Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
Just curious to see if others thought they are worth it.
ETA: I am in the process of switching.
Is there a difference in brands?

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
I've switched almost every bulb...but with energy prices increasing - I can't tell if they made a difference or not.

The only reason I don't buy them is the way they need to be dispose.

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
other - we only have 1 energy saving bulb in the living room
I don't like that it takes time to warm up - which is why I don't want to put them in the bathroom or other rooms. I'm also not thrilled with the kind of light that it is. it's not as soft as an incandescent bulb.

how is that? they have mercury in them, which is very dangerous if they break.

We have them in certain light fixtures, mainly fixtures that aren't on dimmers, which would be outdoors and some of the basement lights. We tried the dimmable EE bulbs (high-hats and sconce bulbs), but they just didn't work for us.

That is what my DH said and I agree. I thought maybe a different brand or the ones that look more like a regular bulb might be better? We have 8 bulbs jusst in the fixtures over the master bathroom 2 sinks, then a shower light, a center light, and a comode light. So I'd like to get something for the (2) 4 = 8 fixtures

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
DH has been working on switching all the bulbs in our house... right now i think the only ones that aren't energy efficient are the ones in the bedrooms and the den.

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
We changed all the bulbs in our apartment and we saw a decrease in our monthly bill. We just moved into our house and are still working on changing all the bulbs. The lighting is different but you get used to it. I find the most annoying thing is waiting for them to get fully bright. It takes a minute. But I think it's worth it.
But like the previous poster said, you can't throw them in the garbage because of the mercury. So we are just keeping ours till we make a trip to STOP to dump our other stuff like paint cans.

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
I have been swapping out regular bulbs for the CFLs as they burn out.
FYI...Home Depot accepts used, unbroken CFL bulbs and recycles them properly.

Thanks for the info- one of ours just burned out (it lasted a really, really long time) and DH said that he almost regretted using it because he didn't know what to do with it!

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
I'm switching them out as the old ones burn out (I'm not throwing out still functioning bulbs... that kind of defeats the purpose of "going green"). I've returned two old bulbs to HD already (I've had a couple of CFL bulbs for several years now, but just recently working on converting the entire house).
The mercury in CFL bulbs is the least of my concerns. There is so much mercury in so many other products in the house. If a bulb breaks, just open the windows in the room, and about 30 minutes later, it's totally safe. There are literally tons of mercury being dumped in the air every year by coal-burning plants used to make the electricity to power our non-mercury bulbs. Old thermostats have a LOT of mercury in them.
Irons with a shut-off switch have mercury, some cordless phones, old microwave ovens, some digital cameras, some doorbells, all computers, cars, etc, etc......

We have 4 right now in the LR. As the old ones burn out we'll switch them out most likely.

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
I tried to , but its not really working fo us. Our outside light had one, but it is on a timer whic also controls the vesebule light, and every since the outside one was swithced, it flickers when its off, and the inside bulb keeps going out & now own't work at all, eenwitha new bulb. We tried a CF bulb in the vestebule, but is also flickered, I guess because of the timer.
In my bathroom, the buzzed, in my bedroom, one kind made the whole room looked blue & the other made the whole room look yellow.
I have 1 in a lamp in the LR & 1 in the walk closet, they are ok, but dull. I'd like to try other brands, but I only ever see the GE ones.

same here. a lot of our lights are on dimmers, so we can't use them, but for the most part, we have them in our house.

There are dimmable CFLs, as well as 3-way CFLs. I've seen the dimmable and 3-ways at HomeDepot.
They also have flame-shaped ones.

Re: Do you use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
No for safety reasons b/c I have kids. They have mercury in them and if one of them breaks (say a lamp is knocked over by accident) it is toxic.
