Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

Hey, Everyone! I should be joining this board in a month Chat Icon. I am a first-timer, so please bare with my question!

I just had my shower this past weekend. Though we received a lot of clothes, they all start at least at 3-6 months; everyone figured since my DH and I are tall (I'm 5'11" and was 20 inches at birth, DH is 6'3" and was 23 inches at birth--all of our siblings were around 23 inches at birth), we didn't need newborn or 0-3 month stuff. So now I have to go shopping for onesies, PJs, and outfits for the newborn/0-3 month range, but I am CLUELESS on what to get! Here is my thought-process:

Should I get mostly onesies and PJs?
Should I even bother getting newborn-sized clothes, or should I stick to 0-3 months?
How much should I even get?

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

I would get a few newborn sized things - pajamas and onsies...maybe an outfit. My daughter was in Newborn for about a month, so we definitely needed it....but you just never know!
Worst case scenario....if the baby comes and is tiny....you can always buy more clothes. But it would be good to have some on hand from the start.

I agree. My son was almost 8 lbs but was in newborn for a couple of weeks. I would get a few pairs of footie pajamas with zippers (so much easier in the middle of the night!) maybe a few of the Carters sleep and plays, and one or two packages of the onesies in newborn.

I would get a few newborn onesies - you can always use 0-3 month stuff over the ones and maybe 2 sets of pajamas.

Loey was only in newborn for a week or two I think, then went to 0-3.

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

same thing happened to me. My dd was estimated to be about 9 pounds so i assumed she didnt need any newborn clothing so we only had 0-3 months.

She was born 8lbs 10 oz and was 21 inches long. The 0-3 month clothing was HUGE on her. She needed newborn so i had to go out and buy a bunch of NB PJs. I wouldnt buy any clothes- just PJs and onsies for the first month. All the regular clothing i got went to waste.

My DD is now 2.5 months and fits into 3-6 month clothing. She is super long. But she lives in PJs and so do i these days :)

Good luck with labor :)

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

DD was born 9.9lbs so we used newborn for the first week and grew out of it already...after that she went to 0-3 Pjs and 3mos Onsies... Definitely do not stock up on NB clothes.

Get PJs with the zipper sooo much easier then those annoying snaps!

I agree with everyone else. I kind of think that no matter how big your kid is, when it's a newborn, they need the newborn size; they just haven't filled out yet. I would get a couple of packages of onesies and 3-4 sets of stretchies/pj's in newborn & 0-3. Then see what you need from there.

I'd avoid the newborn stuff. Ds was born a month early at 7lb 6oz and went straight into 0-3 month stuff which he was only in for 2 months.

Get sleepers. If you head to Old Navy & Gyboree outlet they are clearing the winter stuff now which should last you til May.

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

agreed. I would just get a few pairs of PJs honestly. DD wore newborn size for about 3 or 4 weeks....so I ended up having DH run out and get her a few more outfits, but she was basically in Pjs and onesies all the time.

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

Im going to be the different one here. Dd was born at 7.0 lbs and was in newborn clothes for 6 weeks. I hated leaving her in pjs all day so I got cute outfits.as well. She was about 10 lbs when I put her into 0-3 mons and it was still large on her.

Same here!

DS is just about 5 weeks and NB clothes still fit him. They were big on him when he was born (8lbs, 5oz - 19.5 in) and he has just started to fill them out completely. He will prob grow out of the size within the next week or two. I'm also putting him in 0-3 months which are a tad big.

I would definitely buy 10 onesies or so, PJs and a few outfits. If you need more, you can always have someone run to the store to pick up some more for you.

Here too. DS went home in a 3-6 month outfit, and was large (22.5"), so we didn't need NB sizes. I would get a few pairs of 3-6 month PJs.

ITA. DS was 8 lbs 1 oz at birth, but on the shorter side. He wore newborn clothes for 5 weeks.

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

if i were you i would just buy 2 packs of Gerber Sleep N' Play Zip Front 3pk and they are the best !!! zipper so easy and feet are covered. you can assess the size after that no reason to go out and spend money on something u dont know you are going to need my ds was really never in newborn he was born 9lb 10oz

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

Dont stock up too much. Get some onesies and pjs and a few outfits but you need to see how much your DC weighs at birth and go from there. Best of luck!!

My DD was 9lb5oz and 21.25inches long and wore newborn clothes for 6weeks. We didn't have any newborn clothes in the house and had to run out and get some. That did help with us just buying the basics- onesies, pants & pjs.

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

I got soooo many outfits when people came to see the baby and since at that point they knew it was a boy (we were team green) and that he was a little bigger- they gave us most of what we needed

I would just buy a very small amount of onesies and pjs- maybe 3-4 of each in newborn and 0-3

Don't get newborn clothes. if you need them you can get them when the baby is born, or keep the tags and receipts so you can return them.

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

i wouldn't buy any NB stuff. my dd wore 0-3 months home from the hospital and she was only 21 inches and 8lbs 12oz. yes it was a little big but by the time she was 1 week she fit into it perfectly. i would definitely 0-3 months stuff. mostly PJ's since you probably won't be going out much in this weather. maybe one or 2 outfits but like i said mostly pj's. good luck and congrats!

Re: Crashing: Newborn Clothes Question

yes when ds was born, i only had 0-3, 3-6 and up and he only fit in nb for like 2 months!!!! he was 7.4 but for some reason, so skinny and nothing fit him. so my mom had to go out because i couldnt , and buy all nb clothes. but in the beginning, you only use onesies, and pjs really , so i would get mostly that. and keep tags on and wash as u need because this way you can return if you dont end up needing them.
