Re: Check your statements - Credit Card scanners and data breached at Target Retail Stores

I work for a credit union and our morning has been NUTS with this. Here are some steps to take:

#1. Check your account. Most *likely* you will not be hit for any fraudulent charges. People who steal card numbers usually hold off on charging anything on them until all the buzz has died down. They'll probably wait until Jan/Feb. If you used your card in Target, have your card blocked and re-issued now. Don't wait until fraud has occurred.

#2. Call your bank and let them know that your card was used! Visa (MasterCard, etc.) is still getting all of the reports together. It might take up to a week for them to get all the card numbers that were affected.. and then they'll release additional card numbers every week or so for a month.

Yeah, I was one of them! Someone purchased $3k on my credit card, so I had to put a fraud alert and cancel my credit card with my bank! Just what I want this holiday season to be without a credit card!!

ETA: Target has stated this AM that it affects 40 million people.

In my case, the scammers raked up 6-purchases of $500 each on my credit card.

They used your Red Card or just a regular credit card? Just wondering how they would know it's due to this breach and not a skimmer, atm fraud, etc. somewhere else.

Sorry it took me so long to see this.

I used my regular bank MasterCard. My bank contacted me asking if the purchases were legit b/c they know my spending history and we said no and they started the shut down process on the credit card I used.

Oh okay, so it really could have been from using it anywhere then, not just Target. Gas stations, restaurants, etc. People even put skimmers on the ATM machines and steal all of your info when you use one. Not saying it wasn't Target, but just that it can be from anywhere. So even if you don't shop at Target, people should still keep an eye on their statements or check their accounts online regularly.
