CATCH program in city schools- Free Birth Controll and Plan B.
Its been on the news this week and I think its a GREAT initiative.
Basically girls in certain high schools in NYC can get the Plan B pill and birth control by going to the nurse.
I think its great. Maybe these girls cant afford birth control. Maybe they should keep their legs closed. Maybe their boyfriends are pressuring them into sex. Maybe they CANT go to their parents. Maybe they love the guy they are with and WANT to have sex. It makes no difference why they want it. I don't want these children having sex. But they are. For their own reasons. It will never stop.
And if this program keeps ONE girl from having a baby at 15/16/17, or prevents her from having to go through an abortion I think its worth it.
Keep these high risk GIRLS in school. They can get out from a bad situation if they can get an education.
The statistic I saw:
7,000 girls under age 17 got pregnant last year citywide
90% of those pregnancies were unplanned
64% were aborted
2,200 became moms by age 17. About 70 percent drop out of school.

Re: CATCH program in city schools- Free Birth Controll and Plan B.
I agree with this.
I think it's great policy.
Personally, I'm against abortion. I don't think teenagers should be having sex, but I know that they are. i think more educated and the more resources we can provide the better off all will be.
I don't FTR think birth control is a sin but honestly I think even if you think it's a sin it prevents the greater sin of abortion not to mention the physical and emotional toll it takes on these young girls.
I didn't have sex in high school. I had no risk of becoming a teen mom, but I made SO many stupid decisions at that point as all teens do, I'm well aware that ANY teen is just one lapsed judgement away from becoming a teen pregnancy statistic, especially with the pressure they might be getting from their boyfrined/girlfriend and peers.
I know the biggets opponents will be religious people, which is why I framed it in terms of that, but I honestly belive that to solve the bigger problem (teen girls having abortions or raising babies in bad situations), religious groups should get in bed with family planning orgs and work together to educate and prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Re: CATCH program in city schools- Free Birth Controll and Plan B.
A minor can get an abortion in NY without parental consent so I can't see why a morning after pill is a huge issue. My only concern is that their health is monitored.
Birth control pills still have side effects. My old co-worker had a stroke in her early 20s when her dr prescribed bc pills but didn't bother to monitor her or give her even a blood test.

I do not agree with this program. They are minors and should not be given free access to the morning after pill at school without their parent's consent.
They should learn to keep their legs closed or use condoms, which are also available in schools for free.

I agree with this. Not to mention, this seems like a HUGE liability if the student has an adverse reaction to the pills.

Re: CATCH program in city schools- Free Birth Controll and Plan B.
im torn.
i would want to know if my minor was taking a morning after pill BUT, there are some children who would be too afraid of their abusive parents to go to them for permission for the pill so in that case, I agree.
torn. i think it would depend on where the pill was being offered to minors without parental consent.

CATCH program in city schools- Free Birth Controll and Plan B.
I think there needs to be parental notification if a girl is given Plan B. I taught in city middle schools and often parents just had no idea what their kids were up to- sending nude pics of themselves, etc. You'd be surprised at how many pregnancies and how many kids are having sex in middle school- and their parents have no clue. More sex ed needs to happen too- it was disturbing how infrequent it was.

Unfortunately, a lot of these kids (and they are KIDS) are not taught this by their parents, who statistically were usually also teen parents.
I don't think this should be used as a form of birth control...but if a kid makes a mistake then I think taking the morning after pill is less dangerous than bringing an unwanted child into the world to an ill-equipped teen mother.

Re: CATCH program in city schools- Free Birth Controll and Plan B.
To my knowledge, parents are given "opt out" letters in the beginning of the school year. Parents do not have to allow their child access to these programs. The same letter restricts student access to military contact and condoms. If the student is over 18 and/or already a parent, parent's can't opt out though.
CATCH is only available in some places. These pills aren't handed out like Halloween candy; they are distributed by medical clinics (which are located within certain buildings).

I think we all agree they should use a condom, or keep their legs closed. But they aren't. I would much rather see at risk kids using Plan B as birth control than have a baby they cant raise, cant afford, and don't want

I think it IS a good idea. A PP said something about what happens if they cant go to an abusive parent? The reason they go to the nurse is because they CANT go to the parent, and don't want the parent to know.
I would rather see a girl get rid of an unwanted pregnancy by these means rather than an abortion. And get rid of an unwanted pregnancy that might have kept her from staying in school.

I have a 16 year old daughter and I personally don't want decisions about her made by my school district.
IMO it would make them more apt to have sex knowing there is a solution that their parents don't have to know about.

Decisions are not being made w/o your knowledge. If you don't want your daughter to be able to participate, fill out the Opt Out letter and make sure it's submitted to the office.

I think it's bold and brave and smart for at-risk kids in schools with historically high numbers of unwanted pregnancies. I'm pro-choice ALL THE WAY but even with legalized abortion and free condoms too many girls get pregnant every year and end up marginalized.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to have an "opt in" letter? Otherwise the default is they are allowed to get these drugs. Negative consent doesn't seem like a good idea in this case. What if the student doesn't take the form home and the parent is unaware of the program?

Obviously, YOU think it's a good idea, you stated as much in your original post. I do not.
I think that children, and they are children, should not have the ablitity to make a decision like that without their parent's knowledge. A child under 18 can't get a tattoo in this state but ending a pregnancy is fine. It's absurd. And I agree with the previous poster who said it should be an opt in rather than opt out. If a parent would be fine with their daughter having access to this, they'll opt in, and probably be grateful they won't potential have a grandchild to raise.

In a perfect world, an abstinence only program would work. However, as Bristol Palin has so aptly demonstrated - it doesn't. Children need appropriate sex education. Children need to learn about STDs, AIDS, saying no, and how to say yes safely. They also need to learn what to do when the condom breaks, or they had too much to drink and didn't exercise appropriate caution.
Unfortunately, the reason big bad government keeps stepping in is because there are too many parents that are failing at their job to teach their children what they need to know. There are also a tremendous number of parents who are running around thinking "not my kid" when in fact their kid is drinking, and smoking and having sex and doing all the things the parent thinks they're not doing. As a result of this delusion they think their children don't need to be educated. Then there are those who think kids don't need to know until they're 15, or 16 or whatever, when in fact the kid needed to know at 9 or 10 or 11.
A few weeks ago (on the parenting board I think) someone posted an excerpt from a sex ed textbook that was downright frightening (and false). If that's what qualifies for education these days, it's no wonder the USA is lagging behind other countries.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for sex education. Whether it comes from the schools or the parents, all kids need to be educated and be given good and correct information.

This is why I agree it turns into a pattern. I do agree with nrthshre though bc I can't take birth control for the health risks. Ps I wouldn't want my own child to have access though

Out of curiosity from a healthcare POV, I'm wondering what blood test you're saying they should have given your coworker. I don't believe it's standard practice to give a blood test before giving birth control is why I'm asking (although the ones that potentially elevate potassium would be an exception to this).

But teens already have access to abortions without parental consent, which is a much more invasive medical procedure. What if the schools teamed up with Planned Parenthood and were giving out the birth control under the supervision of a doctor, PA or NP (as I would hope would be the case)?

An "opt in" letter is extremely unrealistic. The girls that would benefit from this are those with parents who barely "opt in" to their lives let alone give them sex education.

Adverse reactions to this honestly make me laugh.
Yes, they should keep their legs closed or use condoms. But it's not going to happen!
It makes me laugh that these kids can literally get pot, cigarettes, alcohol, and even heroin at school without their parents' consent (obviously), but birth control?!?!?!? That's a big no no?
If this can prevent a dozen abortions, its a success in my eyes.

Yes, they should keep their legs crossed but statistics say they won't. I don't know how I feel about the morning after pill, but I feel strongly that they should be allowed to obtain birth control. I would hope that since the nurse is administrating this the girls will be monitored.
I wonder if they will be given the pill or the shot type of bc (not sure what it is called).
