra milk in her. If she doesn't want it she will unlatch herself. A lot of times they get sleepy towards the end of feeding but aren't quite full yet. THe chest compressions helps to get a little more hind milk (fatty milk) in them. I posted a link on this thread to a website with lots of great videos on latching and chest compressions.

Feed her as much as she want to eat.... SHe can't overeat at this age. Try those chest compressions, I bet they will help tons. I was able to get Alexa to eat a little more this way...

Thanks for your advice! I think at night I'm just feeding her BM and if need be, formula, because its too much stress at night, I'm tired, she's tired and I can't get her to latch on properly...and then she's on forever!

A few more questions:

When you guys say oatmeal helps with milk, regular oatmeal or can it be instant oatmeal?

Also, besides bonding, what's the difference between pumped breastmilk and breastmilk from BFing?

Right now I'm making enough BM to feed her during the day, night and then a little extra....like right now I have 10oz in the fridge....DD is only a week old today.

Is pumping and formula feeding okay? I'm not giving up on BFing yet, but its so frustrating....just trying to come up with back up options in case to not drive myself crazy

thanks for any help Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Is pumping every 3 hours sufficient?

Will pumping produce more milk or less milk compared to breastfeeding? I'm having a much better time pumping than breastfeeding because DD moves so much...so I'm contemplating

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I was wondering if someone could tell me what is going on with my dd. I see the pediatrician this week but was hoping to figure out what it is sooner.
My dd is 8 weeks. From the very beginning I thought she was very gassy. We tried mylicon, gripe water etc. I don't eat the things I hear can cause gas like broccoli, garlic, onions, etc. Everyone in my family keeps telling me bf babies aren't supposed to be gassy. Could I be doing something wrong when feeding her? I think she has always been lazy with latching correctly and maybe swallows too much air?
Lately its gotten much worse. The past 2 weeks about 2-3 feedings a day she will eat from one side fine and then start on the second side and start to cry. I'm pretty sure its b/c of gas b/c its like she wants to eat but can't. And as soon as I sit her upright and try to burp her she stops crying. I try putting her back on after burping and will start crying again. I do this several times and usually just give up and put her down for a while and after a half hour/hour will try again and she is usually fine to eat again.
I don't think its b/c of lack of milk or anything b/c my breast feels full and I can usually see plenty of milk on her mouth.
She was always able to eat from both sides fine until about 2 weeks ago and its so frustrating for her and me. This happens when she bottle feeds pumped milk also. Could it have anything to do with allergies or reflux?
Has this happened to anyone else?

One more question... sorry this is so long. Around the same time this started I noticed she doesnt go #2 everyday anymore. Its like one big poop every other day and I feel like once she goes she is so much better, its like for that day and a half she is so gassy and pushing so hard. normal?

I am definitely not an expert but sometimes DS is gassy after BFing or during. I try to stop him a few times and burp him during a feeding. I also try to make sure he is positioned more upright rather than laying down. These were suggestions from my ped and they seem to work well. Sometimes he is gassier than others. I avoid the gassy foods as well. The Mylicon drops work well for us.

FENUGREEK USERS

I just started taking this last night and now 24 hours later I am wondering if it is giving my 3 week old gas?! She has been ultra fussy, gasy, and crying all day like she is in pain. The only change in my diet has been the fenugreek pills. could this be it?
thanks

i am only pumping about once a day. Usually at night so DH can give her the little bit I do pump to DD and then some formula so I can sleep a little bit. but i am not sure if i should be pumping more?? everyone says that pumping is not indicative of how much milk the baby gets anyway. also, every single time i pump i only get a 1/2 an ounce from both breasts combined. there has been no improvement in the pumping area and honestly, i need to be able to pump a lot more than that because i will be going back to work and would like to have some milk stored.

also, how does one know when they're done. i feel like she's never done. she can nurse for 30+ minutes plus if I let her and the minute i take her off she cries and then sucks down a bottle. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm pumping 5-6x a day and getting about 10oz for the day (I'm just 1 week postpartum)

Is that enough?

Donegal, I was kind of in your situation and that's why I'm pumping more cause I feel like DD would be on my breast forever and still hungry!

at 1 week PP if you are nursing AND getting 10 oz a day that IS FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!! SERIOUSLY.. thats A LOT of milk. It takes 2 weeks for your milk to FULLY come in and 12 weeks for your supply to regulate.... Keep it up mama you are building a great supply!!!!

SHe may not be sucking the whole time she is nursing. TO tell if she is swallowing watch for the following pattern... Suck, suck, suck then a {pause} and the jaw drops down a bit (That is when they swallow the milk)

if you notice the baby isn't swallowing as much anymore and just sucking do some chest compressions to get her drinking again. I posted a link to a bunch of AWESOME videos on this tread I think 1 page back. ALso, if you rub lightly right BEHIND the angle of the jaw you can stimulate the nerve that makes them suck more. I use to do this with ALexa to get her to eat more.

CHeck out the videos and try the compressions and other suggestion and see if she gets a little more milk in.

You are doing a GREAT JOB mama!!! KEEP IT UP!!!

Have you tried hot compresses before pumping? I would put a heating pad on my breasts for 15 min before pumping. Also, the ONLY WAY I could get milk out when pumping was to pump one breast at a time and I had to do manual compressions to push teh milk down and out.

Have you tried doing compressions while BFing???

Try these two tricks and see if they help any. It sucked I could NEVER go hands free..this was the only way to get milk out.

Also, what are you 3 weeks PP? when do you get off maternity leave? If you can give yourself a break for a few days from pumping and nurse, nurse, nurse. If you are getting to stressed about the pumping you won't be able to trigger a let down reflex and won't get any milk. I use to have to put on a tv show and distract myself when pumping or I wouldn't get anything out.

It's AMAZING how much psychology and mindset plays into nursing and milk supply!
