For those of you who read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child", did you ever CIO?
I've gotten the impression that this author is not for going in after a few minutes. If you're going to do it, stick to your guns and don't go in. I don't know, this is a bit harsh for me. My DS is almost 5.5 months and a few days ago I was going to try this and he cried for 30 minutes, and we finally went in and comforted him. He'd start to fall asleep but his little sobs would wake him up But I'm at my wits end. We have NO schedule in place and he sleeps maybe a total of 90 minutes during the day. Help, please!!!

Re: For those of you who read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child", did you ever CIO?
I started reading the book and then decided screw it i cant wait to finish this book, i need sleep. so we let DS cio. he was 10 months when we did it cause i was too scared of the entire process before that but was at my wits end at that point.
the first night, he cried 10 mins. the 2nd night didnt cry at all. the 3rd night cried 3 mins. hes now 23 months and goes into the crib fully awake, puts himself to sleep, and sleeps 12 hours a night.
i was never a cio advocate until i tried it and it worked. sleep will always inevitably prevail. the more sleep they get, the happier and more well behaved they are. it was the best decision we made for our family and i plan on doing it again with our next and def before 10 months!

This book was my bible, it really works. I let DD CIO, it was hard but necessary. She is an amazing sleeper now at 16 months, she actually goes to the stairs when she wants to go to bed!

I have to preface this by saying I did not read the entire book but I am of the mind that going in after a few min is actually crueler than not going in at all.
All that said, IMHO 5.5 mos is too young to do it. It sucks - I know, trust me - but if your 5.5mo is still waking, it's probably for a reason. 6 mos is the absolute earliest I would CIO - and I am a hard arse

THat book worked wonders. I started when DS was about 5 months old. I did CIO and yes it was hard, but works. I have to say that if DS was crying more then 30 minutes I went in, especially when he was really young. After a while, he kind of figured it out and would cry for a second and then just go to sleep. He has been a great sleeper ever since. I was pretty strict with bedtimes and nap times. I think you have to be, to make it work. Once DS turned 2, I'm not as strict. I still stick to a schedule when where home. I tell everyone to read that!

For both kids I was/am a baby wise mom. I started to get into a rhythm/schedule around 6 weeks. By about 14 weeks, they were on a loose sched. and by 5mths they were scheduled. - 3 naps, 12h bedtime.
I did modified CIO. When I decided to "sleep train", I remember getting a long good book from the library, sitting in the rocking chair while trying to get little one to sleep. I never picked them up, but would rub their back, etc. every 3min, next day 5min, next 10min, etc. It was about 1 week by the time they could ge themselves to sleep.
My kids are great sleepers. At 3 and 1 still sleep 8:30-8:30 and take 2-3h naps. I think it is personality and partly from being scheduled.

I tried other methods before not going in. It just never worked for my DD. The more i went in, the more agitated she got. I eventually just did it cold turkey and it worked! Shes a great sleeper now. However, you do need to make sure they are tired when its time for nap. A schedule sort of really helped with this.... we used to put her down every 1.5-2 hours, like clockwork before even trying CIO. When its time to CIO, internally i feel they know its sleep time so hopefully limits the amount of crying (.i.e. they know what they should be doing as opposed to just being put down somewhere alone, unaware of what to do). Also, have you started a naptime routine? I had one from the time we brought her home and I found this really helped when it was time to CIO (same idea - they know whats coming). It took me one day of CIO to get my DD to sleep well. My DD cried once for 20 minutes at bedtime but never more than 5-10 minutes any other time that day.

HSHHC has 2 CIO methods. Total extinction (not going in) and gradual (where you go in, sort of like Ferber).
I loved that book, and it helped me immensely. There is no need to read the whole book, it's divided into age groups, so I skip ahead or back depending on what I need.
Now I need to dig that sucker out because I need to get DS STTN (he's my last and has me wrapped around his little finger).
