We don't have set hours - just the amount of time we are supposed to "work" each day (7hrs, 45 minutes).
I arrive at 7:45 and leave on 4:45, unless there's something I need to stay late for, and usually take a short lunch - so I guess the answer is no - I work longer than I am supposed to.
Per previous poster - it's not the quantity of the time that determines a promotion - it's the quality of the work.

Well that is a harsh statement. Just because your company expects someone to stay late/come in early in order to get raises, doesn't mean that is the norm.
At my company they do not want us there early or late without it being authorized. There are promotions and raises.
Same here. It would not matter if I was here at 7am every day. I don't get paid for it and our promotions are based on tests and performance, not number of hours worked. Even for our "assistants" 
ETA: I work till 4pm, but our doors are locked at 4:45pm so I couldn't stay later than that even if I wanted to.
I would tell you not to be so obnoxious but I have a feeling that would fall on deaf ears, knowing your history here

Before I had a baby I'd stay late here and there.
Now that I have a baby I have to leave right on the dot to make it to daycare to pick her up before they close.

Nope! I don't have set hours and my job is far from 9-5. I don't stay as late as I did before having DS, but I am constantly bringing work home with me and on the weekends.

yes - most fo the time. if I have to get something done, I don't just elave it though. Good thing for me is I get time and a half after 5pm. And two nights a week I stay till 7.

99% of the time I leave right at 4:30 like I'm supposed to.
However, I do arrive at work between 6:45am and 7:00am everyday, 30 to 45 minutes early and start working. There are technical things I do with that alone time that I can't do while other people are here. So for me, it makes sense.
And the reason I leave on time is because I am able to prioritize my work and meet all my goals and deadlines. The benefits of being organized. 
eta: just read the other posts... I don't get paid overtime either and I do get consistent raises.
To me, working late doesn't automatically equate dedication. Sometimes it means you're not making effective use of normal business hours.

100% yes. My hours are 830-415. I leave at 415 to catch my bus....
I usually get in b/w 830 and 9..but usually no one is in yet(this is only recently bc I used to get in at 8 and no one is in)
With no raise or bonus, I don't see a need to come in super early. ESP since I'm usually the first one in.
I never usually have to stay late-I am done with my work by 12:00 lol.

The people in my building work 9-5 and they are usually gone by 4:50.
My hours are the same but I am generally here by 8:30 (to avoid traffic) and I usually end up staying til 5, sometimes I will leave by 4:45.

we don't really have a quitting time
i work in advertising - we're here until the work for the day is done (i'm also salaried)
So, i get in at about 9:20 every day and usually leave at 6, but it's quite common to be here until 7, 8 or whatever is needed
But we're also flexible in that we don't start at 9 on the dot, and if i need to come in late or leave early, its fine just as long as my work is covered

My hours are 9:30 to 5:30.
I very rarely leave exactly at 5:30. I don't shut down until 5:30 on a good day - I don't feel right about getting ready to leave before that time. But I do get paid overtime and I'll be putting in at least a half hour a day all week..
It's tough but with no raise on the horizon I need to pull in all the extra money I can.

Kids leave anywhere between 2:30 and 3. Im paid til 3 unless I have a meeting requiring me to stay til 3:30. If I stay til 3:30 one day, I leave at 2:30 another day within that pay period provided we are in ratio when I have to go - I teach special ed. Its law.

if your hours are 9-5 why should you work before or after if you dont want to
some people do there work and get it done - that should be enough for getting raises and promotions
most people have lives outside work and dont want to spend there whole night there. i dont get paid enough to work outside 9-5 - not worth it to me - id rather spend that tiem with my husband and pup!

My salaried hours are 8:30-4:30. I am in & e-mailing my boss every day at 8. I do leave promptly at 4:30.
By putting in the extra half hour everyday my boss has no problem with me taking extra time off.

Since my only job (mostly, sometimes, depending on my manager's mood) is to occupy a chair and change oxygen into carbon dioxide, I usually leave by 5:15. I always, always stay late if needed though, even if not asked.

Im a substitute teacher so I go in a half hour before the kids come in to look over the plans for the day and I leave the minute all the kids are on the buses. No need to stay later.

My day officially starts at 7:25 and ends at 2:40 (teacher), but I'm in everyday by 6:50, and I'm never out earlier than 3:15 and usually much later. (I'd say I leave on average by 3:30, though.) It never occurs to me to run out the door since I am bogged down by kids all the way there for one reason or another. (But when I worked in publishing, I couldn't WAIT to leave at 5.)

I leave right at 5. I am out the door FAST. I feel bad doing it but I work like a horse and I am not staying another minute unless it's absolutely needed.
