For those who closed and moved into a house...

Did you change your locks...ie get them rekeyed by a locksmith, or did you go out to Lowes or Home Depot and buy new locks for the house?

The locksmith nearby wants to charge us $11.95 per lock, so for a dead bolt, the bottom lock and the garage door to the house lock, we're looking at over $30.

Wouldn't it be cheaper for us to buy new locks, etc at the home store?

I would really love your opinions on this matter!

That sounds very reasonable. We changed the front door lock (it is a dead bolt and regular lock) and it wasnt an expensive brand and it was $25.

Re: For those who closed and moved into a house...

What would you recommend more? The locksmith or the home store like Lowes?

ETA: FIL thinks it's going to be too hard to unscrew the doorknobs/dead bolt and install a new one.....what was your take on replacing them by hand?

I tihnk it just depends on you guys... do you feel like changing them yourself, or paying someone else to do it?

They are easy to change yourself... a couple of screws... the end result either way is the same...

Thank you Cortney.....so you two didn't need to drill and make any holes any wider when you did it yourself? And the keys came with it?

nope not at all... try and look at the brand of the lock and see if they have the same brand at the store...

for the keys, you can even get multiple doorknobs that open with the same key... there is a special number on the package to tell you which doorknobs match up with the same keys... if you cant find any they will even "re-key" it for you there for free!

We changed the locks. I could not sleep at night thinking someone else had the keys.

You can do it yourself if you are handy (or not!). Most locks fits the same hole in the door. Especially if you buy the same brand.

We changed EVERY lock possible. I think we went to Home Depot and bought new locks and DH installed them himself. I don't think it was too difficult.

We bought needs locks but they gave us all their keys when we closed so I wasnt too concerned. We did it like a month after we moved in because I hated the door knob they had. lol.

My friend just bought a house in Nov and her dad changed the locks for them. She said he did it pretty easily.

We haven't changed them yet....we will probably do it when we have our contractor come in to do some renovations.....probably within a month or two, we moved in 12/30.

Re: For those who closed and moved into a house...

I didn't realize how easy it is to change locks, so we called a locksmith and paid a lot of $$$$$. Oh well, lesson learned!

We went to Home Depot last night an bought a set of 2 new door locks and a deadbolt lock. Cost ~$30, and we're going to install them today after we get done with the closing.

Re: For those who closed and moved into a house...

$12/lock doesn't seem so bad. If it's a good quality lock, you might think about keeping it. Ours had a brass, so I wanted to change it and the front door alone was $140 for the lock (Schalge).

Re: For those who closed and moved into a house...

We went to Lowes and DH changed all the locks himself... I have to say though we did price around with locksmiths and we got nothing near the price you did... that is a pretty good price... We got quoted at over 100 for three locks in our house.. there was no way we were going to pay that.

Its very easy to change the locks yourself. We bought new locks at Lowes and my DH installed them in less than an hour!
