so i am trying to read healthy sleep habits, happy baby....
in my spare time , and i am overwhelmed. shocker.
i am really trying to pay attention to sasha today and get her in the crib before she gets cranky. still only sleeping for 30 to 40 mins-- although the phone always f*cking rings around the 30 min mark.
i gotta get both the naps and the nighttime waking sorted out.
why aren't there cliff's notes out there? i need them! i just want someone to tell me what to do.

I skimmed it and did not read the whole book cover to cover. It is dense, and there is almost too much info.
It was very helpful to me though all the same, so just flip to the parts that apply to you.

The basic concept is this- sleep begets sleep. Most new moms (myself included) can miss tired signals and by the time we try to nap them it's too late. They are overtired and overstimulated and therefore can not get into a good sleep. Babies should be napping about 3 times a day and should not be awake for more than 2 hours or so at a time. And early bedtimes truely do lead to longer night time sleep.

I just ordered this and I'm hoping I'll be able to read through it as well.
I just can't figure out how to get DD to sleep when she is obviously showing signs of being tired, and she definitely can stay awake for longer than 2 hours! Today, I tried to put her down 5 times in her bassinet, I finally gave up and put her in her swing, and she's passed out now.

The idea of the book, is that yes of course they "can" be awake for more then 3 hours, but "should" they. I followed the book (for the most part) and stuck to a strict schedule for a little while. It made all the difference in the world. DS still didn't take 3 hour naps or anything, but getting him down for them was much easier and he very clearly became a happier baby.

I'm definitely going to try and create some sort of sleep routine. How successful I will be I have no idea, but it's just hard to get her to stay asleep. She falls asleep in my arms but the minute I put her down she wakes up.

I'm not sure, but I think maybe Sasha is similar in age to my DS (he's almost 4 1/2 months). We should figure something out! We're doing okay at night, except that I think he should be going to sleep earlier than he is. Naps seem to be at his will. This week, he's taking 2+ hour naps. Last week, hardly any. I used to think it was crazy when a friend would turn off the phones, not flush, etc. when her baby was napping, but I can see why now.

Re: so i am trying to read healthy sleep habits, happy baby....
I'd like to recommend:
The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems, by Tracy Hogg. I followed her routine and it has worked out wonderfully! Easy read too.
DD takes 3, 1 1/2 naps a day, & one catnap (40 minutes) around 5:30.
Goes to bed after bottle at 7:30, has a "dream feed" at 10:30....sleeps until 5:30am.
She's 2 1/2 months now but we started at seven weeks...and she took right to it right away. Clearly, she's much happier! She likes a routine (and SO DO I!)
Good luck!

Re: so i am trying to read healthy sleep habits, happy baby....
i totally need help in this dept. my 5 month old used to be a great sleeper. we would put her down around 8:30/9 and she would sleep through the night. now she wakes up at 12:30 and her daytime naps? please! they are 30 minutes long. she sleeps well in your arms but as soon as you put her down she wakes up.
looking back i wish i would have worked on her sleep routine back around 3 months. i feel like she was more moldable then. now she is very aware and it is hard to break her habits.

this is pretty much Sasha. She used to STTN, which is why I never tried anything earlier.
She always cat napped and I looked at it as, well if she is sleeping through the night, I'll deal. Well, no longer.
We do put her down for bed at 6 45ish. So, she goes down early-- but, it's better when she wakes. It's really managing the naptime schedule-- so, her nighttime sleeping is better. She is waking up more and more at night-- I can't take it!

Same here. DS is almost 5 months and used to be a decent sleeper (wakes 1-2 times to eat and fall right back to sleep). We've gotten into a pretty good nap routine but now he's been waking up at night and staying up for about 2 hours I try to let him cry for a little bit but he ends up mostly just babbling to himself. I'm at a loss also.
I also just read the chapter that applied to DS's age so it was definitely quicker and easier to read.
When your DD wakes after 30-40 minutes have you tried going in immediately and seeing if you can soothe her back to sleep?

Re: so i am trying to read healthy sleep habits, happy baby....
I am tryin to get through the Healthy Sleep Habits book too...and would appreciate cliffnotes, too!
DD is 15 weeks old, so she's younger than Sasha. She takes about 3-4 naps per day, about 1 hour each. I guess I am lucky in that respect, but I bought the book for the nighttime issues...she goes down around 7-8 and wakes up to eat around 3...fine...but now she is waking up at 12-1 for an additional feeding, just like a few PP mentioned on this thread....
My ped. told me today that if the feeding is less than 6-7 hours after they went to sleep, I should feed her no more than 10 min (I'm BF) and put her right down - no diaper change, no burping...and by the time she is 4 months, I should let her cry if she wakes up earlier than the 6-7 hour stretch. Not looking forward to that...

Re: so i am trying to read healthy sleep habits, happy baby....
haha I know, the beginning was so long. Skip to the section for her age group. From what I remember for her age, aim for a nap 1 hour after she wakes in the morning. Then during the day every 2 hours she is awake work on getting her to go down for a nap before she reaches the 2 hour mark and gets over tired. Also the book talks about trying an earlier bed time at night. Good luck, the book worked great for us!

Re: so i am trying to read healthy sleep habits, happy baby....
It seems a lot of people delat with the 4-5 month night wakings. Mine are still night waking at 6.5 months However-they nap and gop to sleep pretty well for the most part. I think she is old enough to fusas for a bit when you lay her down. I was running in to my kids as soon as they cried, they would see me and get all wound up. For Ronan-he fusses for maybe 2 minutes and then he is out. If he does longer I know he is either hungry or not feeling well.
Declan needs about 20 minutes to fall asleep

i think i have the concept down-- i guess my real questions are, how long do you let them cry for?
i think we need to start cio tonight. i was waiting for the weekend, but i am hoping that by monday we can resolve the night wakings-- then on to daytime. it's thursday right? i swear-- i don;t know what day it is!
