Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?

Thanks for weighing in everyone. I used to think that having 1 drink with dinner and then driving was acceptable (I've done it) until all the horrible drunk driving incidents started making the news, especially on LI. It just really really made me think (and a little scared) about having even that 1 drink.
I was the same. I had done it a couple times in the past, but after hearing tons of horror stories related to drunk driving, as well as losing a friend to an accident with a drunk driver (and almost losing another), I decided even that ONE drink wasn't worth the risk. Especially now that I have two young children to factor into the scenario.
I'm a lightweight (and really not much of a drinker to begin with), so even one little drink can have a great effect on me. I can have fun without the alcohol if there's nobody there to drive me home!

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I will have up to two drinks (not back to back) over a leisurely dinner and drive. Anything more than that, and no, I will not drive.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
If I have to drive, I will have no more than 1 drink and wait at least an hour. If I know I'm eating quickly & have to run, I won't drink.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I don't drink, so, I don't drink and drive. I will drive if DH has 1 or 2. He will say "but I only had 1"...my reply "I don't give a crap..I'M driving"!
It just scares me! I'd much rather be safe than sorry.

If I had one drink with dinner I do not consider that drinking and driving.. and I highly doubt that my blood alcohol, after sitting at dinner for over an hour, would show an illegal limit if it were just one drink...
Same. I am very careful about driving impaired in any way for many reasons. Even with prescribed medication, not just drinking. Aside from the obvious reasons I could lose my my professional license if I get a DUI.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I always laugh when people say/ask 'I hope one or two drinks is OK after a meal and after giving myself plenty of time"... If you could see the reports on what was in the guy that hit Ken's system it would knock you OVER. LOL trust me, one drink is fine! He had (and this is a conservative estimate) NINETEEN LIQUOR drinks over the course of just four hours at the most. Then add in the fact that he hadn't slept in over 24 HOURS at that point! Then he tried to drive, going 75+ MPH over 65 miles from the Bronx to Shirley. *THAT* is drunk driver, reckless, and a total nightmare waiting to happen.
The limo driver / FG case - even worse! I mean, the amount of alcohol that is SOMEHOW in these people's system could kill a horse! My brother used to give the breath test and it would say "Take to Hospital" --that's what it would register!!!
So I think the biggest misconception is the "I can identify with the person who killed the flowergirl b/c I have had a glass of wine with dinner and then drove home" Ummmmm that's like saying I can identify with Scott Peterson because I pushed my significant other out of the way once. LOL! It is ridiculous to even try to compare a real deal drunk driver with someone who has a drink or two with dinner.
Do I drink and drive? No and I never have. A DWI or drinking and driving means that you would blow over the legal limit - that is what is illegal, that is what is dangerous. And never in my entire life since I got my license have I gone anywhere near that danger zone. When we go out we decide who is driving and who is drinking -- last time, for Pete's birthday, Vin drank and I had a glass of wine over the course of the night then after that had cokes and a huge plate of nachos lol then quesadillas lol and then I drove like four hours later so that he could really let loose with the guys and have fun for Pete's birthday. Last time we both drank and really drank was NYE and we called a cab going and rode with his parents (FIL didn't drink) home. It was a lot of fun! I feel good when I go out and have fun and do it the right way. There's no reason it needs to be so dangerous and out of control.

All that being said - you make a great point. Everyone DOES need to take into consideration their body and tolerance and how they handle alcohol. As well as what they have eaten, how much, the time frame, etc. I have a friend who really can't handle even one drink lol. So yeah she steers clear of all that stuff.

If there isn't a designated driver, I won't drink. Plain and simple.
Agreed. However, DH does not drink so typically I am free to do so without worry

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
DW and never drink if we are driving home. We'll decide before hand who gets to have a drink if they want, and the other one of us has a sip just to taste it, but we never drink if we're driving.
Plus, I'm a lightweight (probably since I rarely drink), and I feel a little tipsy after one drink, so there's no way I would feel comfortable trying to control a one ton hunk of metal at 55 MPH.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
today no, one drink per hour or designated driver. ALWAYS!
When i was younger i did a few times when i was buzzed (early 20's) but i did most of my drinking in the city so i trained it all the time.
Once when I was REALLY bad but i was on a blind date, fed drinks and thought we would go to the movies and chill some more and he locked me in his car and attacked me (luckily i escaped) but drove home because i really wasn't thinking. That was the one and only time.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
Yes I usually have one drink with dinner, One drink does not affect me. If I'm at a party and have had a few drinks, I usually make sure I have eaten after and wait a few hours between stopping drinking and driving. If I felt the least bit buzzed at all I wouldnt drive....ever....Since having children, my perception has changed big time.

I would imagine that a majority on here have had A drink with a meal and then driven home... But bc of all these dicussions today, most will prob say no or not even respond at all for fear of being thrown under the LIF bus...
I think most people (well people who are not "non-drinkers") have driven at least once after 1 or 2 beers
And I dont think anyone would flame anyone. Its not illegal and almost all of us will not be affected by one drink while eating and over the course of a meal.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
If I am the dd, I don't drink. The only time is if the restaurant is in the same mall as our movie theater and we plan to do dinner and a movie. Then it is at least 2 hours that I am driving after my drink, which is acceptable. Even then, I would only have 1 drink. I've done that once and feel fine about it. Otherwise, no.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I have a few drinks a week, usually wine with dinner.
If I'm driving I will sometimes have a glass with dinner or one drink. I will always accompany it with water and food.
I don't go out and drink only and then drive.
I will never put myself at risk of hurting myself, my passenger or others on the road. I have judgement and that's why I have limits.
If I have two glasses of wine or two drinks I know I'm impaired. I will have to wait it out and I do. I have called a cab as well.

Here's an interesting link to calculate BAC based on height and weight. What they don't factor in is whether you are a casual drinker or non-drinker (which is me) because when I kept upping the alcohol content to see how much before I'm legally drunk I would probably be in the emergency room getting my stomach pumped!
BAC calculator
umm... 14 drinks later and my BAC is only at .061!! Umm.. what's the legal limit?? .08 right?? becuase if so... I'm not even at the legal limit and that's WITH 14 drinks??

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I will only have 1 drink if I am going to be somewhere for a couple of hours. If I am just going to dinner, I would not have a drink. Only because I rarely drink, even 1 margarita can make me a little tipsy.
For most people, I think 1 drink is ok. But for me, its not. I don't mess around with that

I will have a glass of wine for dinner, but then have a coke after and eat a full meal and i would still drive home. I have a high tolerance (no using that as an excuse) but i know my limit, and if i at all fel slightly tippsy, aint no way i am driving!

If I am driving I won't have any drinks at all. If after having 1 drink I ever got into an accident the what ifs for the rest of my life would kill me. Plus what is the point of one. One is too many and twenty is not enough

Yes (read on before making the nasty comments), and I would imagine that a majority on here have had A drink with a meal and then driven home... But bc of all these dicussions today, most will prob say no or not even respond at all for fear of being thrown under the LIF bus...
When I go out to dinner and happen to be driving (normally, im with DH and he always drives) we both can have a beer with our meals and be totally a-okay... Is that technically drinking and driving? I guess so, but we're not even buzzed in the least ... Now if you're feeding me 2 margaritas in under an hour... then we have a problem and of course, i'll wait it out
I agree.
Even my strong stance on Drinking and Driving I must say I'd be lying if I said I NEVER had a drink then drove.
But I think it also has a lot to do with what you can handle and how much that one drink is going to affect you.
I have been known to have a margarita and still drive home but that one drink takes me literally an HOUR to finish off and that's before the extra hour and two sodas I have after it. To say I'm not even slightly buzzed would be an understatement at that point.
However if I'm having a DRINK, DRINK (aka hard liquor straight up) I wont drive. If I can't take the time to sit, relax, sip my drink then spend more time sipping sodas and relaxing then I'm probably not out having fun anyway so I don't drink at all, much less drive.
Drinking is a treat. Getting drunk is over indulgence and never, ever fun.
Driving is a very responsible action. Each action with it needs to be taken seriously and that includes drinking.
I don't drink to get buzzed or to 'loosen up'. I drink like its a sweet treat. Once and awhile its fine. But I dont need two or three. If I choose to indulge in a 'few' drinks then I don't drive.
So yes, one drink (with conditions) and I will drive.
Same goes for sleepiness. I dont drive period if I can't give the road my total attention. It only takes a second and your world can be changed....

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I have kids. I am maybe.. OVERLY cautious as a result.
If I drink a glass of wine or a beer - I WILL drive home - but I will wait at least an hour before doing so. If I have more than a glass of wine or a beer - I do NOT drive. At all. Even if it's a glass and a half.. the line is drawn somewhere. If I drink ANY hard alcohol - tequila, rum, vodka, bourbon or the like - I do not drive.

Having one or two drinks with dinner doesn't even affect some people at all. Dinner is a very long and drawn out process and you're eating while drinking.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I'll have 1 drink with dinner or whatever and then drive home at the end of the night.
Except, this weekend, my friend gave me a beer-a foreign beer with much higher alcohol content. That got me buzzed. We were there for 8 hours and ate a lot during the day so I was fine to drive later on but for that beer I would not have felt comfortable driving 2-3 hours later.

Re: Do you EVER drink and drive?
I barely drive now. But I would only have 1 glass of wine or 1 beer. I drink slow, and I won't drive right away, I'd wait a little. I won't personally have liquor if driving because different alcohols effect me differently. And some drinks are made stronger than others. I could probably handle two beers or wines, but to be safe I wouldn't push it just incase it happens to hit me harder than expected. people need to know their tolorence levels since everyones is different.
