I'm surprised parents are not protesting for schools to reopen.! The children are suffering. I would gladly shut down the streets and march for this cause. Why aren't we as parents doing more??? There was NO live learning in my district. Unacceptable. What the hell were we paying the teachers for??? To post BS assignments and a google meet once a week. Pitiful.
I'm in for a (peaceful) protest and see our taxes be put to education. Who's with me?
Trust me I am outraged and it’s disgusting that these kids are being forgotten. I’ve been pissed since seeing education was phase 4 and even more pissed that they aren’t even focusing on a plan or have a real one yet. I gave these f#ckers 3 months that has been mentally and educationally draining on me and my child. How much more time do they want? Just open the damn schools and be done.
The Florida Governor may be an idiot but Atleast he is thinking about school and knows how important it is to send kids back. Kids arent being effected and its very low. I’m disgusted by the whole thing.
Gov. Murphy isn’t sounding so intelligent over here anyway, so I have no time to focus on the moron governors in other states when I have my own.

Rhode Island is also planning on going back full time in the fall... They are working on their plans/scenarios now. The Governor realizes that this distance learning was not great for anyone... Maybe since she has 2 kids which I am assuming are school-aged.

Re: Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....
Scientists predict that the fall/winter "sept-jan" is going to be the worst months for covid and that the number one way it spreads is indoors, with close contact and lack of air flow (hello, schools). If this is the case, schools will be a breeding ground come fall/winter.

But, at least have plans. My kids Catholic school has three distinct plans. Fully remote, hybrid, and fully in school. The way this round of remote learning was handled was terrible. There will need to be A LOT more live teaching sessions, and less "busy work". Even that won't be as good as real school, but at least it's something. It can't be done the same way it has been. Come up with real plans for hybrid, as well as real plans for fully in school. Figure out social distancing, buses, cafeteria, etc. This morning, Cuomo was asked about schools in September. He simply said he doesn't know. Gee, thanks. DiBlasio is no better- all he keeps saying is he wants kids back in buildings but has zero answers on how that can happen. We are almost in July. FIGURE IT OUT.

Cuomo doesn't know. What a great leader. All he cares about is speaking every day about how great he is and how smart and how he got our numbers down. He is so full of himself it's disgraceful

This isn't breaking news. You don't need to be a scientists to know that a virus, which, is still around will come back harder during the fall and winter. How much are we paying them to tell us the obvious?
Yes and so will the common cold, Flu and Strep etc, so any logical person can deduce that Covid will rear its ugly head harder as well.

I’m not defending Cuomo but the plan that your school has is basically meaningless. Saying either we will be in school, or we won’t be in school, or we’ll do both. Yeah no sh*t. What other options are there???
I’m assuming plans are being made but at this point they just aren’t making them public, because no matter what you say 50% of the population will be up in arms. It just isn’t worth it.
My DH definitely has to go to work outside the home. He has no option. Right now I am using the summer to figure out what my plans are for September. I’m currently trying to work with my job to see if I can stay remote through at least January. If they don’t approve it, then I have to find a sitter for my children as a backup plan. I’m looking for a sitter now, so I’m not scrambling come September 1st with everyone else.

People have already come to the school, measured, and we know exactly how many children we can safely fit in a classroom. The cafeteria tables have been rearranged to see what a socially distanced lunch time would look like, and if it is feasible. Teachers will be participating in remote learning training over the summer, to make it better if we have to do it again. Hallways have been outlined with tape to make them one way. Teachers are being asked if anyone would be willing to work remotely for the parents who are not comfortable sending their children back. There are ways to make plans. But to just say "I don't know" is ridiculous.

Re: Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....
I think any prudent leader in these times would be hoping for the best and planning for the worst. We can't have hospitals overrun with lives being lost unnecessarily.
If luck, science, or human behavior makes it so this is not the case by fall, then great. Luck and human behavior rarely come through in times like these, though. Restrictions and funding science like we had and did back in March would seem to be the most likely hopes IF things are spiralling out of control when back to school and colder weather hit.
Special services, education delivery, medical care, etc. should be improved as well. Leaders should be thinking about how to deliver and improve these things if we are locked down again because of people's selfish and reckless behavior.
I am hoping against hope that people start acting in society's best interest (so many studies about how distancing and mask wearing can keep things under better control), or even a stroke of luck wil contain this. But I am really watching the scientists for treatments and vaccines that may save us anyway. Short of those things, there are terrible times ahead no matter what we want to happen.

Our school has the same basic plans - in person, hybrid or remote.
They have some committees formed and they are going to be researching. It's hard to commit to something when there is so much uncertainty...

I’m sure most school districts are doing something similar. But that is one school with one student population.
Whatever works for Buffalo, will probably not work for NYC/LI. And could you imagine the backlash if it was announced today that upstate would be returning to school in September but not the metro area?!?! People would go absolutely apeshit.

This. There is absolutely no way to responsibly announce a definitive plan when such important things and numvers can and do change so quickly. Schools should be ready for hybrid, remote, or in person--depending on what the situation dictates is optimal. It sounds like that's what most are doing--which is great.

Do you think Cuomo already knows he will allow upstate to go back but not NYC/LI? People would rightfully lose their minds. The disparity in education quality would be glaring. NYC students would suffer irreversible academic loss.

This will already be the case on a state by state basis. If Florida goes back full time then we are at a big disadvantage to Florida! The place that "we" all say has such bad schools. Their kids will end up getting a better education that what we are paying for on LI. Just some food for thought....

This is a very good point. I can't imagine this will go well if most of the country goes back, even part time, and we don't. I also do not think schools are a given in phase 4. I think Cuomo can say schools aren't ready even for regions that are in Phase 4. Because all of NY should be in Phase 4 by September.

My friends in Florida are getting a way better education than my daughter is- even before all this mess. Certain areas in Florida have way better schools than certain districts in NY

If school districts are indeed preparing for hybrid, remote, and in person scenarios, why aren’t they communicating that to Cuomo so he doesn’t look like an ass for saying “I don’t know”. That’s the last thing ppl want to hear from a leader. If he doesn’t know then what is he doing about it? We’re certainly not in the same situation we were in March, so what’s the hold up?!? My kids are not in public/private schools but if they were, I’d be totally enraged, even more if they needed special services.

Definitely!
After speaking to my principal this morning I don't have a good feeling - she didn't say anything specific and maybe they are just preparing for the worst case scenario and hoping for the best.
The thing that worries me is if we don't go - when will we go? Will kids be out the whole year? Or until their is a proven vaccine - which may be the whole year?

I am sure Cuomo knows what they are planning for - he just isn't committing yet. I'm definitely not a fan but, I think this is smart since if he had to decide today, I can see him picking remote learning. And who knows what things will look like in September...

Re: Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....
You know the whole thing is, I don't think that this was spreading like wildfire in schools. If that was the case the whole country would have gotten it just as bad as NY. We got it bad because of mass transit and packed office buildings etc. I honestly don't think we would see a big spike if schools reopened completely normally in September.

I agree. Kids were in school, with no precautions whatsoever, when this thing was really starting to spread. You didn't hear much about massive amounts of kids with it. Maybe what some of the studies have said are right- maybe kids don't really get it and don't really spread it. If you look at the numbers of people who test positive- it's very rarely kids

Also because JFK is the freaking hub for international travel.
Idk I just feel like they aren’t putting as much planning behind the scenes or discussions as we think they are for education. I think it’s pretty freaking sad.

Like I mentioned before my cousin has it for 2 months, was in the apartment with her two kids, a small apartment. She still tested positive after two months, kids negative.

True but then at least say something like...we’re exploring and working on different scenarios so we can be prepared for whatever situation we’ll be come September...or something, anything but don’t just say “I don’t know” cause that’s just showing how little priority he’s giving to education and as a parent I’d much rather hear him say “we’re working on something” than “I don’t know”.
