Do I have to wait for the ped to give me the go-ahead to switch to milk?
So the twins had their 10 month check up and nothing was mentioned about switching to milk (and I forgot to ask). So Im assuming they will say to do it at their 1 yr. check up (they won't have an 11 month). But here's my problem.....they turn 1 on September 7. We're going on a trip for a few days to N.C, on the 9th and their appointment isn't until the 15th. I really don't want to have to lug so many jugs of formula with me if I don't have to. Would it be horrible to start switching them over around the end of August without the dr. giving me the ok? If I call and ask them over the phone are they going to make me come in for an appointment just for this?

They should answer you over the phone. I was giving DS a combo of BM and formula twrds the end and called cuz I was running low on both...the PA told me I could start transitioning DS a little early.

They should be able to answer that over the phone for sure.

At dd'd 9 month appt. I asked and my ped said 1 year. I went back and fourth as to transition her on my own but my dh kept saying wait for the dr. I went in at 12 months and they were surprised she was still on formula. So then I switched. I wish I switched earlier to get rid of the formula. I would switch starting at 11 months so you have 1 month to get them on milk. I am sure they will answer over the phone.

You can call them up. But I don't see any reason why they would tell you to wait- unless your DC's have any issues with allergies, milk, etc
At our 9 month she said we could start transitioning to milk when she turned 1- (we were a bit late on our appts so our 1 year would be a week or 2 after she turned 1) She said we could start a few weeks early and do a slow transition (milk/formula mix) or we could just do cold turkey.

Re: Do I have to wait for the ped to give me the go-ahead to switch to milk?
I started mixing milk and formula in his cups when he was eating his meals at 10m. My ped had a heart attack. The way that I saw it, he was eating like a champ, anything he could get into his mouth and he had no belly issues with the milk. She told me that he should only be on formula until a year old for the nutritional benefit. I disagreed due to his great eating habits. In the same sentence about 12m she said that if I ran out of formula at 11.5m I could give him milk. ***?? Why is the magic number 12m???? So...FYI I continued to do what I was doing and he was fully on milk in his cup at 10.5m and the formula was done with a few weeks ago. My son is happy, healthy and growing!
