CIO for early risers?
We were very successful doing CIO with DC for night wakings and going to bed. They have been going to bed at 7pm for months now (they are 9 months). Problem: they wake up at 5 am. Every morning. I have tried keeping them up later, they still get up at 5. I leave them in their cribs talking, etc. until 5:30 which is when they start freaking out to eat.
I honestly don't mind getting up early, I am so used to it now (obviously so are they). But I was just thinking about daylight savings time. And we are having other people watch them in two weeks when we go to a wedding. I feel like I need to try to break this now, right? So how? Do I CIO until like 6 am? Eventually will they just start sleeping through to 6?

Re: CIO for early risers?
in my experience it doesn't work, I've tried a bunch of times.
I have early risers. It's in my blood. My grandmother woke for the day at 5 am. My dad and Aunt do the same (it skipped over me but my boys are super early risers)
I am always so freaked out about daylight savings time but somehow it always works out and they don't wake up before 5.
Hopefully you will more luck with it.

I could have written this except I have a DD and you can add in that my DH is an early riser too.
I get excited when I get to sleep until 7am.

Re: CIO for early risers?
We've been trying but, it doesn't seem to work - unless we bring DS into bed with us.
He's too awake to CIO at that hour - if he's still tired though, he'll sleep for an hour or so in our bed (he wakes up at 4-4:30 though and I just can't get up that early!)

Re: CIO for early risers?
Honestly I would never do CIO for an early riser (I'm not a CIO supporter in general) To me it's almost like forcing them to sleep more than they need to /want to in the morning , KWIM? My DD has been an early riser since the day she was born. She used to wake up between 4- and 5 am every single morning for about 2.5 yrs , at 2.5 she started sleeping a bit later 6:30-7 and that's her wake up time now , she is 3. But I never even thought of doing a CIO. I just feel like she wakes up when she wakes up and that's it no reason to let her cry and try to make her go back to sleep. I do know someone who tried the morning CIO and it didn't work for them. But I guess if you feel like this is what you need to do, try and see what happens, good luck

Re: CIO for early risers?
what about if you give them a bottle then put them back down in the cribs? maybe that would buy you some more time in the morning?

Re: CIO for early risers?
If they are waking to eat, you may want to stretch that time, a little every day. Its what I did with DS, he wakes 5am but gives me usually till about 6:30am, before he starts whining. That was when he was a perfect sleeper, now I have no clue what to expect, you already know my issues.
There are a few ways to do this, you can do it by extending the time by 5-10 min every day, or to give a little less and less at 5:30am until you give nothing. But makes sure you give them plenty at the time you want them to wake.
DS is happy playing in his crib until I get him most days. If he's teething its a bit hit or miss, he might start whining right away, but nothing terrible.

Re: CIO for early risers?
I will say that when Tyler (10 mnths) gets up at 5 or 5:30 I give him a bottle and put him back in the crib. He will almost always go back to sleep for a catnap.
Jack really never went back to sleep once he was up for the day so I brought him in bed with us, gave him milk, and let him watch TV while we slept. I still do this.

Re: CIO for early risers?
Honestly at that age I think they should be getting about 14-15 hrs of sleep between naps and sleep-so 10 hrs is probably not enough. Double check my #'s you can google a chart
From the time my kids were very little(on formula/BM still) if they woke before 7 I gave them a bottle and put them back to bed. I fed them in their room. To this day with a few flukes here and there(sickness, teething etc.) they go to bed around 7 and sleep until 8 or so then hang in their cribs until 8:45-9. They take one nap for about 1/5-2 hrs around 12. HTH
