Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
So for the past 2 weeks we have seen this stark white cat come and go mostly in our backyard. Whenever we do see it it is always in this low stance creaping along. Almost like it is ready to pounce and kill something. Many of our surrounding neighbors have mentioned seeing the cat as well.
Now anyone living in the Levittown area will tell you that there are bunnies (rabbits) all over the place. This brings me to the nasty part. Just yesterday DH had to clean up another slaughtered bunny carcas from our backyard It was our third so far this summer! Gross!
What is really sad is about a week before this cat showed up we had a bunny give birth to 6 or 7 baby bunnies in our backyard. They were so cute! We haven't seen them since though and don't know what happened to them. Damb cat!

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
the same thing happened to us, except the cat killed a few SQUIRRELS! I had the unfortunate experience of hearing this slaughter too, it was so disgusting. It was right under our LR window I had no idea cats could be so vicious
Our neighbor has called the Town and has trapped a few and brought them over to some shelter....it's a PITA he says though.

Its a part of life. It stinks but its not like we dont do the same. Don't you eat meat? Its the circle of life.

aww thats so sad, but it is the circle of life, its just how it works out, but I understand why it bothers you. maybe try and leave food out for the cat to eat if your bothered by it? but then your going to have to continue b/c the cat will probally count on you for it.

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
Yeh, I understand the "circle of life" argument but I don't need Suburban Wild Kingdom playing itself out in my backyard every week! My DH doesn't need a second job as an animal undertaker either. Hopefully the cat will move on to greener (bunny filled) pastures!

Yikes! I'd be afraid this would attract more cats and then we would really be on the hook!

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
It doesnt matter if you leave food out. For cats its the hunt that they love, thats how they play. It sucks but it the way it is.

It could be a racoon. Just b/c you physically saw a cat, doesn't mean the cat did it.

I do not know what cat deterrent is...however, please do not put down anything that is dangerous to a cat or any animal. All outside animals are just doing what they do naturally.

Yeh, we never intentionally interact with any of these animals and would certainly never feed them. We just hang back and let them do their thing.

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
It's not nessesarly a "feral" cat. Could be someones pet. And they let it back in the house after that. YUCK! My neighbor's cats hide under my deck and try to catch the birds at my birdfeeder.

Can't we just let nature take care of nature. If you want to plant or use visual deterants that is up to you, but I found this on that site. http://www.cat-repellant.info/html/ultrasonic-deterrents.htm
I have an indoor cat, but we have outdoor or stray cats in my neighborhood. If my neighbor put an electronic deterant in his yard and it screwed with my cat I think there would be a problem.

Call the town.
My mom's neighborhood has a family of feral cats that several of the neighbors have been feeding for years

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
I'm not sure I really understand the issue here. There is an animal killing rabbits, how can you say it is the cat? Just because you saw it? Racoons can kill rabbits. So can owls. So can a number of other predators. Its nature.
If you think there is a feral cat problem in your neigborhood, you can start to do TNR.
ETA: if there was nothing controlling the rabbit population, they would run rampant. Ever hear of the expression "Reproduce like bunnies?" There is a reaso for that expression

I said the same thing. Unless you see the cat do it, you don't know it's the cat at all. We have raccoons all over LI. Last night our neighbor saw a mother raccoon and 3-4 babies in my neighbor's driveway, in broad daylight.
Don't assume it's the cat. I am very concerned that someone might harm the cat thinking they are "doing the right thing" somehow.

She's right about the TNR. That is really your best bet if they are feral. You don't want 12 more! I'd do it but in my neighborhood they are my peoples pets so I stick to my super soaker. There are a few that I haven't seen since I got them with the water.

I was thinking of something very similar: Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler
The reviews seem pretty good.

Ok, Ill admit I don't have proof positive that this cat is responsible and it could be a racoon or owl. It was just a gut feeling. Time will tell.

I turn on my sprinklers when the neighbors kids are acting up. I find water to be an harmless yet safe deterrent for all "pests".
