Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...

There are only two things that I can think of that haven't already been mentioned:

1) No one told me that they strap your arms down to the table (straight out from your sides) for a c-section. I was shaking uncontrollably from the epi, so I guess that is why they do it. My teeth were chattering too, but I didn't feel cold at all.

2) I had a reaction to the epi where I just started crying - tears just pouring down my face. The nurse kept telling DH that I was nervous and upset, but I really wasn't. It was just my natural reaction to the anesthesia. It really freaked DH out though, he didn't know what was wrong.

To all the first timers - don't worry, none of this stuff is as scary when you are actually going through it Chat Icon

i just remembered

the epidural can make you itchy beyond belief. as i was pushing i was scratching myself like crazy! i shook as well--as if i was extremely cold. it's normal!

question - the bleeding afterwards - is it heavy bleeding or just as if you have your period?

Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...

No one tells you how much it hurts AFTER the birth. They turned off my epi so I could push better and the pain AFTER she was born was worse than labor to me. Everyone tells you you are so overwhelmed with love for you baby that you forget the pain- I guess they are all much better people than ME! I thought the post-cramping was horrible.

If you do breast feed, you will occasionally have horrible cramps as you feed the baby. You also have increased bleeding sometimes. This is your uterus shrinking back to normal but it scared the bejesus as out me.

The maxi pads they sell in stores all have that "dry weave" on the top that totally burns and rubs the stitches the wrong way(at least they did with me). I would get a few bags of the hospital ones from your nurses if you could. I would have killed for more hospital pads.

Everything else written is such good advice- I wish they had this thread the last time I was pregnant.

comes and goes- I found it heavier while I breast fed and then it would be lighter. It goes on for a while though- 6-8 weeksChat Icon

Honestly as you go through it you are in such a daze- hearing it is definately scarier than experiencing it- I promise. Chat Icon

I agree with a lot of what's posted here, but the one thing not mentioned and that I didn't know is that you may lose bladder control after pushing that baby out, so have Depends in your house!

Take everything they're offering in the hospital. You'll use it eventually!

As far as clothes for leaving the hospital... if you can get it on while your pregnant then it's good to wear home. I bought a few VS sweatsuits and that's how I determined they'd fit.

Have nursing bras and/or sleep bras at home if you plan to BF. I had to send DH out to buy a bunch.

Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...

Everything has pretty much been said..I have gone through this 2 times and soon for my 3rd.the only thing different was with my second I had a spinal instead of an epidural. I had throwing up and was having a hard time breathing. They had to put oxygen on me due to my husband realizing something was wrong when I wasnt answering him..If you dont feel right make sure you or dh tell the doctors it can be very scary if your afraid to open your mouth..

Also speak up if you dont want people watching your birth like nurses in training or doctors in training..I said sure why not then felt uncomfortable with them there..

Oh I forgot one. It's very common to get "air pockets" in your upper back after a c-section. I wasn't ready for that at all and it was very painful and had no idea what was wrong.

WHat everyone has already mentioned is very helpful..

One that I can add is to take the hemroid cream that they give you in the hospital. I didnt have hemroids, but I put it all over my pad, and the coolness of it made me feel sooo much better down there (it burns after you push a baby outChat Icon )

ETA-And the pads that they give you at the hospital are GREAT. They are soooo big and cushy. I had my mom run out to Target and get me the super big cushy ones....so much better than the normal ones.

Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...

Good thread!

1. Use the hospital gown (esp if you have a c-section). No sense soiling your own clothes.

2. I overpacked for the hospital and didn't use a lot of the things I brought, so try not to overpack.

3. Bring your own pads - the bigger the better - you will bleed like you have never bled before!

4. Have socks with those rubber-grippy things on the bottoms so you don't slip.

5. Breast pads are a must!

6. Buy thank you cards and stamps ahead of time - you will need them!

Enjoy the ride! Having a baby was the hardest thing I've ever done, but the best!!!

Even if you have a c-section you still bleed a lot (4-6 weeks). I did not realize that would happen.Chat Icon

If you have a c-section DO NOT stop taking the gas medicine they give you - I continued it for several days after I got home too. The gas pains can be horrific

I just wanted to add that everybody's experience is different. I think this thread is a great idea but it would have scared the hell out of me. Remember girls, it's nothing that you can't handle. My biggest piece of advice: TAKE THE EPI! It was AMAZING. You will be surprised at how stong you are (at least I was) and that I was able to get through it (duh). BFing isn't all that painful if you have a proper latch. If you plan on BFing, I highly recommend reading up on it before hand...A LOT!. I highly recommend Breastfeeding Made Simple.
I had the baby blues really bad. I cried everyday for the first 2 weeks. Just go with it and cry. LOL But some of my friends didn't experience this at all
I was overwhelmed with the amount of visitors on the first night. I had just given birth at 9 am and I had AT LEAST 30 visitors that evening. I wish DH would have told friends to come up the next night and just have had family the first night. Also, I sent the baby to the nursery during visiting hours because of course everybody wanted to hold her. Don't be afraid to tell people to wash their hands!
One last bit: enjoy every minute because it really does go so fast! Good luck mommies!

I have to agree that I would be scared too if I was reading this thread to (my original post included) if this was my first child. But let me say this...

I'M DOING IT AGAIN...so you know it can't be THAT bad, now that I know what I'm in for!!

Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...

I am a big wimp - and none of it is as scary as it sounds when reading this thread.

If you have a csection - def. take the gas pills and drink the gas tea. About three weeks later I had the most unbelieveable gas pains.

Take everything from the hospital that is not nailed down. I took the pads that they give there - and they were great.

Have foods prepared or order in lots of take out!

The best tip I can give anyone who has a c-section is to WALK BACKWARDS. A student nurse told me this and it helped SOOOO much. It takes the pressure off the front of your body. By the time I got to the bathroom I could stand upright! Chat Icon
