Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
If things are slow I will leave at 5. But if things are busy or I'm in a groove, I will stay later than that.
I don't get paid any kind of overtime. I have to finish my work in a timely manner, no matter how much of a workload there is. So if I need to stay until 11pm to meet a deadline I will and have done it.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
Yup. Everyday at 4:30, I am outta there. Alot of people at my job stay late, but that's because they spend 2-3 hrs a day walking around/or on personal calls. I make sure everything that needs to be addressed for the day is done by the time 4:30 rolls around. I like to think I have good time mgmt skills.

i don't get paid before 9 or after 5 so i walk in the door at 9 and out at 5.
Damn, hope you don't expect any good promotions or raises with that outlook.
Even our assistants know they need to stay late/come in early now and then.
its' not quantity of time, its quality of your work! I was promoted twice in 2 years, and I will never work more 9-5

almost never...
My job isn't a 9-5 job, most people work on a 10-6 schedule...BUT you would be hardpressed to see people at 10 am (I am usually in by 9:50). People roll in at will....I have noticed at this place that the place is usually clear by 6:30.
I often work late on a project basis and have often worked around the clock.
similar to this - minus the round the clock bit - but that has happened too occasionally

I teach. I am required to be there 7:30-3:00. (The students are required to be there 7:38-2:29) I usually get to work at about 7:10. I leave anywhere from 3-3:30 depending upon if students stay for extra help.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
Yes, I normally leave right at quitting time except for the rare occasion that there's some kind of special project going on, a deadline, etc. and the work can't wait until tomorrow morning. Then I stay late, work through lunch, or do whatever I have to do.
One of the things I love about the corporate culture here is that the emphasis is on getting your work done accurately and efficiently, not on staying until all hours of the night in an attempt to look important. I'm certainly not saying that I think ALL jobs where people stay late it's for no reason, but I know there are some offices where there's intense pressure not to be the first to go home for the night, just for fear of looking like a slacker. I'm so glad I don't work at one of those places.

ITA.. I believe in: work smarter, not harder (or longer in this instance). I dont play the game that alot of the other employees play. They will stay till 5:30 or 6, just to look 'important' or that they are doing 'extra work' to impress my boss, but what they really are doing is talking to their friend on the phone. If it gets them a raise, then god bless. I just dont have it in me to do that. My time is precious.

ITA.
A pet peeve of mine is people who stay late for the sake of looking like they "work so hard". In many cases if you were efficient you would be able to get it done w/i your work hours (not always of course, no flames )
annoyedTTCer: I am not sure if you realize how offensive your posts are but I notice your name as being someone who intentionally says rude things. Even the way you said "Even our assistants..." as if you are HTH. It is truly irritating.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
Absolutely!
And so does my boss. And so does his boss!
And, FTR, I have received plenty of raises, bonuses and promotions!
My DH is an hourly employee. If he works overtime, he is paid time and a half. If he works overtime on the weekends, he is paid double time. He would not work one single SECOND past his quitting time unless he was paid overtime for it!

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
Our phones are open 9-6. I'm in long before 9 and don't usually leave until after 6:30. No such thing as 'quitting time'... I work when I'm home too.
I don't work late/early because I love to work or have some desire to prove that I am dedicated. I work because I have sh*t that needs to get done.
ETA: I don't get overtime.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
When I worked for someone else I almost always stayed late. It was not for any lack of efficiency. I just work well in the late afternoon and evening and I had my own goals for what I wanted to accomplish in a day. When I realized that I was treated the same as the employees who did not care if their work was eventually assigned to me so that it would get done, I started to think about starting my own business. I've been self employed for 9 years now.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
Pretty much. I'll stay if there are external auditors working in the office or if there's something that needs to go out before I leave. Otherwise, I plan my day so my work is finished on time.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
No. I'm there past others quite often (including tonight). Also, I'm always responding to emails 24/7.
It is expected in my industry. I'm not hourly, I'm salaried. And I'm constantly working. I am very efficient, so it has nothing to do with a lack of effort on my part.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
Yup. I'm a secretary & I close the office up the nights I work. Once the office hours are done & the phones go off, there's really no reason for me to be there anymore & I'd get strange looks if I stayed (providing there were anyone there to even look, which there rarely is by closing time). If I'm finishing something up, I'll stay a few minutes, but it's incredibly rare that I'd have to do that.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
I leave right on time most days. If I stay late one night without pay, I will make up for it the next day. There is no benefit financially or in job security to stay late.

Re: Do you leave work right at quitting time?
No, but teaching is my profession so there is always prep work outside of contract hours.
When I worked corporate, though, I did work for some time at a company where you were viewed positively in many departments because you stayed later. I played the game and it helped my career, but I hated that I needed to do that.
It really is dependent on corporate culture, though.
