Re: Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....

You know the whole thing is, I don't think that this was spreading like wildfire in schools. If that was the case the whole country would have gotten it just as bad as NY. We got it bad because of mass transit and packed office buildings etc. I honestly don't think we would see a big spike if schools reopened completely normally in September.
Not to mention September will be a completely different situation than March. In March the entire state closed down, a majority of parents were either laid off or were working remotely. Now we are reopening and many parents (myself included) do not have the same flexibility. So we are all going to have to send our kids to before and after care type programs. And if that's the case, keeping schools closed is preventing nothing, because those kids will still all be together and then coming home to their parents.
So whatever spike we're going to see in September is going to most likely happen with or without schools open.

If school districts are indeed preparing for hybrid, remote, and in person scenarios, why aren’t they communicating that to Cuomo so he doesn’t look like an ass for saying “I don’t know”. That’s the last thing ppl want to hear from a leader. If he doesn’t know then what is he doing about it? We’re certainly not in the same situation we were in March, so what’s the hold up?!? My kids are not in public/private schools but if they were, I’d be totally enraged, even more if they needed special services.
I am sure Cuomo knows what they are planning for - he just isn't committing yet. I'm definitely not a fan but, I think this is smart since if he had to decide today, I can see him picking remote learning. And who knows what things will look like in September...
True but then at least say something like...we’re exploring and working on different scenarios so we can be prepared for whatever situation we’ll be come September...or something, anything but don’t just say “I don’t know” cause that’s just showing how little priority he’s giving to education and as a parent I’d much rather hear him say “we’re working on something” than “I don’t know”.
Can you imagine you are at your job and you are tasked with something very challenge and super important and your boss or the executive team comes to you and says - ok so where are you at with ideas and plans for XYZ project- and you say- yeah I don't know? These politicians all fuking suck. And they seem to be in office for life. No accountability and they know it.

Yep. Perhaps we should send some teachers to the daycares/SCOPE programs where the kids will all be congregated as their parents work- so they can teach them there. There's a solution.

Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....
If there is the remote learning bs come the fall there are gonna be issues. DH can’t work from home ( he’s in auto body) and I have a job where I can work from home — for now. WORK being the key word. Not teach my kid. I told my DH and my parents that if this continues in the fall, whoever her teacher is, the superintendent and principal will be getting an email from me stating that I am not adhearing to deadlines with school work. It will get done when it gets done- if it gets submitted at 10pm on a Saturday so be it. I’m not in their payroll. Schools better open in the fall!!!

Florida’s DeSantis wants schools open in August....
Cuomo is requiring each district to develop a plan for September by the middle of July. My district has put together a team that will meet (virtually) daily until a plan is developed. The team includes all stakeholders: parents, teachers, students, admin, CSEA, etc. These plans will then be approved or rejected by NYS. Districts will then need to modify plans if they did not receive approval.

I would like to see what will be done to make sure that people are deterred from sending their kids to school sick and that quarantined families are accomodated properly.
Even if numbers and curves looked favorable, it just takes a few dishonest people to send kids to school sick, and whole classes or buildings could be shut down.
I wonder if teacher sick days will be expanded.

This has been the reality for myself and most other families I know. Our work increased during the pandemic. We could not homeschool. We couldn't do anything but work and plop our kids in front of a screen.
I don't know anyone who was cut slack because they were working from home. Business as usual. It floors me that so many people don't understand that.

This.
Schools are going to open. At least in September. The issues that are going to arise are how to social distance in school, the gym, the cafeteria, after school clubs, sports. Things like that. The districts also need to come up with a more robust distance learning plan because if the numbers spike again in the fall/winter, they will shut down schools.

Personally, I would rather hear Cuomo say I don't know, then rattle off some total BS and change it next week. He is not an educator. He actually doesn't know what would be best for schools come the fall. He gave all the schools until July 15 (I think, maybe 31), to submit their plans for the fall to the state for review. Our school district sent a message out that they are working on a plan for the fall following the state guidelines and will submit it, and let the parents know when/if the plan is approved.
What our district did for the last three months was not virtual teaching. It was uploading worksheets to an online platform for completion. If that is the school's plan for the fall, I will re-enroll my child in the private school she attended from pre-k to 5 because they at least had the kids logged into live instruction every day for the last three months. If not that, then DH said he will home school her. But the BS that went on for the last 3 months is, IMHO, not an acceptable plan.
