Do you think it's wrong to hire "Day Laborers" to help you move/paint?
My brother-in-law is moving today and hired 2 guys to help him move. Around where I live they are always outside waiting for work, so he offered them a moving job. Apparently they are doing a great job, but I can't help but feel bad for them. However, I'm finding that alot of people do this for moving, painting.
What are your thoughts on this?

I would never. What if someone got hurt? Would you pay their medical bills?

I think its a great thing when they are hired. This is the only work they get. So being hired, pays them and I am sure they are happy for it. I always get sad when I see them waiting outside the hardware store in the morning but when they get picked up for work, it seems to make their day.

I didn't say I agreed with it, I just wanted opinions. As I said my brother in law did, but I have also found since DH is a police officer and works in an area where there are alot of illegal immigrants, alot of times they opt to not to go a hospital out of fear of being deported and having medical expenses. Of course if I (which I haven't) used them and they got hurt, then I would offer to pay..it's the RIGHT THING TO DO!!!!!.
I'm on the fence about it. I just don't know if it is something I would do.

I dont feel sorry for them at all!!
Become a resident (Im not saying you have to become a citizen, but at least have your green card) and then get a job and pay taxes like the rest of us!!!!!

I used them for my move also. They are honest hard working people that just want a days pay. The guys I got worked their butts off. I treated them to lunch at a chinese Buffet and paid them. They were SOOOOOOOOOOO happy!! Even talked to us about their lives. And they thanked us immensly for treating them with respect and dignity. They are not illegal by choice.

It's not that easy. They PRAY and work hard to try and get their green cards. It's just a lengthy process.
But this can be long debated and i don't contribute to that so I will retreat now.

I think there is nothing wrong with it if they are legal or not. They are the ones sitting around waiting to be picked up. Yes it may be illegal because it's off the books, but to bad that's the governments fault for not deporting them back to wherever they came from!!!

Of course I would hire them to help me out! Despite the fact that they don't have a job, these poor guys want to earn a living by working (instead of robbing, or selling drugs)...whether they are here legally or illegally.

Yes, I have hired them
It is not that easy to become a resident of the US... many try and can't... they want to work! This is long debated ... everyone will have different opinions on it...

Re: Do you think it's wrong to hire "Day Laborers" to help you move/paint?
I have no qualms in using illegal day laborers. We have been ripped off way too many times by "contractors" who do a ridiculously poor job, for which we've paid thousands.
I believe in a free economy - if these guys do good work, for less money, then yes, I'll hire them.
As for getting your green card and paying taxes, does anyone have an inkling of an idea as to how ridiculously expensive, and confusing that process entails? The government makes it virtually impossible for a poor migrant worker to obtain citizenship. Until that process is less expensive, and less confusing, I have absolutely no problem with hiring them.

Me too. Most of these guys are very hard working and need money to feed their families. If you are concerned that they don't pay taxes like "the rest of us," then whats the difference between hiring them or a contractor you pay cash to? Do you think that contractor is paying taxes on the money you just gave him??

Re: Do you think it's wrong to hire "Day Laborers" to help you move/paint?
So I have a question for anyone that said they would hire them. Do you like paying all the taxes that we do, so that people that DONT pay taxes can collect the benefits? I know I dont.
I have not problem with giving someone a break and helping them out BUT there has to be a point where that person needs to step up and become part of the society that they are living in instead of taking all the time!!!

as sweet tooth mentioned, it is no different than paying your mechanic or contractor cash for a job they do....they are not paying tax on that money either....
I do not see anything wrong with it.

I couldn't agree more- people never seem to have an issue with if I pay you cash- will you not charge me tax
these guys just want to work hard to make a better life- I for one- would like to see them be allowed to stay- but that's another debate

The difference is the contractor most likely has a license and is required to have insurance so if something happens you’re not liable and you and your assets are protected.
I am a tax accountant and I see some of my honest contractors going out of business because they can't compete with the prices of people who hire illegals who don't have to worry about silly things like licenses and insurance.
This isn't meant to sound snotty, it's just the reality, it's not ONLY taxes, and there's a ripple effect. One of my clients goes out of business, now my firm has ALSO lost that revenue...
