I can understand your frustration. Another poster had mentioned doing the TNR. This is something you may want to look into--we are actually trapping a cat tonight to be fixed.
Always a good idea to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem. This way, you won't have any more than that 1 cat hunting on your property!

I do not know what cat deterrent is...however, please do not put down anything that is dangerous to a cat or any animal. All outside animals are just doing what they do naturally.

That's not even funny. I couldn't be friends with someone like that, if that is true.
One day animals, another day possibly humans.

Yeh, I understand the "circle of life" argument but I don't need Suburban Wild Kingdom playing itself out in my backyard every week! My DH doesn't need a second job as an animal undertaker either. Hopefully the cat will move on to greener (bunny filled) pastures!
under taker LOL LOL
I love cats, but DH and I witnessed one killing a pidgeon we would yell at him, and he would stop for a minute and go right back, it was awful. I guess the bird was hurt or sick and couldn't fly. now we nicknamed this cat the murderer and we see it all the time. Terrible but I guess it's their nature

Illegal in the US but go to other countires animals are not always held in the same regard. I would never hurt an animal but yes I do know people who do not get the warm and fuzzies about animals but yet are kind hearted to humans--its cultural---take Korea and the eating of dogs--some are food and some are pets.
But this post isnt about my friend. Good luck with the ferall cat to the OP.

If you see my post had a not a HA HA at the end because I know some people do not act humane in situations such as these.....why am I explaining.... If you want to comment about my friend feel free. Its a free board, I just sensed drama coming due to you making what can be perceived as a judgemental comment about me for being his friend so I even offered an explaination--different culture. Different view on animals. Lucky the feral cat isnt in that country.

Always a good idea to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem. This way, you won't have any more than that 1 cat hunting on your property!
We are over run with feral cats! I can count up to 8 cats in my yard on any given day. I think the previous owner fed them. One night I heard a kitten crying and I found a newborn kitten in the corner of my yard, abandoned.
I listened to the other cries and they were coming from a neighbors yard so I knocked on her door. She was very suspicious at first, but when I explained the situation, she unlocked the padlock on her gate and let me into the backyard.
You would NOT believe me if I told you how many cat houses and cat bowls were there. Apparently she feeds all the feral cats and they go "hunting" in my yard. Her other neighbors say the smell of cat urine can be overwhelming at times.
I don't know WHAT to do about this situation. WE have a baby now. I've called all the authorities, but they recommend TNR. (there is a new litter of kittens every spring) but that's not going to make the backyard safer for DS.
I'm at a loss, truthfully. I know this lady thinks she's helping these cats by feeding them, but she's not.
PS - I took the abandoned kitten to the vet and nursed him, but he died a few days later.

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
My apartment in Islip has this feral cat problem. There is this one cat who constantly walks the complex and harasses my cat through the window! It is so annoying and once my cat and this other cat (which jumped on my AC unit) were going at it through the window. I've never seen my cat so po'd, he is the sweetest most gentlest cat.

I know your post was not agreeing with what he does. I did realize that. I said "not even funny" as a general statement, not b/c I thought you found it funny. There are other people out there who might find what you said about your friend funny unfortunately, hence my "not even funny".
I think it's unrealistic of you to not expect a response when the first statement you made on this thread was that you have a friend who AIMS to KILL animals that run across his yard. In all seriousness and not looking for drama, but what kind of response would you expect that LONE statement to get? It's pretty hard not to respond to that.

So true. It was in the news within the last year I believe that a crazy neighbor shot and killed a teen for crossing his lawn! There are nuts out there for sure. Scary.

I understand your concern regarding the current situation but I really think you should consider TNR. It may not help immediately but it will keep those new litters from being born every spring. Just think, each of those kittens is another cat that can reproduce and then have their own kittens...
I'm surprised that the authorites wouldn't want to intervene with your neighbor since she is basically turning her backyard into a little cat colony how is this different from people who have too many cats inside their house? I wonder what would happen if you tried calling Newsday or something?

I know! I've asked them to see her but to no avail.
The problem with TNR is that the agencies I've contacted want a $65 "donation" PER CAT and I just don't have the $$ to solve the neighborhood's problem! I REALLY wish I could because I don't think the quality of life is very good for these kitties! I have a cat of my own and I love her very much and I would hate to think of her living in such squalor!

My apologies to the original poster for my comment taking over your post.....kudos to you for being humane..my point was others are not as thoughtful.
Goobster respond away. I think I clarified that in an earlier post--free country. Others responded and I have no issue in how "they" responded but the way you make it sound is like how dare I be his friend. Not just OMG thats horrible. But we are both adults so you are entitled to do what you wish--
He has kids including a 2 year old who got rabies shots because she got bitten by a mongoose I believe. It wasnt a cat. He doesnt go around killing cats or every animal that comes in his yard so I'll clarify that for arguments sake.
But the post invoked images of him for some reason going after the cat if it were threatening as he is protective of his kids.
ETA: Feel frre to FM me so the OP can get some much needed suggestions without us diverting the topic.

This thread has gotten way too serious IMO. Every neighborhood has feral cats or cats that are outdoor pets. For the most part these animals are harmless to humans.

Re: Feral cat hunting in my neighborhood
I agree that TNR is expensive. I live in MD and they also want anywhere from 40-55 dollars per cat.
At one point in my neighborhood- we had 11 cats running around. Being pg twice in that time, its been very hard enjoying my backyard due to the fear of toxoplasmosis (from the cats).
I am an animal lover- but not to the tune of 500 bucks......
