Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
can i butt in here since i am a director at a camp?
during the year i run a department but over the summer i am instrumental at camp. this year SO many parents were asking us supervisors how much to tip the counselors. so, in an effort to make things fair and to make sure that ALL parents were getting the SAME information, a "suggested" tip guideline was emailed out.
it is merely a suggestion and if you can't tip, then a simple thank you card would suffice. no one expects a tip, but it is always graciously appreciated.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!
Its only a suggestion, why is everyone getting so upset? churches do the same thing only tell you how much to donate.
remember the camp may be expensive but you are paying for what they are providing like the facility and the activities for your children.
the counselors are the ones spending ALL the time with your children and there are many counselors b/c as moms with more than 1 you know it is very hard to manage more than 2 AND its better to have many counselors to one group so that your child gets all that is provided and what you paid for.
again just a suggestion its not tacky/wacky or rude. heck some restaurants add on gratuities to your bill without your asking!!!
as for the teachers regarding no pay in the summer- that I find odd. I have teachers in the family and we talk, they get paid a YEARLY salary that includes the summer months. they get a paycheck every month even the summer months. so Im not sure what that post was about and they work on long island and a few in manhattan. they work the summer for extra pay but not to rely on.

I still can't get over the fact that camp costs 5,000 bucks!
I live in westchester and my DD camp was a little less. it actually only comes out to la little more than $150 a day and for my sanity it is totally worth it and she loves it
as for tipping we do not get letters home i gave what i could give to her 4 main counselors...
Wow. I guess I should thank my lucky stars as I paid $107.50/WEEK each child. 8 weeks cost me $1,720 for both kids.
i guess you should... I could have chosen cheaper routes but my son loves this camp and has had a great experience with it... It was important for me to send him there.
depends on the kid... etc etc.
Actually is all depends on my budget-- I could NEVER afford $5,000 per child for 8 weeks of summer camp. This is a good price for us, the kids are safe and happy there :)

oh yea and thats cheap!!! pierce is around 6-7k robinhood the same
for 8 weeks too. we didnt this year b/c for one they have to be potty trained and I feel 2 is too young anyway to spend that kind of money.
but from what I hear they are great.
we are budgeting when our DD's are old enough to really enjoy it to try pierce.

I agree with all of your points except the teachers. Teachers do not get paid a yearly salary. They get paid for 180+ days of school and any professional development days they have to attend. If they get a paycheck over the summer, it's b/c they chose or their employer chose to spread out the paychecks over the entire year. If they don't get a paycheck over the summer, they just get more money each paycheck during the school year. The salary is still the same though and it's based on 180+ days of work.

So say you make $50,000 for 180 days, wouldn't you budget that for 12 months so you would have money to pay bills over the summer if you were not working?

I not sure I understand what point you're trying to make, but yes, a person who know he or she will not get paid for a certain period of time should budget accordingly.
