Thanks everyone!

Now in order to build my supply I should pump after every feeding?

I have been pumping 1-2 times per day but I'm guessing I need to pump more. Currently I get about 3 oz each time I pump. Is that about right?

Thanks again! I really appreciate it!

That is great that you're getting that much! When I was trying to build up my supply, I would pump an hour after feeding DS. It really helped me.

Hey! Great thread!
Where can i get those pills and tea??? thru a Dr???
thanks Chat Icon

Whole Foods sells both the tea and the More Milk Plus products.

You can also get the tea (organic mother's milk) at some supermarkets. I know some stop and shops carry it.

For the past few days- DS is not eating nearly as much...

He gets very fussy at the breast after a few minutes...

He usually eats 10 min on each side...and Im lucky if Im getting 5 min on one side...

What is going on...and how long do I let this go on?? What can I do?

He had a few pumped bottles last week..and IM so nervous that it has put an end to nursing..??

Are you burping him enough? It could be gas. Also, what are you eating?

It could also be a nursing strike. My advice is to just keep trying to nurse. DS will take what he needs. Maybe he has become more efficient at nursing and feels full after 5 minutes.

Does he seem hungrier lately or not as satisfied?

He cries and sucks on the nipple after 5 min-which makes me think he is still hungry BUT if I put him down and give him a paci- he is fine...

It seems he only eats real good at night...???

I noticed Ryan used to nurse better at night also. Usually when they are tired they get a better latch.

I'm sorry, but I don't remember how old your DS is.

But I would suggest increasing your water (to maintain your supply) and try offering the breast more during the day. If he is ok with the paci, maybe after 15 minutes try putting him back to the breast again to see if he takes it. Sometimes babies only nurse for comfort and not for hunger. Once they have reached the comfort level they let go of their latch and go about there day, so to speak.

I am getting 0 milk when I pump (when I usually get 4-7oz) DS is crying, and sucking on his hands looking for more food...

It seems his hunger strike, has left my body making close to no milk...

Today- I had lots and lots of water... and started mother milk (3xs today) He nursed every hr in the morning and ever 2 hrs since...(I also pumped after a few nursing sessions)

There was 2x's he was SOOO hungry still that I had to give him some pumped milk from the fridge....

Where did I go wrong... Im so discouraged and sad- is my milk going to come back?

I cant figure out the problem...

Earlier today while nursing- he'd latch and then unlatch and cry- I thought "maybe he is "full" and stopped nursing and pumped the remainder of the session (trying anything to get my supply up) sure enough 10 min later he is crying and sucking on his hands... he downed 2 oz from the bottle sooo fast...

So I had the milk (obviously- because I pumped it out) AND he WAS hungry- so what was with the fussing and pulling off the breast???

I hate giving him the bottle now- BUT he either refuses to latch OR nurses a good session and after 20 min is still crying for more...

I dont want to give up.... but after being a cow all day, and dealing with a crying baby Im so discouraged...

Please help!!!

I know it's easier said than done, but please don't give up!! Perhaps you should call a LC. It may give you peace of mind and she may be able to point out a bad latch or something else.

My advice is to continue trying to nurse. Then pump to keep your supply up. Put him to the breast as often as you can. If he cries, give him a few minutes and try again. But seriously, also call a LC.

Good luck! Please FM me if you need support. Chat Icon

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

My DD is 5 days old

I can **sometimes** get a good latch and she'll be on the breast for about 15-20mins

If its not a great latch, I'll keep trying to put her back on for about 15-20mins

BUT

after that she still cries after I put her down so I give her whatever colostrum/BM I've pumped from earlier (which is NOT a lot at this point postpartum)

and then I supplement and give her 1-2oz of formula

I'd like to get her used to only breast and BM from bottle and avoid formula

ANY Suggestions?

We had a Lactation consultant come over yesterday to help with the latch...that seems to help some

It's hard to find a comfortable position (enough pillows, enough hands to push DD's fingers away)...I want to be able to do it w/out DH having to kind of SET me up into a position

Also, DD curls her tongue a lot, or seems sleepy and falls off....does it take some time normally to get a good latch?

Thanks for ANY HELP!Chat Icon

I'm kinda where you are right now....with the latching on, sometimes coming off....I get stuff pumped and then baby downs the bottle....so I know I had milk....

I think its getting this latch down properly

I had a lactation consultant come over yesterday....its helped a bit....I still need to practice more and more with her latching on

feel free to FM me, no advice here but I'm having your struggles too I think

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

How many feedings can you miss before it affects milk supply?

I have a business function that I HAVE to go to when DD is about 12 weeks old. I'm going to be gone from about 4 pm to around 11 pm. DD usually cluster feeds at night. It is going to be impossible for me to pump during this time. The best I can do is manually express some milk in the bathroom to relieve engorgement.

Will missing multiple feedings for this day affect my supply?

Thanks for your help.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

One day should not drastically affect your supply. I went to a wake/funeral when DS was 6 weeks old. I missed 2 feedings and was so engorged when I got home. I pumped and it was fine the next day.

Stupid question about using a double electric pump

I have the medela in style double pump

how the heck do you put them on your nipples and still turn the dial on???

I have to have DH do it, but otherwise I can only do 1 at a time, right? Or am I missing something?

They make a hands free bra which I bought but haven't tried yet. I usually just lean one side on the bag (which is on my lap) when I need to turn the dial on or off. It is awkward.

For moms who have BF more then 1 DC:

Did you experience any differences? Does the pain in the beginning still happen?
Did you produce milk prior to giving birth?

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

HELP! Chat Icon Chat Icon i just feel like the BFing thing is not working for me!

a little background. DD is 17 days old today. she was 9 lb. 2oz. at birth and 8 lbs. 11 oz. at discharge (Which was a Wednesday). She had her first ped. appt. on that Friday and she was down to 8 lbs. 4 oz. the doc recommended supplementing because of the continued weight loss. i would nurse 10-15 minutes each side and then FF. she gained 12 ounces in 3 days and was an even 9 lbs. by Monday.

Doc recommended to continue nursing and only supplement if i felt she wasn't getting enough. He said to let her behavior dictate. well, we did that for a week and at the next appointment she was down again to about 8 lbs. 11 oz.

essentially, she will latch on (sometimes she's fussy, but not always) and nurse for about 10-15 minutes each side. my left side seems to be easier for her. we do this every 2-3 hours, but then the minute i put her down, she is crying for more. i will put her back on, but when that's done, she is still crying and then she'll suck down a 2 oz. bottle of formula. very rarely does she not finish the bottle, but sometimes when she does i'm like, maybe she IS getting something? so basically every feeding, it's me "nursing" and then me or DH giving her 2 oz. of formula.

also, i have never felt engorged. i don't feel a let down of any sort and my boobs are never hard or painful. i don't even know if i am producing anything. sometimes i will pump instead of putting her on to see what I get and i only get about a 1/4 to 1/2 an ounce from both breasts. Chat Icon if that's all she's getting no wonder she's hungry.

i went to a BF support group run by a lacation consultant and she recommended massaging the boobies before a feeing (no luck) and warm compresses which i will try today.

any suggestions? i am getting so discouraged. i am starting to dread feedings... i feel like that's all i do all day and we're not getting anywhere anyway. Chat Icon

Hang in there. I feel like by 3 weeks I was better at it. But by 8 weeks I was completely comfortable and confident. Before I knew it I was 12 months in and weaning.

Are you drinking enough water? Drink a full glass of cold water right before you nurse and/or pump. Try eating oatmeal. I found both of these thing increased my supply. If those things don't work, maybe you want to try Fenugreek capsules or the More Milk Plus. I've also been told that the medication Reglan increases milk supply so maybe your OB will write you a prescription for it?

First off Chat Icon I NEVER: A) felt my milk come in B) Felt engorged or C) felt the letdown reflex and at 5 months Alexa is EBF

You CAN NOT MEASURE how much milk you produce by what you pump.... so throw that thought right out the window

Ok, EVERY TIME YOU NURSE You need to drink a 12 oz glass of water before you nurse and afterwards, if you aren't you aren't drinking enough water.

Are you eating enough calorie wise? I was losing to much weight in the beginning and my supply dipped because of it.

Here is a you tube video that shows how you can tell the baby is drinking and explains chest compressions that you can do while you are nursing to make more milk flow to the baby towards the end so the baby gets more of teh hind milk (rich fatty milk)

Have you tried cutting out all dairy from your diet? It might sound crazy, but I had a very similar experience trying to nurse my DS, and it turned out he couldn't handle the dairy I was eating. He would eat then scream and pull off even though I knew he was hungry. Hang in there, I hope it gets easier for you. Chat Icon
