question - the bleeding afterwards - is it heavy bleeding or just as if you have your period?
My bleeding was really heavy and lasted about 5 weeks after my c-section. Also it's not just bleeding. You pass clots, some of them big. I got so scared in the hospital when I passed a really big clot and I called the nurse in. She said it was totally normal.

I can't really add much to the list but...
I don't know if it's a c-section thing or what...but you'll be asked to breath into this contraption with a tube and a ball several times a day. What the heck is that thing?!?
Also, catheters do NOT hurt coming out, so don't panic. The same thing with the staples and steri-strips if you have a c-section. But...be prepared some doctors insert the catheter before you're numb. This happened to a friend of mine and she said it was horrific! Do not let them put it in until you're properly medicated!!

I passed a HUGE clot (a little bigger than a golfball) at home while in the shower, I freaked out. I called the hospital, but they said it was ok.

My doc put the catheter in after they had already given me the epi for the c-section...did not feel a thing. And them taking it out did not hurt at all either.
I wanted to add that I had a great birth experience. The only thing (as I mentioned before) that I didn't know about was the bleeding.

What is the purpose of a catheter? Do all women get them before labor?

I had my catheter put in with my scheduled c-section before being medicated and it didnt hurt either..It felt like a little pressure and that was it..And as for it coming out same thing no pain there.. so no one should be scared of that.I know initially I was because no one tells you if it hurts or not.

There are only two things that I can think of that haven't already been mentioned:
1) No one told me that they strap your arms down to the table (straight out from your sides) for a c-section. I was shaking uncontrollably from the epi, so I guess that is why they do it. My teeth were chattering too, but I didn't feel cold at all.
2) I had a reaction to the epi where I just started crying - tears just pouring down my face. The nurse kept telling DH that I was nervous and upset, but I really wasn't. It was just my natural reaction to the anesthesia. It really freaked DH out though, he didn't know what was wrong.
To all the first timers - don't worry, none of this stuff is as scary when you are actually going through it
They did NOT strap my arms down during my c-section. That would have given me a panic attack. I asked ahead of time and my OB said he doesn't do that. It was a big relief.
I almost threw up due to the anesthesia during the c-section. I told the dr. immediately and he put a drug in my IV that made it go away in two seconds.
My faced itched like crazy afterwards- reaction to the anesthesia.

Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...
Baby blues are NO joke. Every book mentions them but it's not really on your agenda when you're reading the books so you don't pay attention. You will cry and cry and cry. I cried every day for almost 3 weeks about everything. The baby cried and I cried wtih him. I felt like I was losing control of my life and it was scary. EVERYONE told me "it'll get better" and while I knew it would, it was utter hell in the meantime. THIS DOES PASS!!! Write it on a million post-its and stick them up everywhere in your house. Also, having someone with you always with the baby helps too. If not your DH, your mom or MIL. Someone to help you out during those first few crucial weeks is SO important.
Don't feel like a failure if you have to have a c-section. Some people go into labor thinking that they will have this great natural delivery and it ends up being the complete opposite. C-sections are NOT as bad as people fear they are. The most important thing to remember is that your baby will arrive safe and sound.
If you do have a c-section, people tend to forget rather quickly that you had surgery. Remind them. Especially your DH. He will go speeding down the aisle during your first big outing to Target while you're left in the dust. You will tired, sore and achy. Listen to your body and rest when your body tells you to. It IS major surgery and you WILL need time to recover.
You will need help when you get home. Schedule visitors and don't be afraid to ask them to help you out by bringing a meal. Take them up on the offer when they say, "Do you need anything?"
Don't let this list scare you. It's a different experience for everyone and many of the things that you dread going into labor are really not half as bad when all is said and done.

My SIL told me this and I thought about it through both births (my ds was almost 10lbs and delivered in 3 pushses)....The harder you push, the faster it's over
and, all the bad stuff gets forgotten a lot faster then you would think.

Re: BTDT Moms...We should make a list of "what to expect" after delivery for the first time Moms...
1. you are going to CRY and a lot!!! I hated motherhood, wanted to give the baby back, it was terrible. Only lasted about 1-2 weeks, but it was scary.
2. the first night home is rough!! The baby doesn't sleep more then an hour or two at a time and you're exhausted. Let your DH help, do the feedings if he can or hand the baby to you if you're BF.
3. the gas pains after the c/s can be BAD. I had gas in my shoulder and it was SO bad.
4. Spinal headaches are not fun. if they are bad and aren't going away, get the blood patch! I couldn't sit up in bed because the headaches got so bad. As soon as I got it the headache was gone!

And this maybe TMI - but they give you a little "mommy kit" that includes that little water bottle to rinse down there when you pee, aspirin, witch hazel pads, creme (to help with stitches tears in your va jay area) to help with the burning - USE IT ALL AND TAKE IT WITH YOU!!! Take some of the extra long mammoth sized pads - you will use them for a day or 2 after vaginal delivery - AND TAKE THE STOOL SOFTENER!!!!! OMG - trying to go #2 after pushing a baby out is NOT EASY!! TAKE THE LITTLE PILLS and bring them home with you
this is what I am dreading the most... i am more afraid of the peeing and pooping issues and hemmroids than delivering the baby!!!
