Given some of the information that is surfacing (in this thread and other news reports) it sounds like the whole family knew something was up. It's just a shame that they ALL let her drive away with 5 kids in tow.
exactly, these things prompted my suspicion and led me to say what I said.
you guys sound like you are talking more about a functioning alcoholic...this lady was FAR from functioning.
I was also thinking too, that she could have continued her blitzfest in the car...in front of those kids...again something I don't think someone in hiding would do.....it sounds like she was on some kind of a bender.
I can't imagine how I would feel getting off the phone with my sister...hearing the condition she was in, and knowing my kids were in the car with her. how helpless. how incredibly helpless must you feel.

I dont believe that the husband left at the same time as her at all. I think they had a fight..and he took off. The owner of the campground didnt say they left together, she said she said goodbye to her and the kids if I recall properly. Theres a reason she didnt call her husband..she called her brother, why not her husband? Pieces are still missing. I guess that part of it doesnt matter much? But maybe it does.

ITA with you. She was not an alcoholic "in hiding". I truly think both the dh and her brother KNEW how bad she was. WHY would the brother call the police? Seems odd to me. WHY would the husband let her leave with 5 kids? WHY did they not go together? Things are just not adding up. I wonder if the little boy will be able to talk about it and clear things up-??

ITA. Totally disgusted!

I just had a feeling it was going to be something like this I am so disgusted. She has wiped out an entire family and part of her own! What a horrible human being.
Her poor brother, I can't imagine what he must be feeling.
I always thought the family knew more than they were stating. The brother calling the police b/c his siister didn't feel well didn't seem right. My hearts go out to the Longo/Bastardi families - they mentioned that they were going to deal with this without animosity - i am sure that is going to change when they hear about these reports.

Maybe she didn't call her brother. The brohter talked to his daughter and she told him where they were. Maybe she was the one who called. I hope the kids didn't realize what was going on. If they did they must have been so scared. Its so sad, I can't stop thinking about it.

This is what makes me sick to my stomach. The oldest was 8 so if her aunt was driving erratically then she had to know something was wrong. Also the news stated all the kids where thrown from the car...why wasn't the 2 year old in a carseat? Why weren't the 5 year olds in booster seats?
Those last minutes for the children must have been awful

I think in a horrific crash like that, carseats and boosters just dont matter. That crash site was unbelievable.

While I understand how in a crash like that a carseat wouldn't matter; it still goes to her state of mind as to why her 2 year old wasn't in a carseat.

Everyone that saw her said she was driving like a lunatic. If her DH was driving in his car near her, how come he didn't see this?
Something doesn't make sense
In the newspaper, it said she stopped at a McDonald's in Liberty. Which is 10 miles from the campground. If he continued on when she stopped. He didn't follow her very far. I know the area well since my family has property in Parksville (where the campground was). People were reporting her driving down 17 erratically which would have happened after McDonald's.

I am so ANGRY over this...SO ANGRY! If I was the mother of the 3 little girls I would be on a war path right now! OMG, how could she!!!!!!!!!!! I feel horrible for the families of the other victims because all the attention has been on Schuler and the kids. All the sympathy has been on Schuler...but that SOB was drunk and high! Diane took those men away from their families. Those families now have to live the rest of their lives knowing that THIS could of all been prevented!!!!!!!!!

I read that they are getting the surveillance footage of the Mcdonalds stop and that they did interview the employess but they said things were normal.

I read that they were thrown from the vehicle but I also read that the eye witnesses who stopped pulled the children from the car.
I also read that she called her husband but he was unreachable and they were to investigate that after the funerals.

Re: Cross post - Toxicology reports for the Taconic Crash in
There are a whole lot of unknowns being taken into account right now and sadly, I think there will be a lot more to come. So far, the news media has said they found THC in her blood but not a timeline of how long it had been in her system. A habitual user can have it in their system for up to 45 days. Obviously, this would not be the same for the alcohol.
I read (maybe Newsday?) that the McDonald's people weren't making any statements yet. Makes me wonder what will come out of that, and other eyewitness accounts of her driving. Plus the fact that her phone was found at the rest area.
It's a tragedy and extremely sad. But it's not over yet, there a ton of unanswered questions.

Her husband I feel nothing for. I highly doubt she was smoking and boozing on her own.
that's not fair... I have a relative whose husband was an alcoholic and drug user for years... She's a wonderful person and sometimes you just can't make someone get cleaned...
(luckily he did eventually) but it's NOT fair to pass judgment on her spouse because of her mistakes and problems..
