Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
Since the Oil Spill, do you avoid going to BP Gas Stations?
I Do! There is one right by my house that is always the cheapest but since the spill I refuse to get gas from them.
Every time I drive by and see cars pumping gas I wonder what made them decide to support BP. Is it out of laziness to not go to the other gas station down the street? Do they not care about what is going on in the Gulf? I just don't get it!

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
I'm not- I was going to- but someone on here pointed out that you are doing nothing to BP- you are just hurting local business owners
And someone else had mentioned that BP sells to other non-branded gas stations so you may be buying it without knowing

Good point. I just wish there was a way to actually "hurt" BP and not the local business owner.

Same here. I haven't been to one since the whole thing started, but that's just coincidence, not on purpose.

I think doing so is misguided and should not be done.

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
no way! it really could have happened to any company. we do not have ANY proof that what happened was intential. Until then, I will get gas where it is most convient. Plus, I like to think that at least my money will now help them with the clean up. if we all stop going they will go bankrupt even fast and our tax dollars will wind up paying for it in the end
I have a friend who created a website and a FB page that now sells magnets for your car to boycott BP, I think its actually very silly

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
I would if I bought gas.
sorry... I'm still not supporting BP in anyway. I get the whole hurting business owners and what not. But sorry... still not comfortable doing it. I find it HARD to believe that NO kickbacks go to BP at all.
On a side note... a coworkers realtive works for Exxon mobile.. they are some scientific engineer or soemthing for them. She said that they knew eventually BP would have a problem like this... she said exxon has had 1 issue ove the course of about 20 years and that person got fired. BP has had over 25 and nothing ever came of any of them... no was was in trouble or fired, etc and they didnt' even try to research ways to fix the situations that did arise. It was inevitable that this would eventually happen at some point. And the real sad part is that no one ever thought to be proactive in their thinking and come up with a safety net or solution for IF this type of event should take place.
PS the top peope that work for other like companies are also working on trying to come up with fixes for the BP disaster.

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
"BP owns fewer than 200 gas stations in the USA, and consumers would be hard-pressed to distinguish them from the nearly 9,800 others that are owned or leased by dealers. All have long-term contracts to sell BP gas — contracts not easily jettisoned without paying a hefty fee. While BP makes money from these sales, they are a minuscule portion of the company's worldwide revenue."

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
The only thing it might do is hurt the local businessman who owns the station, which will negatively affect the entire neighborhood, including potentially the value of your house.
It could also potentially raise gas prices. Gas prices change for the strangest of reasons (at least to us customers who aren't in the loop), and a boycott could definitely have an effect on prices.... which means less money for us, and more for BP in the long run.
With absolutely no benefits (hurting BP), and nothing but possible negatives that could hurt me directly, no, I'm not boycotting.

basically it does hurt BP.. just not today. Because eventually the local business owners will stop franchising BP. they can switch their stations over to other companies. this is why i would boycott BP.
the other thing is that BP does distribute some gas to other companies.

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
Nope, especially since it only hurts local small business people.
I hope BP doesn't go under, then the US taxpayers are going to have to pay for the cleanup. I hope BP's stock goes back up and they can keep funneling money to the Gulf for as many years as this mess will take to clean up.

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
Absolutely not. There was a Gulf station right by my house which recently turned into a BP. The owners are the same people. Who's to say that when I was purchasing gas there when it was a Gulf wasn't BP gas?
I think people need to just stop with the blame. Yes, it is their fault! Get it f*cking stopped and cleaned up!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. I read an article that stated BP even profits when you go into the convenient store at their station to buy a soda or something.
While I feel bad for the "little guys", it's the risk you run when owning a business and franchise.

that's my view point
I want them to make $$$-- so they can spend it cleaning up this mess
Plus the gas is the cheapest there - and same price cash or credit- so it's a win/win for me

I really don't see the payoff. Let's possibly hurt BP in the long run, while in the process hurting our neighborhoods, small business owners, local economines, and home property values right now.
BP's going to get hurt by this spill NO MATTER WHAT. A boycott will not do anything to hurt them any more significantly than they will already be hurt. I will be shocked if the company even exists when the litigation over this ends. I'm not about to punish small business owners and my own neighborhood over it.
ETA -- and a quote directly from this article:
This is not to say you shouldn't choose a different gas station if the BP one makes you squeamish. Just bear in mind that doing so is a political act, one that has deals damage to BP's brand in the long-term, rather than having direct financial impact on BP. No, the immediate business loss will be most acutely felt by the local businessman. Over the years, that same guy could own the same stations, and change it from being a Shell, an Exxon, or a Sunoco, depending on who's got the best deal.

Re: Do you avoid BP Gas Stations?
its not about economics or hurting them in the wallet for me. I will not support, to my knowledge, a company that has blantantly disregarded safety measures, destroyed our ecosystem in the gulf and has put profit and costs savings above employee safety. Look at their pipelines in Alaska, people have died, employees of BP in Alaska have written to company CEOs about safety and line quality issues only to be ignored. They wrote warning them of dated and rotting equipment that need to be replaced for safety issues, they also have stated that its not a matter of if, but a matter of WHEN it happens. It falls on deaf ears.
Its about not supporting a company or a brand whose policies I do not agree with, whom I think is blatantly irresponsible. Its not about profits for me.

Really? that's not how I see it at all. I see it listing both sides of it actually... (both what you are saying and what I am saying...and I did also write that BP does sell gas to other companies as well) and the end states this:
"Then again, if no one is buying BP gas, do you think many new gas station owners are going to be eager to sign up for a BP franchise? Which would mean a loss of future franchise fee income for BP, and that will end up hurting their bottom line. Just not today."
so to me it's stating what I'm saying. Anything I said before the post with the link to the article came from ME not the artile. What I wrote in the post with the article was in regards to the article. I don't know if that's what you mean. When I said in reverse... what I meant was that it shows another side.
I found the artile to be non dominant.... it states information on both sides.
