C-Section questions...
Sorry for the barge again -- I hope to INTRODUCE myself on here real soon -- but in the meantime I am just waiting semi-patiently...
I may have to schedule a C-section and wanted to know people's experiences afterwards -- the good, the bad, and all in between.
How long until you were on your feet? Did you need a lot of help at home? Did you insurance cover any kind of home health services, and did you need them? Anything else -- thanks!
I know, I went from asking about natural childbirth to this - man plans, God laughs....

I had a C-Section. Was in the hospital for 4 days/3 nights. The morning after my C-Section, the nurse had me up, dressed and walking around. By the time I got home, I was able to walk around and did not need to take the pain medication.

ETA: I was up and down the stairs the day I got home to. I had to post on LIF
I didn't need any help.

Re: C-Section questions...
If you have a c-section, they normally keep you in the hospital longer - 4 days is the standard, instead of 2 for natural birth. By the next morning, the nurses had me getting out of bed and sitting in the rocker in my room. By day three I was up and walking about, and took a shower on my own. So, by the time you get home you should be fairly mobile, though still quite sore. It was definitely a struggle to go up and down stairs for the first week, but manageable.
My MIL stayed with me for 3 weeks at home to help with meals and laundry, but honestly, with DH's help, I probably *could* have managed without her. If you have friends and family who can pitch in, you really don't need a home aid.
By the end of week 1, I remember taking my first stroll through the neighborhood. So, you probably won't be quite as helpless as you may imagine.

just about same here - I continued to take the pain medication - but I felt very good. I never thought I'd have a c-section and eventually needed one. It really was fine.

Re: C-Section questions...
I was in a lot of pain right after my C section. The next day the nurses got me up way too fast and I fainted. I stayed in the hospital for 3 nights and did feel much better by the time I got home. By then, the hardest thing was just getting up from a lying down or sitting position.
My incision became infected and I did require home nursing care, which my insurance did cover.
Good luck! Hope you go it naturally!

Re: C-Section questions...
Kara - Dr.Bergman did my c-section surgery. He was amazing! Gracie was born to the new U2 album that he uploaded to his ipod.
I was walking day 2 and had my epi out on day 2. I went from the epi to darvaset (pain killer) and the pain was manageable and not too bad. NSUH was incredible! The nurses, doctors, lactation consultants were phenomenal and I felt great after I walked around. I hope this answers your questions. FM me if you want to.

Re: C-Section questions...
I was in the hospital for 3 nights and went home the afternoon of the fourth day. I had the c/s at 8:55 and was up in the shower at about 6 am. The nurse insisted I take a shower, and I was fine with that. I got up in the hospital as much as I could and walked the halls quite a bit. I believe that getting up and moving around is key.
The pain at home was not unbearable. I barely even took the pain meds, maybe just a few times at night. I still was able to tend to DS and the only thing that was difficult was getting up from laying down and from sitting. Also, going from standing to sitting hurt. But, I was out of the house and walking around the day after I got home from the hospital. I was basically on my own right away and was fine.
It really was not bad at all. I thought it would be so much more painful than it was. The most difficult thing, as I said was getting up. So you should be fine during the day if you have DH do most of the night time feedings (if he can) this way you don't have to keep getting up and down, like I did.

Re: C-Section questions...
Kara,
I had a c-section, and I would do it again... the next day I was up and walking around, you kinda have to, to get back in the swing of things. It did hurt for abit getting up and getting back down, but I needed to feel semi normal again. I was in the Hosp from Friday (had her at 6:37pm) and I left on Tuesday. I really didn't have much help at home Dh was home with me till the following Mon. My mom stayed with me during the day on Mon and my Aunt came on Wed. I wanted to learn how to do everything myself and I think I did an ok Job. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with your decision

Re: C-Section questions...
I was scheduled to be in the hospital 3 nights, but DH "forced" me to stay for 4. At first, it was hard for me to get up and going. I tried to walk as much as I could, but I didn't want to overdo it. I had plenty of family around me so i din't have to worry about too much. Give youself as much time as you can to get back on your feet. Good luck!

Re: C-Section questions...
I was in the hospital wed-sunday. I developed a fever from the epi and that complicated things- couldn't see baby for a while. On Friday morning I tried to go to the bathroom myself but I almost fainted. On Friday night I started walking just a bit. On Sat they took the remaining tubes out of me and I was a new person! I showered, dressed and felt much better. I only needed the pain meds through Monday. After that, I had advil for a few days- no complications after that.

Re: C-Section questions...
Ahh ladies thank you so so much -- you are making this much easier for me to face!!
After MAJOR back surgery (4 hours under) -- I think I can handle it, just wanted to be sure I can take care of me AND a baby!! My mom is 79 and wouldn't me of much help -- so that's not really an option. I would only have her come over if I knew I wouldn't be able to handle things alone. DH will stay home the first few days after I return from the hospital to help, so we should be OK.
Thanks so much for the encouraging stories!!

Re: C-Section questions...
Good Luck! My only advice is to try not to do the stairs too often - I was able to have everything I needed on the main floor and only went up when it was time to go to sleep.

HA don't I wish -- multi-level split - my bedroom is on one floor, bathroom on another, kitchen and living on another, den with tv down another half flight, and the basement is my home office!!
I may move into the guest room which is at least on the same floor as the bathroom, lol...

Re: C-Section questions...
I had an unplanned section as well.
I was in the hospital for 5 days 4 nights. My OB gave me the option of leaving after 3 nights, but I opted to stay the extra night and have my staples taken out before I left - otherwise I would have had to make a trip to her office with DH since I was told not to drive for atleast 2 weeks.
The pain was not that bad. They kept me in bed the day after I delivered with the pressure cuffs on my legs to prevent clots. The day after that I was up, showered and dressed - feeling like myself (with make-up )
My biggest piece of advice - if you have a section, don't let the gas build up. It is definitely uncomfortable to move around at first, but if you don't you will have gas pains. I tried to roll from one side to the other every time I woke up at night (I would take an extra hit of pain med, wait a few seconds and flip) and I had absolutely no gas issues at all.
Don't worry - it will be fine - and as an added bonus, your baby won't have a pointy head!

Dr. Bergman is actually part of my OBGYN group and I love him! He did not do my actual C-Section (Dr. Prince did, and he did a great job) but he did perform an amnio the day before (long story, but I had low amniotic fluid and they wanted to make sure DS's lungs were developed). If he is performing your C-Section, you are in good hands!
Regarding the actual surgery, I was in pain afterward and it did take me awhile before I felt like myself again. The pain meds definitely helped, but it was a lot of trial and error to find one that helped with the pain but didn't make me too loopy to the point where I couldn't function! I also was eventually given Darvocet as a pain killer and delivered at NSUH. The staff helped me a great deal.
When I got home from the hospital, I had a baby nurse and she helped tremendously. Everyday the pain got a little bit better but it did take some time. I had to keep reminding myself that it was major surgery and it would take some time to heal. Just remember that everyone's body heals differently. Most of my friends who had C-Sections were on thier feet in no time and felt better right away.

Re: C-Section questions...
Posted by karacg How long until you were on your feet? Later that day.....about 12 - 14 hours later Did you need a lot of help at home? For 2 days I did. It took a while to get used to my own bed after being in the hospital bed. Did you insurance cover any kind of home health services, and did you need them? not sure, but I did not need them Anything else -- thanks!
The only thing I needed extra help with in the beginning was BFing, b/c the baby was lying right above my incision & it was getting irritated. The nurses helped me to put the baby in position to BF without him touching my incision.
FYI....I also did not take a lot of meds at the hospital. I only took Motrin & that was mos;ly for my back & legs from sitting so uncomfortably in the friggin chairs
They did offer me motrin, perkaset (sp?), and Darvuset (sp)....and ambient to sleep.
Also, try to walk around asap, so that you can pass gas. The hospital would not let me eat anything other than a clear liquid diet until I passed gas....

Re: C-Section questions...
The entire experience was no where near as bad as I thought it would be. I was so scared and worked myself up the entire day. My main concern was the Epidural which did not hurt at all and recovery was not bad either.

Re: C-Section questions...
I had a c-section and even though my experience of the actual section was rough- I thought the recovery was very easy and I will have no problem if i have another child doing it again.
to answer your questions: How long until you were on your feet? I was on my feet the next day- the quicker you walk around, the fast you'll heal- it did help that my DD was in the NICU which was downstairs and I wasn't offered a wheelchair down- so as soon as I was unhooked from everything, I was down there.
Did you need a lot of help at home? nope.. it was a little rough getting up from bed to get the baby- but after a few times, it was doable...
Did you insurance cover any kind of home health services, and did you need them? not that I know of- I didn't inquire- and no, I didn't need it.

How long until you were on your feet? Either that evening or the next day
Did you need a lot of help at home? I only had DH but it would have been nice to have a 3rd person (my family wasn't that much of a help unfortunately ) Did you insurance cover any kind of home health services, and did you need them? No, I don't know if any would for a c-section. I have great insurance and nothing like that was covered.
I was not able to lift anything (even baby) for about a week and didn't start driving for about 10 days or so. But everyone is different, there are people that bounce back better and don't bounce back quickly.
