Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
I have noticed that when the lights first went in but now that they have been there for awhile, no...it seems that people are aware of them and are better prepared to stop. I have particularly noticed this at 347 and Nichols Rd.

I don't understand why NY cops don't crack down more heavily on reckless driving and get these people to pay til it hurts and/or lose their licenses. Everyone would benefit.
honestly - the red light cameras are good in the sense that they really aren't fight-able tickets. leaves out the discretion factor/pba card factor. the camera doesn't care whose wife/daughter/son/pet you are.
ITA with you. And it's unfortunate if PBA cards do that, because anyone driving recklessly can kill someone--even the friends and families of officers.
There will be much needless death/ tragedy until we wak up and start making it hurt financially or otherwise to weave in and out, run lights, etc. And anyone can be a victim.

No I think people that never adhered to a red light before cause accidents.
Exactly.

correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't yellow mean caution or, in laymans terms "slow the fluck down" rather than "speed up and try to make the light"
so, to me, all the red light cameras do is point out the jackwads that have not learned what their colors mean.
there is a redlight camera right on the corner by my house of a very fast moving street and I LOVE when that sucker goes off to asswipes who don't feel like stopping.

I see no benecial purpose to those cards except allow people to drive like maniacs and get away with it. They should not be allowed.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
I think that as much as I hate them, they are necessary. Id rather get rear ended then T-bones or get hit head on. Eventually people will get the idea that they need to slow down and stop sooner. I think they also need to shorten the amount of time on yellow like they do in NYC

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
Where I live they have been installing a lot of new cameras and I notice that I am a lot more likely to hit the brakes when I see a yellow than hit the gas (which is what I used to do ) Sometimes this means that I stop way too early, and I can totally see how this type of thing could cause a little bit of chaos.
After a while everyone should be able to gauge at what point they need to slow down and when they will make it through the yellow, and there won't be as many near colliisions.

Exactly my point! People tend to think yellow means to speed up instead of slow down, so you have these idiots speeding up to miss the red which can cause rear end collissions.
Or then you have the idiots cursing out the guy who stops short in front of him because they didn't want to speed up to make the light.
People are in such a rush all the time.

LOVE THEM LOVE THEM LOVE THEM!!!! Amen sista!!!!! I love that they have them on Merrick Road in Merrick. That place is like a gathering of idiot drivers, and I am sorry but if you are going the SPEED LIMIT (in that area) and the light changes stopping should be a non issue.

I agree with you, BUT SOMETIMES... the Yellows at certain Lights (Merrick and Jerusalem to be exact) are MUCH SHORTER then others... so I get nervous when its green b/c I don't know if its going to change to yellow and then red in a matter of .2 secs instead of the normal ratio...

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
I have noticed it a lot.... people tend to even slow down when it is green in fear that it will turn red! while I do not mind slowing down, its the slamming on the brakes and yet the light is clearly green!

I'm all for "brotherhood" but not special treatment. If the laws exist for all, they should exist for all. Whenever my DH has gotten out of a ticket, it bugs me to no end. One day I hope he gets a cop who will issue him a ticket for his wrongdoing.

I think it's caused a lot of fender benders, which I have seen first hand. Someone stomping on their brakes last minute.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
I haven't seen that yet but I know for a fact my DH is going to cause an accident. If he is driving and the light JUST turns yellow as he approaches, he slams on his breaks. He is definitely going to get rear ended doing that. I think most people pass through if the light changes to yellow just as you are about to go through the intersection (to distinguish from as one is approaching from a distance it turns yellow and speeds up).

It is not illegal to go through a yellow light. If you're approaching a yellow and you can make it through you are more than welcome to. Some yellows last longer than others. So if you miscalculate by a fraction of a second you now get a ticket.
Nobody is perfect. My DH got a red light camera ticket. He's an extremely careful driver, who thought it was safer to go through a yellow light (that he assumed would last longer than it did) instead of slamming on his brakes in his work van. He miscalculated, he was wrong, he paid the ticket, and he will do whatever he can to make sure it never happens again. He is not an "asswipe".
And FTR I think they are a GOOD thing. Everyone should get used to driving a little slower and being a little quicker to stop. But not everyone who is going to get this ticket is a complete moron.

All the time. It is extremely dangerous especially since the yellow lights are like 2 seconds long.
Yep, my gauge is the crossing signal for pedestrians...if its flashing I'll stop at a green light because the yellow is like a NANO second.
I've already gotten 2 tickets at the light at Newbridge and Jerusalem while I was waiting to make a left hand turn. You get stuck under the light and have no choice!
This light is a block from my house so you can see why i've gotten 2 tickets at the same light.
ETA: I am not an asswipe

Yep I've noticed this a lot.
I'm surprised others have not.
Is it bad or good? Who really knows - but yes, I have noticed it.
Yep. I have too. In fact, this happened to me the other day. I was in no way going fast..I always drive the speed limit but as I was approaching the light it turned yellow and I was so close that I didnt know if I should just keep going and risk being in the middle of the intersection when it turned red or just slam on my brakes and stop. I did stop, luckily the drive behind me was not to close to me.
