Re: Do you feed your newborn on demand?

I feed on demand.... At such a young age its hard for them to be on a "set" feeding schedule...Some days she eats more than others....

Re: Do you feed your newborn on demand?

I EBF and try to stay on a 3hr schedule. If she seems hungry before that I'll offer the binky. If she seems unhappy w/that and can't wait till 3hrs are up, I'll feed her then.

yes, until about 6 pm. Then I try to time it so I can get a feed in around 9:30 pm so I can lay down at 10 pm. I feed her more often, not less.

Re: Do you feed your newborn on demand?

I was told by my ped to feed on demand, esp. when the baby is that young. She will create her own schedule. Good luck! Chat Icon

Yes, I feed on demand...I honestly didn't know there was any other option. I don't think newborns can overeat... Chat Icon

Yes, I am BFing on demand. Sometimes he's done nursing and he is still looking for more. When that's the case I will supplement with a 2 oz. vottle. He'll usually take 1/2 oz to 1 oz. and is done.
There has been times where he will drink the whole 2 oz. I think he was going through a growth spurt.

This is what I just started doing, only I use pumped breast milk. We currently have a baby nurse staying with us to help out and she recommended doing this to just make sure DD is really full as you never really know how much they are taking in when you breast feed. I feed her, then top her off with anywhere from an ounce to 2 ounces of pumped breast milk.

ETA: This is also helping her to sleep better at night since we know she is full.

The pediatrician told me to feed on demand until 4 months - the most. He said that when DS started food there was no need to feed on demand.

I was also BFing so BF babies eat more often.

We fed Emerson whenever she wanted which pretty much amounted to a bottle every 3 hrs. on the nose. Chat Icon At 7 1/2 weeks she cut out the late, late night bottle and started sleeping from 10pm until 8:30am and by 3 months she cut out the last late bottle and started sleeping from 8pm every night until 7am in the morning without waking. I EBF for the first 8 weeks on demand.

When I added in bottles during the day at about 8 weeks it was still on demand.

I noticed no real eating "schedule" until DS started sleeping through the night at 10 weeks.

Re: Do you feed your newborn on demand?

Abby is 6 months old and is still fed on demand and its always every three hours. It evolved into a schedule. When I was BFing (when she was a newborn), it was every two hours. Fortunately, when she got old enough, she began to slep through the night. when she is awake, she is either given a bottle or solids every three hours.

i feed on demand now, b/c i got the okay from the doc. dd is 6 wks. now. i was waking her up every 3-4 hrs., but the doc said if she sleeps 5-6 hrs. and isn't hungry, it's okay to let her sleep now.

my friend's baby gained 9 oz. in a week and their doc felt it was too much so they said he put their baby on a diet---i don't exactly know what that entailed though Chat Icon
