I don't understand politicians who think that ignoring this and letting things get out of control will mke them more popular and electable.

It is not about health and safety of the people, its about money and getting the economy up and running... who cares if a few hundred thousand die? Chat Icon

Yes, economy... it isn't important. Who cares about the people who lost everything, are starving and don't know how they are going to feed themselves & their family. Waiting on lines for food banks for hours that run out of food. Can't get unemployment since March. Government is so dumb to be opening the economy. Chat Icon

I understand all of that, but at what cost? Do you know what it is like for the people who have either had Covid-19 or those who lost family members? I have 2 friends who lost family... young healthy people with NO underlying health problems died. And they died alone, with family on Facetime. So while I understand the need to get money flowing again, reopening too quickly is costing lives.

Yes, I know people who have passed away. and yes I know the horror stories as my friend was an ER nurse in the hot zone of NJ. So I do know what its like, I also know what its to tragically lose loved ones over and over again.

Do you know what its like to be holed up in a 1 bedroom or studio apartment with kids, no money or no food, no space? Theres no backyard or pool to hang out in, kids are crying and struggling. People are crying and starving. They need to work, they need money. It sounds like you dont!

Relax. I am not saying that people should not go back to work, I am saying that they need to take precautions and wear masks, and socially distance themselves. Have you seen what is happening down south? They are not requiring masks, no one is socially distancing, and they are paying the price for it. Now they are talking about reopening schools? WAY too premature. DiSantis is a jacka$$ and is pandering to Trump. He is not listening to science or facts. He is opening with hardly any limitations... everyone go out and take your chances!

Its irresponsible at best.

We can’t really say Florida is having an increase in numbers because ppl are not wearing masks like it’s “required”. If that’s the case, then how would we explain what has been happening in Sweden? Wearing masks is not mandatory there, they suggest ppl to wear them and to social distance but they’re not imposing anything to ppl. I can’t really believe Cuomo when he keeps blaming states like Florida for not doing the “right, smart” thing. Yes, our numbers are low but considering how fluffed up our numbers were, how can we really have a fair comparison??

I truly don't intend to minimize what people are going through. But the cold hard facts show that your likelihood of dying from covid in NYS (assuming you are under the age of 70) even WITH underlying conditions is less than .01%.

FTR I do not agree with how southern states are handling things. Not requiring masks while cases are on the rise is borderline criminal. We are one of the strictest states and it's clearly working. I'm not saying throw caution to the wind, but schools need to reopen for many reasons, the economy being only one of them.

Yes, I know exactly what is happening down south since the beginning.

Cuomo really hasn't done much better. And it's crazy that people really believe these government officials aren't making this political and solely relying on facts and science. The numbers they show us are skewed and far from accurate data or facts.

Ok so then FL numbers are probably worse then they are leading us to believe?

Im talking in general. How deaths were reported, how they label Covid deaths, How someone who was sick from Covid since march wasn't allowed testing until May. So then that persons Positive # got attributed to Easter/passover break. People who tragically are still on ventilators for the past two months. So when they pass away, which, they will, the death number will be added to this round.

How about the unemployment #s NJ was sharing, acting like they fixed the problem and everyone is getting their money. Trying to shut people up since we wanted things to open up. Turns out the # they were reporting as Unemployment paid was actually just the # of claims submitted. So thousands were going homeless and broke while Murphy was reporting these #s and making it seem like things were getting better. New 12 ran a report on it "LAST WEEK" and they changed the metrics on their briefings. So for 3 months, they are showing us skewed data, to fit their narrative. Yet, now the #s they are claiming as funds paid (new metric), also include thousands of people who only got their money the first week.

My whole point is, I am not going to blindly trust a # they put on a TV screen and treat it as the holy grail because Gov. XYZ said it.

ETA: And people are kidding themselves if they think Cuomo / Murphy aren't being political as well.

Probably not. Their numbers are probably a lot more accurate because they are able to test much more than we were. But our death numbers are also highly skewed since basically anyone that died after March (whatever) has Covid on their death certificate.

I agree that the #'s aren't 100% reliable without looking at how the data is being measured and what the #'s mean. What I trust are trends. Other states are definitely trending upward as Hospitalization rates are increasing.

I don't place much stock in death rates because as noted above, they include people who have been on ventilators for 2+ months and were unable to recover. The lower rate is definitely a good sign that recoveries ARE increasing, or that the experimental treatments/drugs being rolled out to current patients are working. This is encouraging news.

However even with NY posting great lower numbers, I still see spikes and increases from day to day. I dont think we have a choice BUT to trust what the gov't is doing right now in focusing on those zip codes with high infection rates and doubling down on controlling that- but what I find troubling is that there is still little information about transmission. I see bars in Long Beach PACKED with people not wearing masks or social distancing. I see clips on my FB feed from my friends in Queens about Astoria bakeries not enforcing social distancing/masks. Are these situations resulting in the spike of infections or are the 110 people who were found to be positive in Queens today (per the Tracker stats just released), only essential workers (transit/health/grocery/retail)??? I see that Nassau County had 32 positive cases yesterday, and now today has 50.

I feel people are sliding with their masks/SD behaviors. We see it now, but it wont show up in the data until 2-3 weeks from now. What we are seeing now are people's great behavior through mid May/Memorial Day. Once we reopen to Phase 3 in Long Island, I think we will hopefully have a clearer picture of whether the rise in the rates of infection are due to (1) relaxed behavior of citizens, (2) reopening of businesses, or both. It is going to be hard to tell - I am still not seeing MSM really go into individual stories about infections like they did in March (ie like the story of a 9 month old infant in England catching Covid on his only trip to the grocery store with his dad; the NYT story that mentioned a food bank delivery driver who always wore gloves/masks at work and still got infected).

The pressure being placed on ALL state Governors to open up businesses is real. Opening has to happen, the burden really is on the people being careful and wearing masks and distancing. Without cooperation, we have nothing. Without a common goal of defeating this virus, regardless of political beliefs, we have nothing. We cant alll point to authoritarian regimes like China and say "they did it better, just copy their lockdown rules" because other Asian countries like Singapore/Taiwan/Hong Kong brought down their infection rates to lower levels without extreme lockdown procedures. Like Cuomo says, we just have to be smart. I just hope FL citizens dont come to NY and bring back the virus !!!!!Chat Icon

Your last sentence is what I have been thinking about. Florida had and still has strict quarantine rules on NYers coming there and Disney is not allowing anyone from the tri-state to come until 2021 I thought I heard? Yet they are now worse off than us- should WE be implementing those kind of rules on Florida residents coming here now? Maybe we should.

And I want to know how bars are even open in this phase? Are they doing it illegally? Because I keep hearing the same thing you said about bars being packed- how are they even operating?

Yes the numbers are going to go up, this is inevitable, but how are their hospitals? That was always the issue with the high increase in positive cases at the same time. The overload on the hospital system. I feel like we are more concerned up here about FL and southern states then they are.

Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....

We have every right to be concerned about FL because many NYers FLED to Florida and other Southern states once the pandemic hit NYC and it was clear things would be much worse here because of our density. Many of those are looking to return.

I dont think many FL residents would WANT to come to NYC, but I worry that we will have a 2nd wave from other state residents coming here simply because of the fact that we are a major city for business and part of reopening means accepting all those incoming tourists/visitors to ensure revenue. It seems we got the worst of this deal - Europeans came to NYC first and infected us. We got better and now FL/TX/South are experiencing peak infection rates- then in 2-3 months, it comes back to us because of those people. It stinks!

Isn't this when snow birds usually come back north?

Now with the risk so much lower in NY, I wouldn't be surprised if some do come back up here.

I think under normal circumstances yes, but people do not want to come back up here even with their numbers increasing. My family is making plans to go visit everyone down south, no one is trying to come here.

Also we have a lot of snowbirds in my building and the majority aren’t coming back. I know this, because when they decided to shut down the pool indefinitely this year; the elder tenants were complaining and used that as reason why they should open it. There is no reason for them to come back if they can’t do anything, especially in their own building where they live.

Makes sense. I was wondering if it might change with NY opening up, but I see what you mean about lingering restrictions especially compared with FL.

Also with no vaccine and much information on how to better treat, the numbers here will go up. That’s inevitable.

People rather stay down south where you are spread out and not on top of each other, like we are in the Tri-state area.

Someone said it. The whole country will be affected by what some of the permissive southern states are doing. One way or another, the spikes and spreads will reach everywhere.

Consistent leadership during a pandemic would save so many lives and get things back to normal so much sooner.

Re: Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....

I highly doubt Floridians will be flocking to NY this summer Chat Icon our summertime amenities are much better than those up north. I think some people from down south who head north do so to visit family and this year many won't be doing that bc of risks with air-travel and the fact that so much is still closed up there.

DeSantis is an idiot so I hope for everyone's sake that Cuomo doesn't follow his lead. Schools in FL are expected to open in August as scheduled. Whether there will be a change in what the school day looks like here in FL is still to be determined and it will not be the same for all of the districts in the state. My zip code, with a population of about 14,000, has 42 positive cases. We had no new cases for about 28 days but have had an increase of 3 cases within the last 3 days. Who knows what will happen in the next several weeks but cases are definitely increasing and I don't think it is bc of increased testing Chat Icon FL districts are finalizing plans over the next 2 weeks. As of now we will return to school as usual.

Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....

Cuomo will not base anything on Florida does and thank goodness for that. I 100% believe schools will open in the Fall. They may look a little different (I don't think they are going to allow assemblies and the cafeteria may be questionable) but they will be in school.

Are positive antibody tests added in the positive number they report everyday?

I'm surprised parents are not protesting for schools to reopen.! The children are suffering. I would gladly shut down the streets and march for this cause. Why aren't we as parents doing more??? There was NO live learning in my district. Unacceptable. What the hell were we paying the teachers for??? To post BS assignments and a google meet once a week. Pitiful.

I'm in for a (peaceful) protest and see our taxes be put to education. Who's with me?

There have been but unfortunately due to everything going on they get zero coverage. The new thing I heard was if distance learning happens in September a lot of parents are “dis enrolling” (not sure of the term) their children from the district and doing real homeschooling. The hope there is that if enough parents do it than teachers unions will get involved because tons of teachers will be laid off if half of each grade is no longer in the schools. Teachers unions are powerful and could maybe get parents heard.

The problem with that is most parents have to work full time and can't be solely responsible for their child's education.
I do get what you are saying about how that could be helpful due to the teacher's union, but unfortunately it's not feasible for so many.
This whole thing is a disaster and our children are the one's suffering from it.

They mentioned hiring a ‘tutor’ such as a former teacher or someone in college for teaching twice a week. Which honestly I was thinking of doing with distance learning anyways because my kids learned nothing. But speaking with parents who do REAL homeschooling there are programs online that kids can do independently. If they are home anyways it’s something to consider.

Childcare is also an issue though too. Many parents both work outside the home.
So pay for full time childcare, pay for a tutor, all while paying exorbitant school taxes which will surely go up next year for a school you aren't using.
Perhaps the govt can continue to print more money and just keep giving stimulus checks.
