So you were in your 20's getting paid $125/week? Can I ask WHY you would take a job at that age for such a LOW amount?

Wow, this is the first post I've started that has gotten so heated.

Thank you everyone for your input. I'll be giving the recommended amounts, but stick to the minimum except for the counselors that my daughter has told me stories about throughout the summer. (Especially the one who I'm thinking of recruiting to be a babysitter!!!)

I'm not against tipping or gifts I'm just appalled that the camp gives you a tipping guide. I think families should 1) Give what they are inclined to give based on the service they felt they got from various individuals and 2) what they can afford.
Families shouldn't be made to feel bad if they can't shell out another $300 for tips.

The camp my kids attend suggest $10 per week that your child attended. So for 8 wks - $80 then they will add all the tips and split between counselors in that age group.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

For those of you who think that the camps should just pay the counselors more money, they can't! I don't know if you think that the camp owners are "rolling in it" or not, but I can assure you that most of the profits go back into the camp. Do you have any idea of what the cost of insurance is to run a camp?! The only way to pay the counselors more would be to charge you a lot more, and we know that the price for camp is already outrageous.

Anyway, back to the issue of tipping, I think tipping your child's counselor is a very nice gesture at the end of the summer considering they were the ones watching your most precious gift in the world! They were the ones making sure your child had on sunscreen each day, and ate a good lunch, and helped them change for swim. Do I think that tipping in general has gotten out of hand? YES, but that doesn't mean I am going to stiff my child's camp counselor!

That's absolutely standard. Counselors make their money for the summer off of tips. What they earn other than that works out to be close to $2 an hour. Trust me, I worked in camps for many, many, many, many years, and I currently know other teachers working in camps. They depend on that money AND appreciate it!Chat Icon

ITA, also it's just a guideline, no one is telling you to tip them that exact amt, you do what you are comfortable with, BUT, I do agree, working as a counselor when I was a teen, we got paid close to nothing and relied on tips heavily

ITA, ummmmm maybe she was still in college trying to just make extra cash, or make extra cash over the summer if she had a seasonal job, not every one can be making a six figure salary in their 20's...apparantly if it were that easy, we would all be tipping our counserlors thousands of dollars....

If you do a search, I posted something similar last summer... It was the first time I put my son in a full summer LI camp (on the expensive side).

It generated the same responses, but I have to say... It helped me understand why (IMO) tipping is so important....

Though- remember... it is JUST a suggestion... I'm sure for every person who just cannot fit it in their budget to tip, there is ANOTHER family that is well off and tips generously.

I just couldn't afford the suggested tip, so I sent what I could and wrote a note to the counselor that I *did* appreciate all the hard work they did and apologized that it wasn't much etc etc.

(this is because there were SO MANY counselors working with my son on a daily basis, (he had TWO swim instructors!!) the one I was more generous towards was the one who was with him MOST)

Also, because it was a more expensive (hoity toity) camp, I'm sure it's expected.

here is the older thread

Staying out of the BS...

Tip what you are comfortable with. I dont think you have to worry about why or how others are going to survive in life. They take on the job...if they dont like what you or anyone else tips them they can move on...such is life.
I agree its steep but I am not there yet. I also would tip more to those more involved with my child not just whats on a piece of paper.

Sorry but that's ridiculous!! It's a camp. The counselors get paid an hourly wage which I am sure is more than that of a waitress. For the camp to suggest tips is so unprofessional IMO. If the parents feel they got great service then it should be their prerogative. I would not appreciate getting a recommend tip schedule.

This is very typical for Long Island camps. Trust me for everyone that I know who lives out of state says the same thing that you do.

to tell you the truth-- it is worth every penny to me because my son had the summer of his life.He had a fantastic summer and is a completely different child for the better...

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

wow..i never got tips like that as a counserlor..and i did get pretty good ones. i think with the cost of camp thats asking a bit much.

you give what you can.

ETA: i worked at day camp in brooklyn when i was 18-19 yrs old. I think i made like $100 bucks a week. For a teenager back in the late 1990's that wasn't so bad..it was spending $$. I also babysat during the week and had cash from that too.

counselors get paid crap..so i appreciated every tip i got at the end of summer. it was a nice bonus no matter how big or small.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

Tipping for day camp is expensive. I too was a counselor for many years. More often than not, I received no tips at all. When I did recieve a tip I was beyond thrill. As a CIT, I made nothing. As a counselor at an overnight camp (where the min. age for a counselor was 17) I worked from 7am to 10pm and got a one hour break. I got about $2 an hour. There were plenty of parents who could not afford to tip, but just $10 made my day. $10 meant I could go out one night and have a slice a pizza and perhaps a beer. Tip what you can, not what is suggested. Counselors really appreciate your gesture.

On LI, YES, people expect it. My mom lives out of state and she said no one tips for the things LIers do (she used to live here).

The cost of living here is much higher though.

So are the salaries.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

This is our first year at summer dau camp too, and we were a little surprised about the "tipping chart", I think at first b/c of how much we paid for the summer. But it is only a "suggested" amount, so we are just giving what we are comfortable wth.

Back in the 80's, I worked at AHRC and we never got a tip, made crap money too. I never had even thought about it. But it is what it is, so like I said we will give what we can

It is no one's intention to insult (at least I am speaking for myself). I just don't understand how someone could complain they are working for only $125/week in the summer and then say they rely on the tips. Most jobs do not get tips and don't get 10 + weeks off a year also.
I think alot of the tipping expected on LI is because people also are alot less frugal than in other places. I know in FL they pack your bags in the supermarket and you are NOT allowed to tip. They would never EXPECT the tip either.
We are very spoiled on LI, IMO as you would never see tip "jars" at donut shops, dry cleaners, etc. in other states.

I agree with what you are saying. I cant believe all the tip jars out there. If you dont want to own a franchise etc... change your line of work. Dont expect to be paid for doing your job. It is nice of people to want to tip you, to expect it...no way. My dc I WOULD tip and thats just my own preference (not 300 bucks but I would) BUT its also MY choice not the schools to make for me or suggest to me.

ITA with you. You should NOT get something from a camp telling how much THEY think you should give. If and how much you choose to tip should be decided by you. I have never tipped camp counselors but have given Christmas gifts to my children's daycare teachers and elementary school teachers.
Where does the line of WHO you are supposed to tip in life end?
And again, tipping IS a NY thing. My mother lives in another state and can't BELIEVE who gets tips here (she did live in NY at one time but IMO and hers, it has gotten worse).

The thread is about camp counselors, not teachers or people who pack the bags in the supermarket. Since you bring it up though, teachers do not get paid for the summer. Their salary is based on working 10 months. People who pack grocery bags are paid a minimum wage. I assume many of them do not expect tips b/c they are paid at least the minimum wage and do not rely on tips as the main source of income.

From my experience, camp counselors do not make minimum wage or anywhere close to it. Like a waiter or waitress, they rely on the tips. Camps are not required to pay minimum wage b/c the tips supposedly make up for the very poor wages. I'm not really sure why camp counselors are being compared to jobs that pay the minimum wage.

Yes, they get paid 10 months out of the year. They are different than someone working all 12 months because they have to budget their money differently. That's all, IMO.
I am quite interested in finding out how much camp counselors actually make and the average age. My kids go to camp and they are all teenagers and I have NEVER been asked to tip.

People take the job because like other jobs that pay below minimum wage, they think that the tips will help to make up for it.
Like the PP said I don't understand how you can compare the cashier in the grocery store who is making at least min wage (probably more) to a camp counselor who makes WAY less than the minimum wage. I do not tip the cashier who packs my bags at the supermarket or target either. I do not understand the comparison.

I used to work at a portrait studio. Every once in awhile I got a tip. While it was great to get them, I NEVER expected a tip. I got paid an hourly wage to do that job, and that wage was above the minimum wage. But when I was a camp counselor, I was busting my azz all day to take care of other people's children for much less than minimum wage, and yes, I expected tips.

Sure, I started about 10 years ago and did it for 3 summers. I worked at two camps which were very expensive. I'll admit that was part of my expectation for tips - I knew I had kids living in mansions in Muttontown.
If I had worked for a town camp or something similar, I would not have expected the same amount in tips. I do not know if the town camps pay differently.
