Re: Free formula not being given in some city hospitals?
I saw this too - but they said you can request the formula. (Sorry if someone already said this - I didn't go thru the entire post)

They were just talking about this on The View! Shockingly, I agreed with Elisabeth, who thought it was ridiculous as well.

But did you notice that no one really agreed with Elisabeth? I was a little surprised by that. Especially when Joy said something along the lines of what's the big deal, just go to the store and buy it. I think she was missing the point.

I agree! This is horrible. I am all for BF but couldn't bring myself to do it. I envy the moms that can do it and think it would have been wonderful, but it just didn't work out. Why should people like me suffer b/c they want to promote BF? It is the best but for the ones it doesnt work our for why "punish" them???

I was a little surprised by Joy's reaction! But then Barbara told her "you're missing the point - it's not the government's responsibility to make that decsision." And then I think Joy understood the point.
This is all hitting too close to home because I wanted to breastfeed...but my milk never came in .

Re: Free formula not being given in some city hospitals?
I gave birth at a city hospital (Columbia Presby) and I was suprised to see this thread after my experience.
They were pushing heavily the formula. I wanted to breast feed and when they brought me DD at 1am for the first time they said here she is feed her - I asked if they could help me the first time - they told me no the LC would be tomorrow morning - I could figure it out myself of give her a bottle which would be so much easier. They kept offering me bottles the entire time I was at the hospital.
When I left they gave me a diaper bag and bottles of formula "in case I change my mind" they even offered more to me than what was in the bag.
While I BF I am all in favor of happy mother = happy baby and think that it should be each individuals choice as to what they feel is best for them and their child.

Re: Free formula not being given in some city hospitals?
They are just ending the practice of giving away free samples when you leave. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. You can still get free samples from the companies. I've never had any interest in formula feeding, but I was sent 2 large cans of formula by some company before my son was born. The "free" formula is really just a form of marketing for the formula companies.
I do have to say that I do use the free diaper bag as my son's daycare bag -- it's perfect for that.

.
I think this is why they are banning the free bags when you leave. It sabatoges breastfeeding relationships.
I had difficulty breastfeeding my first DC, and it was very tempting to switch over when I had a hard time. I think this happens to many mothers.
I don't see how taking away the free samples takes away your right to choose what to feed your child.

I hope this doesnt happen in Long Island. They are banning free formula in some hospitals so women will breast feed instead.
I think that is so wrong.
I never produced milk. I am completely incapable of breast feeding - why would they deny my child food at such a hospital???? I dont get it - and its not fair....
I am sure I'm not the only mom not capable of breast feeding my child.... It is supposedly coming to LI too. If you ask the nursery for formula though I think they will give it. They are eliminating the "freebie bags" that the formula companies give out in the hospital.
I also did not produce milk in the beginning & that kit was a life saver, but if I was not producing milk by the time I went home I would have asked for some formula. Also, you can still get the freebies from the Pediatrician at the 1 week visit.
Not that I agree with what NYC is doing, but at least there are still options if you know to ask for them.......

And isn't it ironic that they are pushing for BFing, but heaven forbid you are a BFing mom who is out to lunch, at the park, at work.....
They need to make the city more comfortable for BFing moms first IMO, before getting all up in it.....

Those aren't the city hospitals they are referring to, they are talking about the Health and Hospital Corp hospitals. Like Coney Island Hospital, Metropolitan Hospital, etc, etc.

Re: Free formula not being given in some city hospitals?
As many have already said - they are not taking away the formula while in the hospital. Just the diaper bag with formula in it when you leave. I dont see how thats so unfair. I didnt get a diaper bag with a free pump in it. Or breast pads. Or anything free that i can use while BF'ing. Except the ugly diaper bag

I think they should have a bag of breastfeeding stuff too for those that are breastfeeding!

Columbia Presbyterian is in NYC but is NOT a city hospital. It is a private hospital. By city hospital they mean those owned and run by the City of New York (e.g., Bellevue, Harlem Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital). Moms will still get free formula at private hospitals in NYC.
