Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
Posted by mommyonli
i had a repeat, but then again my 1st C section was elective..
same here I am having a repeat because my 1st was elective. 2 doctors asked me if I wanted to go VBAC they seem to be all for it, but I would rather go w/ c section anyway

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I will most likely have a repeat when the time comes.
I briefly spoke to my dr about it (she is not the one who did my c/s) and she said based solely on what I told her was my reason for my c/s I didnt sound like a good candidate but when I was ready to TTC we could discuss it more if I wanted to.
I am not a good candidate because DS #1 was 9lbs 14oz, and I didnt progress at all on my own. I had DS on my EDD by schedule c/s and i still wasnt contracting or dilating at all.
Honestly I am not interested in a VBAC because I had such a smooth c/s I dont want to take the risk even if its 1% the risks are too great for me

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
My doctor was totally for and a huge believer in a VBAC. Unfortunately for me around 36 weeks it became very obvious that DS was not going to move into position, which is the same problem I had with DD. We monitored it until a couple of days before my due date and he did not move. So my doctor felt that since I had the same problem with DD that it was best to go with a repeat C. After he was born she said to me it was a good thing we did because he was so high up that it with out a doubt would have been an emergency C-Section if we opted to try the VBAC.
All that being said, I would leave a dr that told me from the beginning that a VBAC was not an option unless there was a real medical condition for it.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
Im going for a VBAC next month but Im not opposed to having a repeat if it comes down to it. I will be scheduled for a c/s at 39.5 weeks but if I go into labor before then, I will try to labor.

I had a repeat c/s b/c DD was transverse breech. Had she been head down I would have been able to try for a VBAC.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
thanks everyone for your stories. I am going to call the doctor I had originally seen and speak to him. As I stated earlier, I am not against a repeat C Section if medically neccessary - but I would like the option of going natural. I know many people do not feel or understand the way that I feel (not just on here, in real life too) regarding this but I want that choice or want to know what my options are before they are taken away.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
For a while I considered it, and my practice was really pushing for me to try, oddly enough. But, while I was PG, I learned that my cousin tried a VBAC and her uterus ruptured and she and the baby almost died, and she can't have any more children, and I also learned of an aquaintance, a pediatrician, who attempted a VBAC and her uterus ruptered as well and she lost her baby That was more than enough to convince me otherwise. I just feel like the risk, albeit small, is not worth taking to experience a natural birth - for me the most important thing is a safe delivery so I can be present and in the moment for both my children

and that's where my guilt for feeling like this lies I feel like I will never be satisfied if I repeat without considering VBAC and feel like I am selfish for even considering it ....

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had a c-section b/c my baby was breech. When the time comes, I would like the option of a VBAC too. My doctor, like yours, already told me I will 100% be a repeat c-section, just b/c I had one previously. I was really surprised and put off by that. I am going to seek another opinion, perhaps with the midwives at SB.
I totally get what you are saying about feeling bad either way though. I really don't want another c-section, it was so painful, I had such a long recovery and I still have numbness. I really want to experience a natural delivery. On the other hand, I understand there are risks, though small, with the VBAC.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I wanted to VBAC. I discussed it with my docs. They told me that they don't recommend it but that if I insisted, they would have to sit and hold my hand through it. When DH heard the risks involved, he said no way. We had a terrible time conceiving DD#2 and he just felt it wasn't worth the risk -- to either of us.
ETA: I had the first C b/c my water broke and true labor never started -- 24 hours later, DD's heart rate dropped and they needed to get her out -- I had almost no fluid left. I went into labor with DD#2 3 weeks early (minor contractions and water broke) and I was very tempted to tell the covering doc that I wanted to try for the VBAC but then I got scared so went with the repeat-C.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
DS will be 18 months old when DD is due in March. Because DS was an elective c-section (due to his size, they thought he was going to be 10 lbs and he was under 8 lbs ) my OB and two midwives have told me that I am a great candidate for a VBAC.
I have discussed it with my current OB. He has no stipulations other than that I have to have a growth sono at 36 weeks to make sure she is head down and not too big, and I cannot be induced. He is willing to let me go past my due date as long as I am monitored often. I am also open to the idea of another c-section if necessary.
From what I have read (and I have read a LOT) the chance of uterine rupture is very slim and in most cases is not even life-threatening if caught early in labor. I am confident in my decision, as is my DH, and I hope I can do it.
My advice is to find an OB or midwife you are comfortable with. Even if that means no VBAC for you, you still need to feel like you have a voice! This is, after all, your body, and your doctor should be willing to listen to everything you have to say.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I moved from the city to LI so I had to find a new OB. I specifically looked for one that was open to VBAC. After reading extensively on the subject, there is no reason why I could not have a VBAC and wanted a Dr who would support that (and he does). My sister also had a successful VBAC.
There is no way I would choose to have c-section surgery again. If it is medically necessary, than fine I will do it for my baby. C-section recovery sucked and now I have a 2yr old. I need to be able to take care of my 2 little ones.
If VBAC is an option you want, than I would find out if other Dr's in your practice are open to it or find another practice

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had a repeat. My first pregnancy was rough, so I did not want to take a chance, even the small percent chance of an issue was enough. And good think I did because after I delivered DD, my OB told me my uterus had thinned so much that I could have easily ruptured and probably would have if I went vaginally. I also have 2 children close in age (15 months), so that could have been why.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had an emergency C with my 1st DS, and was told I was not a good candidate for a VBAC - same as others have posted - too soon btw births, reason for the 1st C (he was stuck), etc. I was scheduled 8 days before my DD and went into labor 3 days prior to that. There was another Dr from the practice at the hospital and after explaining the risks, let me try for a VBAC as I was so far along. They had a team in the room in case I still needed a C. Well, it worked and I had a successful VBAC! And the recovery was much, much easier that my 1st C. I was told it was not common, though. I think you really do need to have a supportive practice, and hospital, if you are considering this. FM if you have questions!

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
My Dr. has told me that she WILL NOT attempt a VBAC. But that mostly has to do with a prior back surgery and the fact that she doesn't want me going into labor and pushing.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I just got back from seeing my OB today and we discussed just this! She said that VBACs are common in her practice (she is in nyc) and that they were extremely popular in the 90s, but have slowed down a bit now - probably b/c drs are very scared of lawsuits. I am hoping to have a VBAC, but if i can't, then I will have repeat c-section. I have a couple of family members that are ob/gyns and they are very supportive of VBACS. My uncle said if I lived in Iowa, he wouldn't do it, but being that i am delivering in a major NYC hospital and they do alot, i am comfortable with "trying" to have a VBAC.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
Due to insurance and legal risks (lawsuits) some OBs are refusing to allow VBACS- something I find highly offensive to women. We are not dumb. We can make good, sound decisions for ourselves. C-sections have real risks. Some people act like you are just getting a cavity filled at the dentist. VBACs have risks as well, but again, you are an adult who can review all sides and figure out what is best for you. Find a doctor who will support your RIGHT to VBAC. Honestly, I was sadly disappointed to learn my OB/GYN who I really trust said the whole practice has forbidden VBAC for any reason. I was shocked and disgusted at the same time. I will have to find a new OB/GYN because I cannot support a practice that takes the right away from women.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had a VBAC. Since I was in the hospital for a month before Lilly was born, I had a lot of time to consult the high-risk Dr's about the risks. I was worried about uterine rupture...All of the Dr's had the same answer...the risk of rupture is less than 1%! My VBAC delivery went really well (granted, she was a preemie), and the recovery was much better than that of a C/S. Good Luck whatever you decide.
