Sorry but that's ridiculous!! It's a camp. The counselors get paid an hourly wage which I am sure is more than that of a waitress. For the camp to suggest tips is so unprofessional IMO. If the parents feel they got great service then it should be their prerogative. I would not appreciate getting a recommend tip schedule.

I agree!!

i also view it as totally unprofessional/tacky/whatever one wants to call it.

camp should then just jack up the prices and pay staff appropriately. this "tip" cr@p in the states is just getting waaaaaaay out of hand! Chat Icon

i live in jersey and wonder if we have that here Chat Icon i sent my 3 year old to a 2 week day camp and the thought NEVER occurred to me to tip Chat Icon

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

I'm sorry, but I find the idea of tipping camp counselors completely ridiculous!!! With the amount of money these camps charge, they should be paying their counselors a fair wage. If they didn't rely on tips at the end of the summer to pay the counselors, they may run the risk of losing them unless they pony up the amount to pay them properly. This is very similar to what wedding halls do with using the 18% 'gratuity" to pay their wait staff for the night -- it should be on top of their usual wage for the night. I'm sorry but if I paid $5000 for the summer there is no way I'd be doling out several hundred dollars at the end to essentially pay the counselors. In understand this may actually be hurting the counselors but the camp administrators are able to continue running the camp this way because the parents ARE giving the extra money at the end so they don't actually have to worry about paying the counselors a fair salary.

I do not agree. I was a counselor for a number of years at a couple of the camps mentioned in this thread. I was in my 20's when I worked there.
The first summer I worked, I got paid $1000. $1000 for 8 weeks, 8-4, no breaks. If you do the math, that works out to about $3/hr. THese counselors spend the entire day with your children it is NONSTOP. A waitress takes your order and serves you food for maybe an hour or two tops, and gets a 15-20% tip. A hairdresser works on you for an hour and gets a 20% tip. But the people responsible for taking care of your children all day do not deserve a tip? I do not understand the logic in this.

If I did not get tips then the summer would not have been worth working.

ETA: yes the camps are expensive, but they are not asking you to pay THEM more money, they are suggesting an amount to give the counselors. Also keep in mind it is a SUGGESTION. And really, if you have $5000 to spend on sending your kid to one of these camps, you don't have an extra $100 to give to the counselor? Sorry, I don't get it.

I agree and trust me, when I first saw *this* I felt the opposite... but as a lot of people told me on here and being a camp counselor when I was a teenager as well, these are young kids taking care of my son... They don't get paid a lot of money and I remember how it felt to receive a tip at the end of the summer. These kids work hard...I'm already spending a ton of $ for the camp, whats an extra hundred or two... This year, I worked it into my budget. It IS just a suggestion and I do my best to pay the amount they suggest, but I'm sure they don't get tipped by everyone.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

I just went through tipping last week at DD's camp. I sent in six, YES SIX, envelopes w/ cash in them for all the various "counselors" that the tip guide suggested.

After reading through this thread I have one question:

1 - How much $$ do camps outside of LI pay their counselors? I ready a few posts that stated that tipping is just a LI thing. Do counselors make more in other places rather than relying on tips?

My DD isn't in camp but I can tell you right now that outside of LI people do not tip the way people in LI do and it's not expected so I don't feel bad not doing it.

Re: Day camp tipping - wow, expensive!

That's absolutely standard. Counselors make their money for the summer off of tips. What they earn other than that works out to be close to $2 an hour. Trust me, I worked in camps for many, many, many, many years, and I currently know other teachers working in camps. They depend on that money AND appreciate it!Chat Icon

So you were in your 20's getting paid $125/week? Can I ask WHY you would take a job at that age for such a LOW amount?

By no means am I against tipping but for it to be expected is just plain rude.
I'm sorry if you take a job for crappy pay that's your problem. The camps should pay people taking care of children better and not rely on the parents to shell out more money unless they are inclined to do so of their own accord.

Tipping is just ridiculous on LI. Everyone expects a tip. No other place tips people like we do. They know that their pay is from their employer and they are just doing their job.
I personally couldn't even tell you the name of my kids' counselors and I could pass them on the street and not know who they are. They do not all stay the entire 8 weeks my kids are there as I know the head told the kids that they had new counselors for the last 2 weeks. These are kids who are working for the summer. They are not adults paying a mortgage or ones with kids of their own to support.

Exactly. I can't IMAGINE paying $5,000 (for only ONE child-I have 2!!) for 8 weeks and THEN expected to pay a couple of hundred more for tips.

ITA. Last year Kiera went to a camp that suggested tipping and it really turned me off. I had planned on tipping but then I felt like if I didn't tip their suggestion then it wasn't worth it to do. So I wound up not tipping. I'm sorry but the counselors do get paid. It is not the parents responsibility to make up for the poor pay they get. We pay enough on long island for camp and then we're supposed to shell out hundreds of dollars on tipping. No way. Tip what you feel comfortable tipping and do not go by their rude suggestion.

ETA: I do feel that counselors deserve to get tipped but my complaint is the "suggested" tip guide. To me that is totally unprofessional.

We can't afford those expensive camps. For years we sat overnight to get my dd in camp. Now it is a lotto and we got VERY lucky to get both kids in for all 8 weeks. We use our tax refund to pay for camp and I don't have an extra couple of hundred of dollars for tips. All the counselors are kids, IME and I am sure they are making good money (for their age).

I am not a counselor but I have many friends who are. Many teachers do not get paid throughout the summer and not everyone can get a summer school job. There are not many places that will hire you for 8 weeks. Also, I have a few friends whose children get a reduced rate at the camp they work at.

Why would their kids need to go to camp if they are off for the summer? Just asking as the camp my kids go to has mainly working parents kids there and that is who needs the camps the most.

I agree 100%. I was a counselor at Crestwood and the majority of the income was from tips. In the late 1980s I often got $75. As for why I did the job, I loved working with children and I loved working outside. I worked my butt off, though. There were many activities and I was helping 20+ kids in and out of their bathing suits at least twice a day, making sure they were dry, making sure they had sunscreen. Why not tip the people who take care of your kids while giving them fun summer memories? I was in college at the time, had good grades and there were other job options. I did what I loved and I deserved the tips I got. I had to wait all summer to get paid but then I went back to school with some money.

I was in college/grad school during the year. I could not get an 8 week job in the summer besides this. There were many other counselors who were working there for the same reason. So they were not 14 or 16 year old HS students, but 18+college students.
Many (including myself) were in school for teaching. So the kids were getting experienced, qualified counselors. However, if it were not for the tips, it wouldn't have been worth my time, and I would have not done it, and I am sure this is the case for many others who are in the situation I was in.
If it wasn't for the tips, I think you would be getting a lot less in the quality of counselors.

I understand that there are people who can't afford tips. However, it is the people who can but don't tip on principle who I do not understand. Because the camp office sent out a letter that the counselors had nothing to do with? I never saw one of these letters or even know if they went out. Why would you penalize the people who have cared for your children all summer because you thought a letter was rude? Call the camp office and complain, but don't stiff the counselor because of it.

Again I'll ask the question - why will you tip a waitress or a hairstylist or a furniture delivery guy but NOT the people who were with your kids all summer?

Even though most people's starting salary is more than you make, you don't know anyone's situation. I make a very good salary and still have to work summer school and even then ends don't always meet. I have student loans, credit card bills, mortgage payments, daycare, etc. YOU cannot say what someone else's situation is, unless you are in it.
Secondly, my friends who have their children in camps still want them to socialize, and keep a routine. Not everyone has an abundance of friends to have playdates with and if you have multiple age children, this is also difficult to do. Everyone's situation is different. I wasn't commenting on the aspect of tipping. I was just commenting on why you think someone would take that job.

I posted above, saying that I agree with you. I was a counselor also. I did see the suggested tipping guides. In fact, the camp gave that information to parents as they were signing up. I saw that when I went to visit the camp to sign some papers and they were giving tours for the upcoming summer. The suggested tips were not a surprise that the camp sprung upon the parents at the end of the summer.

I agree!!

So you were in your 20's getting paid $125/week? Can I ask WHY you would take a job at that age for such a LOW amount?

I am not a counselor but I have many friends who are. Many teachers do not get paid throughout the summer and not everyone can get a summer school job. There are not many places that will hire you for 8 weeks. Also, I have a few friends whose children get a reduced rate at the camp they work at.

I am not a teacher but I am well aware of how much teachers get paid and their starting salaries are more than I get paid for working an entire year with no summers off.
Why would their kids need to go to camp if they are off for the summer? Just asking as the camp my kids go to has mainly working parents kids there and that is who needs the camps the most.

No, I do not know anyone's situation but I do know that if teachers budget their money like any other job, would have a salary all year long including the summers. I know many like the extra money from teaching during the summer or taking on something extra but not sure why it would be expected that the pay would be very high, especially when working at a camp. Unfortunately camp counselors and daycare teachers do not get paid alot of money, even though they take care of precious children everyday.

Nobody expects it, but I do tip my day care provider a week salary at christmas time, and at the end of the school year. I also gave her half a week at the end of the summer!

ETS: I personally feel that anyone who spends that much time with my child DESERVES a little extra :)

On LI, YES, people expect it. My mom lives out of state and she said no one tips for the things LIers do (she used to live here).

The cost of living here is much higher though.

If it is the standard on Long Island and we know that Long Island camps pay their counselors in such a way that forces the counselors to rely on tips, why are we discussing what happens out of state? Besides, many New Yorkers send their kids to out of state sleepaway camps and it seems that tips are expected there as well, so I don't think it is true that tipping is not the norm in other places. When I send my child to camp, I will budget for tips and then tip based on the job that the counselors do. I know that I deserved the tips I got when I was a counselor. I hope that my child has counselors like the people I worked with.

wow. maybe she's taking care of her sick mother.

who are you to question someone about what type of summer job they take?

My FIL was a teacher (and single father) and took a job as a counselor WELL into his 40s simply b/c he could bring his kids to the summer camp as well.. You don't know people's situation. Its customary around here to tip, so what. I'm sure not everyone does it. For me, I would feel uncomfortable NOT doing it simply b/c the counselors do such a great job taking care of my son.
